Growing a ‘word forest’: the Kenyan teacher trying to save her language from extinction

1 octobre 2024 à 06:00

The Yaaku people long ago assimilated with the majority Maasai, and few still speak Yaakunte, but there is a new determination to save their culture – and their forest – before it disappears

  • Words and photographs by Gioia Shah in Kori Kori

In a community centre made of glass bottles, Juliana Loshiro stands before her pupils, a group of village elders. Sitting in a semi-circle, they listen and repeat simple words and greetings in Yaakunte (also called Yaaku), the language of their tribe.

Though it might seem strange that even older people cannot speak the language, one of the pupils stands up and explains why he is in the class: his grandparents died before they could teach him Yaakunte, he says, and his mother, a Maasai, did not know the language. “So we got lost.”

Will Hezbollah survive Israel’s onslaught? – podcast

Hezbollah was a force to be reckoned with. Now its veteran leader and a host of its senior leaders are dead and Israel is threatening a ground invasion of Lebanon. Is this the start of a new reality in the Middle East? Jason Burke reports

It has been a startling – and deadly – few weeks in the Middle East. First came Israel’s detonation of Hezbollah pagers and walkie-talkies. Then it intensified airstrikes that have killed hundreds of civilians in Lebanon and led to thousands fleeing their homes. Then, on Friday, came the most shocking news: that Hassan Nasrallah, who had led Hezbollah for more than three decades, had been assassinated by Israel in a bunker below Beirut.

Since then, as the civilian death toll rises, a succession of the group’s leaders have met the same fate as Nasrallah. Jason Burke, the Guardian’s international security correspondent, explains why events have escalated so quickly. He tells Michael Safi how badly the assassinations have damaged Hezbollah, and whether the militant group can recover. And he explains how Iran is likely to react to these humiliating attacks on its proxy.

John Oliver on Trump: ‘He’s reshaped the judiciary from top to bottom’

30 septembre 2024 à 17:41

The Last Week Tonight host looks into how Trump’s presidency shifted the US judiciary far rightward – and what could happen if he’s elected again

On the latest Last Week Tonight, John Oliver looked into how hard-right conservatives, aided by Donald Trump, have reshaped the US judiciary, from district courts to the supreme court.

“Extremity seems to be the standard now for this court,” said Oliver of the current supreme court, “which has been aggressive in applying hardline conservative views to reverse established law,” from overturning Roe v Wade, to reversing 45 years of precedent on affirmative action, to discarding the Chevron doctrine this June.

Activists say they have proof ministers tried to influence police over Israeli arms firm protests

Palestine Action says papers show ministers attempted to sway police and prosecutors to crack down on protesters

Internal government documents show that Home Office ministers and staff tried to influence police and prosecutors to crack down on activists targeting the UK factories of an Israeli arms manufacturer, campaigners have claimed.

Briefing notes, obtained through freedom of information (FoI) requests by Palestine Action, show details of government meetings, predating the 7 October Hamas attacks and Israel’s response in Gaza, intended to “reassure” Elbit Systems UK, an Israeli arms manufacturer, which is subject to a direct action campaign by the campaign group.
