Mackerel stocks near breaking point because of overfishing, say experts

Northeast Atlantic mackerel populations depleted, and Good Fish Guide says shoppers should look for other options

Mackerel stocks are nearing a “breaking point”, experts have said as the fish is downgraded as a sustainable option.

People should be eating herring instead, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said, because mackerel continues to be overfished by countries including Norway and the UK.

‘I’m still sick. I’m still disabled. But I’m proud of my body’: Frances Ryan’s manifesto for disabled women

9 avril 2025 à 06:00

Women with disabilities are the biggest minority group in the world, but are still shut out of society. In an extract from her new book, the writer reveals how that is changing – and what more needs to be done

I would like to be able to start this story with a stellar anecdote about how exactly my life imploded. “I was walking down Sunset Boulevard and Harry Styles ran me down in a Ferrari.” “I was dancing on a podium in Ibiza when a falling speaker semi- decapitated me.” In reality, it was much more mundane, as these things inevitably tend to be. I went to the pub and I caught the flu. That was it.

I spent Christmas 2017 with what I thought was a regular illness. By February, I was unable to breathe or move. Flu had become flu complications and I was strapped to a ventilator mask. My energy had all but disappeared to the extent that even breathing was a high-end task. In my bedroom, alone, plastic casing enveloped my skin. I looked like Darth Vader, if Darth Vader spent a lot of time in Primark pyjamas. The cliche for this sort of thing is to say that the months that followed were a blur. But as anyone who has ever been through anything knows, really, it is the opposite. You wish it was a blur. You would pay good money for a haze, to black out for as long as it takes to get through the worst and re-emerge fabulous, like a contestant in a Netflix makeover show.

During a US Senate finance committee hearing, senator from Virginia Mark Warner slams Donald Trump's 10% tariff on Australian imports, referencing the free trade agreement between the two countries and the US trade surplus with Australia. Warner labels the new tariff policy 'insulting' and 'ridiculous', calling Australia 'one of our strongest allies'. Trump's trade chief Jamieson Greer replies that 'we should be running up the score against Australia'

The Australian government spent nearly $3m of taxpayer dollars advertising on Twitter/X in the first year after the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, took over the platform, despite warnings of brand reputation damage that caused the government to initially pause ads.

Data obtained by Guardian Australia, after a protracted freedom of information battle with the federal finance department, revealed $2.7m was spent between November 2022 and November 2023. Musk finalised his purchase of the platform on 28 October 2022.

Will Trump’s tariffs tip the world into recession? – podcast

As countries reel from the Trump tariffs, can a global recession still be avoided? Richard Partington reports

Just after midnight on Tuesday, EDT time, the wall of tariffs Donald Trump announced last week came into effect. The new system upends decades of precedent from the world’s strongest economy and has sent global markets reeling.

The Guardian’s senior economics correspondent, Richard Partington, explains to Michael Safi the dynamics of a market crash and a trade war and how together they may contribute to the onset of a global recession. However, as he makes clear, the world is not yet in that worst-case scenario and steps can still be taken to minimise the risk.

As Trump ignites tariff war, a US city is embracing Canadians with all its heart

An estimated 300,000 Canadians visit Palm Springs each year and Trump’s levies threaten tourism in the region

Worried that Donald Trump’s policies are scaring away Canadians, a key segment of their tourist industry, a California resort city has put up “Palm Springs Loves Canada” signs across its downtown.

“It was a gesture to let our Canadian visitors know that what happens in Washington DC, is not the way that Palm Springs is looking at Canada,” Ron deHarte, the city’s mayor, said of the signs, which were installed on Friday.

Ukraine war briefing: Zelenskyy demands answers over Chinese nationals fighting for Russia

9 avril 2025 à 02:32

The Ukrainian president says the Chinese nationals were just two of many fighting with Russian forces. What we know on day 1,141

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his government is seeking clarification from Beijing after Ukrainian forces captured two Chinese nationals fighting with Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region.

Zelenskyy said the captured fighters were two of many more Chinese members of the Russian armed forces, and he accused the Kremlin of trying to involve Beijing in the conflict “directly or indirectly”. A few hundred Chinese nationals are thought to have travelled to fight as mercenaries with the Russian army alongside others from Nepal and central Asian countries.

US state department spokesperson Tammy Bruce called the development “disturbing”, adding: “China is a major enabler of Russia in the war in Ukraine.”

Russian forces staged massive drone attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv late on Tuesday, triggering fires and injuring at least 17 people, regional officials said. In eastern Donetsk, the focal point of the 1,000-km (600-mile) frontline in the more than three-year-old war, a residential area came under attack in the city of Kramatorsk and local officials said residents were injured. In Dnipro, the attack sparked a fire, damaged houses and cars and injured 14 people, Serhiy Lysak, governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, said on Telegram.

Russia says it is close to regaining full control of its western Kursk region after pushing Ukrainian forces from one of their last footholds there. Russia’s defence ministry released a video of what it said was the recapture of the settlement of Guyevo set to dramatic music, showing smoke rising into the air from various buildings, a soldier waving the Russian flag from the window of a heavily damaged Orthodox church, and Russian troops carrying out house-to-house checks in case any Ukrainian soldiers were hiding. Ukraine officials have not commented on Russia’s claims, but its general staff said in a statement its planes had struck a complex of hangars and military buildings in the region being used by Russian drone operators and maintenance workers.

The US senate has confirmed the appointment of Elbridge Colby as its top policy adviser at the Pentagon, despite concerns he had downplayed threats from Russia and Vladimir Putin. Colby previously questioned whether Russia actually invaded Ukraine, echoing a false Kremlin talking point. After side-stepping repeated questions on whether he believed Russia did invade the country, he was forced to agree it had.

US and Russian delegates will hold talks on Thursday in Istanbul on restoring some of their embassy operations that have been drastically scaled back following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, the US state department confirmed.

‘We will have to raise prices’: gloom and resolve in Yiwu, on China’s trade war frontline

At the world’s largest wholesale market, vendors have reduced their exposure to the US but fear the repercussions of a global economic shock

If you have ever bought a Christmas decoration, a button, an electric shaver or any other cheap manufactured product, there is a good chance it came from Yiwu, a city in east China’s Zhejiang province that is home to the world’s largest wholesale market.

Covering more than 4m square metres, tens of thousands of suppliers have booths in Yiwu International Trade City. As the US and China exchange increasingly hysterical rhetoric and threaten ever-higher tariffs, it is vendors at places like Yiwu who are at the frontline of the new trade war.

Palau president delivers barb at Peter Dutton over ‘water lapping your door’ hot mic joke

Surangel Whipps Jr also strongly backs Australia’s bid to host a UN climate conference

The president of Palau has delivered a pointed barb at Peter Dutton while strongly backing an Australian bid to host a UN climate conference on behalf of the Pacific, arguing that it would boost regional solidarity and he would be “deeply disappointed” if the attempt was abandoned under the Coalition.

Speaking at a renewable energy conference in Sydney on Wednesday, Surangel Whipps Jr described seeing two-thirds of an island in his archipelago country disappear under water in his lifetime. “For those of us in the Pacific who have lived through storm surges, rising ocean levels and increasingly high tides, the phrase ‘water lapping at our door’ is not a metaphor or a punchline. It’s our fear and reality,” he said.

How ‘liberation day’ rout compares with other notorious stock market crises

A swift loss of £4tn from global stock markets has led some to liken Trump’s trade war to 1929 Wall Street crash

Drawing parallels with the 1929 Wall Street crash and the ensuing 1930s Great Depression, the US president’s “liberation day” tariff plan has led to warnings of a global recession from leading economists.

Trump reportedly to cut grant for key US steel project in Vance’s home town

Despite promises to bolster the US manufacturing industry, the Trump administration is reportedly planning to cut a key program that invests in some of the biggest manufacturing industries in the US, including in JD Vance’s home town of Middletown, Ohio.

Donald Trump is looking to slash a $500m grant from the Biden administration that was slated for Cleveland-Cliffs, a steel manufacturing giant in America’s rust belt, according to reporting from CNN. The grant was intended to help the company upgrade its ageing blast furnaces, so they would be powered by hydrogen, natural gas and electricity instead of coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel.

Frattesi puts Inter in control with win at Bayern Munich after costly Kane miss

8 avril 2025 à 23:03

Bayern Munich’s sentimental journey is at risk of grinding to a halt. The prospect of a home final will disappear if they do not win at San Siro next week and there may be no fairytale goodbye for one of their legends.

Thomas Müller is an all-Bavarian icon and, sniffing space in the manner that has defined his career, appeared to have salvaged at least a draw soon after arriving from the bench. The script seemed clear enough from there: three days after the announcement that a 25-year marriage is almost over, Muller would bring Bayern closer to a blissful reunion with the trophy they cherish most.

To my husband, Mahmoud Khalil: I can’t wait to tell our son of his father’s bravery | Noor Abdalla

8 avril 2025 à 20:58

Your wrongful detention is testament to the fact that you have struck a nerve. They are trying to silence you, but they will fail

Exactly a month ago, you were taken from me. This is the longest we have been apart since we got married. I miss you more and more every day and as the days draw us closer to the arrival of our child, I am haunted by the uncertainty that looms over me – the possibility that you might not be there for this monumental moment. Every kick, every cramp, every small flutter I feel inside me serves as an inescapable reminder of the family we’ve dreamed of building together. Yet, I am left to navigate this profound journey alone, while you endure the cruel and unjust confines of a detention center.

I could not be more proud of you, Mahmoud. You embody everything I ever hoped for in a partner and the father of my children. What more could I ask for as a role model for our children than a man who, with unwavering conviction, stands up for the liberation of his people, fully cognizant of the consequences of speaking truth to power? Your courage is boundless, and now more than ever, I am in awe of your strength and determination. Your voice, your belief in justice, and your refusal to be silenced are the very qualities that make you the man I love and admire.

Asensio makes PSG return with task of knocking parent club out of Europe

8 avril 2025 à 22:00

Aston Villa loanee faces unusual but not unprecedented challenge in the Champions League quarter-final first leg

Presumably some time between making another play for Marco Asensio and the Paris Saint-Germain forward pitching up on loan in February, Unai Emery, or at least Aston Villa’s administrative staff, sifted through the small print of Uefa’s regulations in case this very scenario presented itself. Less than three months after replacing Kvara Kvaratskhelia at Parc des Princes in a Ligue 1 draw against Reims, Asensio faces the unusual but not unprecedented challenge of trying to knock his parent club out of the Champions League, the competition PSG crave so badly.

Villa were on the other end of this peculiarity in October, though the stakes were nowhere near as high. When Bologna came to Birmingham, they arrived with a Villa player in their ranks. With Villa leading 2-0, coasting towards a victory that maintained their 100% start to the league phase, Samuel Iling-Junior entered late on to gentle applause from all sides. It was the 21-year-old’s first appearance at Villa Park – albeit for the visitors – and it could prove his last given Iling-Junior, who signed from Juventus last summer as part of the package that saw Douglas Luiz depart, joined Middlesbrough on loan in February.

Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez riles PSG by wearing World Cup triumph cap

Hurricane Helene made landfall in the early hours of Friday 27 September, in Big Bend, Florida. “The current forecast for Hurricane Helene suggests this storm will impact every part of our state,” Kemp said, but in Augusta, over in the east of the state, people felt safe, they had not had a hurricane here in almost 100 years, and this one was forecast to pass it by.
