Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS Released with New COSMIC Desktop

Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS is available for download, the first version of the Ubuntu-based Linux distribution to use System76’s all-new Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. It’s been a “long ride” to get here (building an entirely new Linux desktop, compositor, widget toolkit, and suite of first-party apps is no mean feat). System76 announced plans to build COSMIC in 2021, and a series of alpha and beta builds followed. Now, it’s out in orbit, joining the constellation of Linux distros (cheesy, eh). Pop!_OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring a custom GNOME desktop. Pop!_OS is designed to have a minimal amount of clutter on the desktop without distractions in order to allow the user to focus on work. The distribution is developed by Linux computer retailer System76.

pearOS is an Arch-based desktop Linux distribution which features a macOS-like theme and icons on top of the KDE Plasma desktop. Some of the distribution's features include a custom system installer called pearOS Installer, a pearOS welcome application, and the GNOME Files file manager. pearOS comes with various popular desktop, web and multimedia applications, such as the Gwenview image viewer, Firefox web browser, Elisa music player and Kate text editor.

Back in October System76 announced a planned release date for Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS and the COSMIC Desktop... And they've made it! The new Pop!_OS 24.04 is now available for download as the long-awaited update atop an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base while using their Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment...

MZLA Technologies Corporation has released Thunderbird 146, the latest monthly update for its famed open-source email client. Changes this month may sound less flashy compared to last month, which saw Thunderbird 145 add Microsoft Exchange support (albeit with some caveats, carveouts and a couple of capabilities still be added). With the NVIDIA 590 Linux driver series removing GeForce 900 series "Maxwell" and GeForce 10 series "Pascal" as part of punting it off to the latest legacy driver branch, it's time for a last look at how the mainline NVIDIA Linux driver is performing with these aging graphics cards relative to the current state of the upstream open-source NVIDIA Linux drivers. In this article is a look at how the open-source and upstream Nouveau kernel driver with Nouveau/NVK Mesa drivers are performing relative to the NVIDIA 580 series with its Maxwell and Pascal support. SmartOS is an open-source UNIX-like operating system based on illumos, a community fork of OpenSolaris. It features four technologies - ZFS (a combined file system and logical volume manager), DTrace (a dynamic tracing framework for troubleshooting kernel and application problems), Zones (a lightweight virtualisation solution), KVM and bhyve (two full virtualisation solutions for running a variety of guest operating systems, including Linux, Windows, BSD and Plan9). SmartOS is designed to be particularly suitable for building clouds and generating appliances.
