Apple researching how to make a 'Star Trek' communicator badge

Apple has been researching how to make a small, wearable loudspeaker that would use beamformed audio to make it clearly audible to the wearer, yet not disturb anyone else.

Apple calls a newly-granted patent by the name, "Wearable Device with Directional Audio," but it's really "Star Trek: The Next Generation." At heart, this is how to solve the problem of your entire Away Team plus enemy aliens hearing when your mother calls to ask if you remembered your coat, or why you forgot your Humane AI Pin.

"A wearable device can provide an audio module that is operable to provide audio output from a distance away from the ears of the user," says Apple. "For example, the wearable device can be worn on clothing of the user and direct audio waves to the ears of the user."

Apple in talks with Rivian, likely over Apple Car revival

Apple is said to be investigating a partnership with a US electric vehicle firm, believed to be Rivian, in a move that could mean reviving the Apple Car.

The whole Apple Car project was reportedly scrapped in February 2024, with its team redeployed to AI work. Unusually, the cancellation of a decade-long project was even seen as good news by analysts.

However, according to Digitimes, Apple is even now contemplating a partnership with an EV firm. Beyond a belief that the firm is Rivian, there is no further detail — and even citing supply chain sources, Digitimes specifically says the news is speculation.

As previously expected, and heavily hinted at by Apple's "Let Loose" event logos, a new Apple Pencil has been launched. The Apple Pencil Pro now takes the place of the 2018 second-generation model as the top of the range.

In addition to all of the features of that second generation model such as hover mode, the Apple Pencil Pro adds squeeze gestures. Squeezing the sides of the Apple Pencil Pro can bring up a menu, so users don't have to keep moving around the screen.

Announced alongside the launch of the new iPad Pro, Apple's two main pro creator apps have been updated with new features to take advantage of the faster M4 processor. Final Cut Pro 2 in particular uses the capabilities of that processor to add live multi camera work on the iPad Pro.

"Live Multicam enables filmmakers to connect and preview up to four cameras all at once, all in one place," said Will Hui, Apple Product Manager, Creative Apps. "Creators can remotely direct each video angle and dial in exposure, white balance, focus, and more."

Apple's iPad upgrades march Lightning one step closer to death

After 11 years, 6 months, and 5 days of valiant charging and data service, the Lightning port is no longer on any iPad that Apple sells.

You'll never see it again — a Lightning port on an iPad

It's easy to be glad about the move to USB-C for Apple devices, because it's (usually) faster, and because now USB-C is in the iPhone, the iPad, and a MacBook Pro can be charged over USB-C. Even the Siri Remote for Apple TV 4K is now USB-C.

That has taken a long time — the iPad Pro moved from Lightning to USB-C in October 2018. It's possible that Apple would have kept the Lightning port for even longer, at least on the iPhone, if it were for the EU introducing laws mandating USB-C.

Never let it be said that Apple does not sweat the details. Back in 2019 when it launched the Apple Watch Series 5 with its first-ever always-on display, Apple was even specific about who did and did not get to wear one.

It was very simple. If you presented anything during that keynote before the Apple Watch Series 5 was announced, you wore a Series 4 — and everyone afterwards wore a Series 5.

The iPad Air is decidedly the mid-range option in the Apple tablet catalog. It's a step up from the iPad and iPad mini in offering Pro-level performance through its use of Apple Silicon, but it's not quite at the level of the iPad Pro range itself.

Apple's last change to the iPad Air was in March 2022, meaning there has been a two-year gap between the fifth and sixth generations.
