13 septembre 2025 à 19:19
  • Quarter-final: Canada 46-5 Australia

  • Canucks will face New Zealand in semi-finals

Expansive attacking rugby? Tick. Pick and go tries? Tick. Impressive defence and holding up tries? Tick. This Canada performance underlined why they are among the tournament favourites and had everything to set-up a tasty semi-final against the defending champions, New Zealand.

The wing Alysha Corrigan was a bright spark, scoring twice, as was Karin Paquin while the dependable Sophie de Goede had another solid outing for the side she used to skipper.

  • Borussia Dortmund cruise past 10-man Heidenheim

Kylian Mbappé scored and provided the assist for Arda Guler as Real Madrid weathered a second-half storm to beat Real Sociedad 2-1, maintaining their perfect La Liga start despite playing most of the match with 10 men.

The visitors got off to a flying start with Mbappé opening the scoring from a quick counter in the 12th minute, but their task became significantly harder when the defender Dean Huijsen was shown a straight red card after the half-hour mark for hauling down last man Mikel Oyarzabal.

  • Leader takes 1:16 advantage into Sunday’s final stage

Tom Pidcock stands to finish on the podium of the Vuelta a España on Sunday after surviving the final mountain test as Jonas Vingegaard rode away to take a stage 20 win that all but seals his overall victory.

Raucous crowd and sprint stars give World Athletics Championships explosive start

  • Beatrice Chebet roared on to 10,000m gold in Tokyo

  • Kishane Thompson and Julien Alfred shine in 100m

There was a moment on the opening night of these World Athletics Championships when the bottled up frustration of missing out on a full-fat Tokyo Olympics – with crowds and fun and unbridled joy – suddenly seemed to be unleashed. It came at the end of a thrilling women’s 10,000m, a roar that could have been heard on Mount Fuji, and a vast outpouring of appreciation and pride.

At the front of the pack, four contenders were whittled down to two before the Olympic and world champion Beatrice Chebet took off with the Italian Nadia Battocletti in pursuit. It was like watching Wile E. Coyote chasing Roadrunner.

Zohran Mamdani says as mayor he would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he traveled to New York

13 septembre 2025 à 17:31

Mayoral candidate said he’d try to honor ICC warrant for Israeli prime minister’s arrest over war crimes

If he wins his fall election, Zohran Mamdani would order New York’s police department to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu in the event that the Israeli prime minister ever traveled there, the city’s leading mayoral candidate said in a recent interview.

Mamdani – the Democratic nominee in the 4 November election – alleged to the New York Times on Thursday that Netanyahu was a war criminal who was committing genocide with Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, according to a report published by the outlet on Friday. He said he would honor an international criminal court (ICC) arrest warrant issued in November 2024 for Netanyahu’s arrest over alleged Gaza war crimes by having the Israeli leader taken into custody at the airport if he ever steps foot in New York and Mamdani is the mayor.

Martín Zubimendi’s zest a bitter pill for Postecoglou as Arsenal batter Forest

13 septembre 2025 à 15:53

When Ange Postecoglou dreamed it beforehand, he imagined a result to kickstart his Nottingham Forest tenure, silencing a group of opposition supporters that have long been against him in the process. The former Tottenham manager could scarcely have hand-picked a spicier debut assignment. Then reality intervened.

This Arsenal team are not easily pushed around. They give away next to nothing at the back. They crave control of the ball and the flow of the game. Their mission is to suffocate and punish and they made sure that Postecoglou’s return to north London was as uncomfortable as possible – and not only because of the predictable taunts he heard from the stands.

Kévin Rouet, the Canada head coach, is a-OK with the idea that his side are being overlooked in this tournament, despite their lofty world ranking. “It makes sense – New Zealand are reigning champions, England are world No 1 – we are happy with it.

New Zealand blitz South Africa after break to reach Women’s Rugby World Cup semis

13 septembre 2025 à 16:14
  • Quarter-final: New Zealand 46-17 South Africa

  • Black Ferns score six tries in second half

In New Zealand rugby the female of the species is deadlier then the male. South Africa’s women were always going to struggle to replicate the Springboks’ record-breaking result in Wellington a few hours earlier, but after a stop-start first half the Black Ferns raised their level significantly in the second half to secure their place in next weekend’s World Cup semi-finals.

That said, the final score does not tell the full story of a contest that was often as notable for South African power as belated Kiwi finesse. South Africa, smartly coached and packed with forward muscle, took their opponents on physically in virtually every area and, at 10-10 at half-time, had the Black Ferns genuinely rattled.

Everton v Aston Villa, Fulham v Leeds, Championship updates and more: football clockwatch – live

It’s full-time at the Emirates, Arsenal have dispatched Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest 3-0. Murillo going off in the first half will be a concern for the visitors but the Gunners were excellent. Mikel Arteta was missing a few starters but the players coming off the bench showed the depth now running through his team.

Nick Woltemade immediately comes into the Newcastle starting XI after his £73.5m move, but World Cup winner and Guardian columnist Philipp Lahm is less than convinced with the big man:

He has not yet developed any consistency or patterns – not in his first touch, not in his combination play, not in his timing on headers, not in his shooting. His goals are not the logical consequence of excellent actions and skills. His excellence is not repeatable. And he still has to prove that he can last 50 games in a season, because he is tall but not robust.

Women’s suffrage is apparently up for debate again in America | Arwa Mahdawi

13 septembre 2025 à 15:00

The country’s finest male intellectuals – including some in positions of power – are weighing in on the matter

Should women in the US have the right to vote? You’d be forgiven for assuming this particular issue was sorted out quite a long time ago. But, because we live in hell, it seems the question is once again up for debate.

Not by women, though; the fairer sex is obviously too emotional for such muscular discussion. So please sit this one out, ladies, and listen to what America’s finest male intellectuals have to say.

Assassination in Utah, school shooting in Colorado: one day in US gun violence

13 septembre 2025 à 15:00

Reaction to the shocking killing of Charlie Kirk has largely overlooked the obvious: the country is awash with guns and people prepared to use them on fellow Americans

At 12.23pm on Wednesday, as the rightwing influencer and provocateur Charlie Kirk was addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University, a single shot rang out. He was struck fatally by a bullet in the neck, sending thousands of screaming students scattering in all directions and propelling the country into a new and dangerous crisis.

Exactly one minute later, at 12.24pm, about 450 miles to the east in Colorado, a 911 call came in to first responders in the mountain town of Evergreen. A 16-year-old student had opened fire with a revolver on high school grounds, critically injuring two fellow students before turning the handgun on himself.

As the rock band played the final stop of their sold-out reunion tour near LA, it was clear: Liam and Noel Gallagher have become icons stateside

After a crowd of nearly 90,000 finished singing Don’t Look Back in Anger, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher had a question.

“Are we dating?” he asked fans at the Rose Bowl, a stadium just outside Los Angeles, last Sunday night. “America, Oasis, the new hot couple, yeah?”

Brisbane crush Gold Coast to remain king of Queensland and book AFL preliminary final spot

13 septembre 2025 à 14:27

It was billed as the biggest game in Queensland ever: reigning AFL premiers Brisbane against their state rivals from down the M1. The long-derided Gold Coast had finally arrived as a force, winning an elimination final in an ecstatic finish over Fremantle, via a last-gasp point to retiring club great David Swallow.

For a short time, the semi-final looked like it might live up to its billing. And then it fell apart. The Suns barely fired a shot after half-time, overpowered by a manic Lions side desperate to atone after being humiliated by Geelong in Melbourne last week. Brisbane now face Collingwood in a preliminary final at the MCG on Saturday. Gold Coast are done.
