Protection deal for Amazon rainforest in peril as big business turns up heat

3 décembre 2024 à 23:30

Exclusive: With Brazil’s politicians, agribusiness organisations and global traders piling on the pressure, the highly successful 2006 Soy Moratorium is under threat

One of the cornerstones of Amazon rainforest protection – the Soy Moratorium – is under unprecedented pressure from Brazilian agribusiness organisations, politicians, and global trading companies, the Guardian has learned.

Soy is one of the most widely grown crops in Brazil, and posed a huge deforestation threat to the Amazon rainforest until stakeholders voluntarily agreed to impose a moratorium and no longer source it from the region in 2006.

Rescue teams looking for three climbers who went missing on New Zealand’s highest mountain have found equipment belonging to the trio, police said , as a second day of searching was paused due to bad weather.

Vardy starts Van Nistelrooy welcoming party as Leicester add to West Ham woe

As one manager celebrated his first game in charge, another may have endured his last. Ruud Van Nistelrooy enjoyed a fortuitous but hard-earned victory as he could luxuriate in seeing Leicester move four points clear of the relegation zone but Julen Lopetegui must be fearing for the worst.

Having spent over £100m on new players in the summer, without seeing any marked improvement in the play or results of David Moyes’s team, the former Wolves manager might be relieved to still be in post by the time his previous club visit the London Stadium on Monday.

Rightwing president backs down after most serious challenge to country’s democracy since 1980s

South Korea’s rightwing president has been forced to back down after he unexpectedly declared martial law only to face unanimous opposition from the national assembly, in the most serious challenge to the country’s democracy since the 1980s.

President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late on Tuesday amid a dispute with opposition parties he accused of pro-North Korean sympathies and anti-state activities.

An experimental England side recorded a slender win over next summer’s European Championship hosts Switzerland as Sarina Wiegman gave youth a chance to impress in the Lionesses’ last friendly for at least six months.

The Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton’s early goal proved enough to earn England their second victory in this autumn’s four friendly fixtures, as Wiegman locked her eyes firmly on next summer’s major tournament and her potential squad selection.

Trump cites Hunter Biden pardon in request to dismiss hush-money case

3 décembre 2024 à 22:58

Lawyers file paperwork to formally request dismissal after judge in November put sentencing on hold indefinitely

Donald Trump’s lawyers have filed paperwork pushing for dismissal of his Manhattan criminal hush-money case – and have invoked Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter, in their argument.

“Yesterday, in issuing a 10-year pardon to Hunter Biden that covers any and all crimes whether charged or uncharged, President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted’ and ‘treated differently’,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in papers filed on Monday but which were not made public until Tuesday afternoon.

Mashinsky, 59, who led Celsius and was charged last year on seven criminal counts, agrees to plead guilty to two

Alex Mashinsky, the founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency lender Celsius Network, said on Tuesday he intends to plead guilty to two counts of fraud.

The former CEO, 59, was indicted in July last year on seven counts of fraud, conspiracy and market manipulation charges. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said he misled customers of Celsius to persuade them to invest, and artificially inflated the value of his company’s proprietary crypto token. He pleaded not guilty later that day.

Turner Prize: Jasleen Kaur’s winning, welcoming ode to Glasgow

3 décembre 2024 à 22:15

Pleasure and politics collide in Kaur’s work, which invites our curiosity again and again

I wanted Jasleen Kaur to win as soon as I’d seen this year’s prize show. Her work made me come back again, and simply to be there on her gigantic synthetic Axminster carpet.

Kaur invites our curiosity. Pio Abad’s work, mostly made during a residency at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum, is similarly rich with detail and stories, but felt illustrational, overdependent on the explanatory wall labels. Delaine Le Bas’s textile hangings and tents and impromptu drawings, with their skulking figures, their animals and printed footsteps on the floor, ended up too winsome to take seriously.

It’s the best of times for Notre Dame, but the worst of times for the French PM

3 décembre 2024 à 20:34

It seems Michel Barnier’s experience of negotiating Brexit with the British was no match for the bitter rivalry of French politics

When Emmanuel Macron welcomes world leaders to the reopening of Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral this weekend, after fire damaged it five years ago, he might have hoped it would serve as a metaphor for people from all backgrounds coming together to prevent a hallowed edifice collapsing.

Instead, it is likely the French government itself will have fallen by Wednesday evening, with voters’ trust of politicians and the political process in charred ruins.

Musk’s legal battle for his $56bn goes on. Tesla’s board still looks supine | Nils Pratley

Par : Nils Pratley
3 décembre 2024 à 19:54

The craven stance of Tesla’s board should not be lost in the legal back-and-forth

The first time around, judge Kathaleen McCormick of the Delaware court of chancery got it right. The $56bn pay package awarded by Tesla to Elon Musk in 2018 was indeed a governance abomination, a stitch-up in which ordinary shareholders weren’t told about the “deeply flawed” process whereby a “superstar ceo” secured wildly over-the-top terms from pliant directors.

Her closely argued ruling in January spelt it out in persuasive detail. The company had “inaccurately described key directors as independent and misleadingly omitted details about the process”. Ira Ehrenpreis, the lead director negotiating for Tesla, had a 15-year business relationship with Musk. Another member of the working group regularly went on holiday with Musk’s family. A third was the company’s general counsel and Musk’s former divorce lawyer.

A Hawaii woman who vanished after landing in Los Angeles three weeks ago disappeared voluntarily as she sought to “step away from modern connectivity” and was last seen crossing into Mexico, police said at a news conference.

Hannah Kobayashi, 30, appeared unharmed as she walked alone with her luggage into a tunnel at the San Ysidro crossing about 125 miles (201km) south-east of Los Angeles around noon on 12 November the day after her family reported her missing, LA police said Monday. The Guardian view on protests in Georgia: resisting a drift into Putin’s orbit | Editorial

Par : Editorial
3 décembre 2024 à 19:42

The Georgian Dream government’s suspension of EU talks has sparked an existential struggle for democracy

In recent years, Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party has brazenly pursued a policy of gaslighting an overwhelmingly pro-European population. Rhetorically, it has paid enthusiastic lip service to the national goal of eventual accession to the European Union, an aim that is enshrined in the constitution. In practice, a party founded by the billionaire oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili – whose wealth was accumulated in Russia – has been pulling Georgia ever further into the authoritarian orbit of Vladimir Putin.

“Foreign agent” legislation passed earlier this year – provoking large protests in Tbilisi – copied and pasted Russian laws designed to curtail the influence of independent civil society organisations. Subsequent restrictions placed on LGBTQ+ rights came from the same playbook. Having awarded EU candidate status to Georgia in 2023, these illiberal moves led Brussels to belatedly conclude that it was being taken for a ride by Mr Ivanishvili’s political placemen. Membership talks were accordingly paused in June. Nevertheless, in the lead-up to an election this October, GD politicians were still pledging their commitment to EU membership.

Ding Liren escapes after blunder in wild 72-move draw with Gukesh D in Game 7

3 décembre 2024 à 19:38

Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju came dangerously close to scoring a decisive result in Tuesday’s seventh game of his world championship match against Ding Liren only to allow his opponent off the hook, leaving the best-of-14-games match no closer to resolution in a 3½-all deadlock.

“The score is fine,” Gukesh said after the players settled for a fourth successive draw in the match at Resorts World Sentosa. “Obviously, today was a missed chance. That is a bit of a disappointment, but he also missed some chances earlier in the match. So, I think it’s fair that we are here. The second half will be, of course, crucial.”

2,000 Mules director apologizes to man falsely accused of voter fraud in film

3 décembre 2024 à 18:35

Dinesh D’Souza admits analysis in film that alleged massive 2020 voter fraud scheme based on ‘inaccurate information’

Conservative film-maker Dinesh D’Souza has issued a rare apology for his controversial documentary 2,000 Mules, a cornerstone of post-2020 election fraud conspiracy theories, but a prominent organization in the election denialism ecosystem is standing behind the film’s false claims.

The film alleged a massive voter fraud scheme involving individuals supposedly stuffing ballot drop boxes with illegal votes. Central to these claims was cellphone geolocation data provided by True the Vote, a Texas-based non-profit that has become a prominent actor in the election denial ecosystem.
