Currently, Sony supplies the OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panels used in the current Apple Vision Pro. The Elec, which covers Chinese industrial trends, says that Apple has sent a request for information to both Samsung and LG for possible panels.

According to the report, Sony will continue providing screens for the Apple Vision Pro, but has no plans to increase production capacity. It is thought that Sony provides Apple with up to 900,000 such panels per year.

Apple's wearable in its product catalog is the Apple Watch, and it has helped it capitalize in the smartwatch market. But there's always a group of customers who would rather wear something else instead of a watch.

The seeming answer to that is a smart ring, and Apple's not the only one seemingly in the field. The Oura ring has been around for years, offering biological monitoring while being worn around a finger.

Even before the iPhone 16 hits the streets, the latest research from investment firm JP Morgan shows that iPhone sales are continuing to increase in China, helped in part by a recovering smartphone market in the region.

iPhone 16 Pro is expected to benefit from an upgrade super cycle

In the last couple of months, JP Morgan has told its investor clients that Apple's problems in China were increasing, but that it would recover. Then after WWDC's announcements, JP Morgan raised its Apple stock price to $245 in anticipation of a strong upgrade cycle for the iPhone 16 range because of the forthcoming Apple Intelligence.

Now it's reporting that sales in China have already begun to improve. Specifically for the latest data covering May 2024, JP Morgan says that sales are already increasing.

How to use Vehicle Motion Cues in iOS 18 to reduce motion sickness

Introduced in the latest developer beta of iOS 18, Vehicle Motion Cues cuts down motion sickness while you're reading your iPhone when travelling. Here's how to turn it on.

Dots along the sides of the iPhone slide up and down the screen along with the motion of the phone

Originally announced for Global Accessibility Awareness Day in May 2024, the new Vehicle Motion Cues iPhone feature is going to be known as the great idea with dots. As your iPhone moves, so do optional dots on the screen, and that's all there is to it.

But it's enough. If you are susceptible to motion sickness then typically it's exacerbated by your reading a screen instead of looking out of the window of the car or train.

Apple Weather's heatwave predictions probably won't apply to you

Apple Weather for iOS has come under fire again for a record-breaking temperature prediction that the service maintained for a few hours that seemed unlikely. Here's where the data comes from.

Apple's Weather app on an iPhone

Many iPhone users depend on Apple's Weather app on the iPhone to determine the weather for the day or week ahead. However, while it is highly used and reasonably accurate most of the time, it can sometimes offer questionable forecasts.

The most recent example is from Fresno, California. On Thursday, GVWire reports the Weather app's predictions on Thursday said there would be highs of 121 degrees for July 6 at one point, far above the 115-degree record high set in 1905.

Apple's head of retail Deirdre O'Brien is in China for the Apple Vision Pro rollout

As announced during the WWDC 2024 video, the Apple Vision Pro has begun rolling out to more territories across the world. The international rollout comes almost five months since the Apple Vision Pro was launched in the US.

Due to that protracted delay, some international users travelled to the US to buy a headset, even as some of them then found the headset being confiscated by Customs in their countries. At least some got through, though, as social media postings show that the very first Apple Vision Pro buyer in Japan was filmed by an existing user.

EU hits back at Apple withholding Apple Intelligence from the region

European Union chief Margrethe Vestager says that Apple refusing to launch Apple Intelligence or iPhone screen mirroring in the EU is a "stunning declaration" of how anti-competitive the company is.

On June 21, 2024, Apple announced that it will not be releasing either Apple Intelligence or iPhone Mirroring for users in the EU. At the time, Apple said that it "was committed to collaborating with the European Commission" to launch the features, but has security concerns because of requirements of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The European Union did not immediately respond publicly. However, its antitrust executive Margrethe Vestager was directly asked about it in an interview at the Forum Europa conference in Brussels.

There are drastic steps to take, if your tattoo is hampering your Apple Watch

If you're thinking about getting a wrist tattoo, your Apple Watch may not be able to detect your pulse — but it's fixable with some money and pain.

An Apple Watch could have trouble with a user's tattoos

The Apple Watch, like many other wrist wearables, relies on light to gather data points about a user's heart activity. However, users with tattoos on their wrist can sometimes find that the sensor doesn't work all the time.

In a post to TikTok, a person is seen undergoing a laser tattoo removal procedure on their wrist. A tattoo sleeve covers the wrist, which causes the Apple Watch sensor to fail.

Glued iPhone batteries may be a thing of the past, if this new tech works out

Apple is reportedly testing ways to make it a lot easier for users to remove the glue holding down the battery in the iPhone, with a report suggesting the new tech may arrive as soon as the iPhone 16.

Hands carefully removing a lithium-ion battery from the interior of a smartphone, revealing its internal components.
Pulling a battery out of an iPhone

Like many mobile devices, the battery in the iPhone is a very difficult to service element. In the majority of cases, owners have to submit their iPhones to Apple or authorized repair centers to switch a worn battery for a new one.

With a large amount of components to remove to access it, as well as adhesives, the battery is quite difficult to replace normally. A user can do so via a self-service repair, but that still requires the rental of specialized tools from Apple itself.

Apple wants to help you open real-world locks just by looking at them

Apple is researching how to bring the simplicity and security of biometrically protected passwords to real-world objects like bike locks, door codes, safes, and more with the help of iPhone or Apple Vision Pro.

A bicycle secured with a U-lock shows an unlocked combination code: 5116, displayed on a small digital panel. Background features a diamond pattern.
Apple's tech could allow for at-a-glance combination code access and guidance.

In this patent Apple has plans to tackle the problem of having to remember real-world combination lock codes, door security codes, and more. The patent describes a process of simply looking at a physical object, seeing associated codes, and unlocking steps stored on the device.

Point an iPad or iPhone at the device, or simply look at it with an Apple Vision Pro or an iPhone using the upcoming iOS 18 glance detection feature called Eye Tracking, and the correct combination and instructions on unlocking it will appear.

Forget folding screens, Apple is working on stretchable ones

New research that suggests the future "iPhone Fold" could have a stretchable display on the outside, instead of one that just folds. Here's how Apple thinks it can be done.

Apple is lagging behind other smartphone firms by not yet having an iPhone Fold, but it keeps trying — and reportedly has a couple of prototypes. What it also has, though, is a slew of other devices that could benefit from a screen that's more flexible than usual.

It's already been reported that a foldable iPad could replace the iPad mini in 2026. And Apple is looking at making a foldable MacBook Pro.

US AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile users overseas hit by major outage

US users travelling overseas are sporadically unable to use the internet or even make calls on their iPhones, due to what appears to be a massive, global outage for the major carriers.

In February 2024, AT&T had an outage in the US — and later paid a miserly $5 compensation to users. Now there's an outage for the rest of the world, and it's affecting users on T-Mobile and Verizon as well as AT&T.

Every American traveling in Europe right now with #Verizon is waking up unable to order an Uber, check banking, log in to their bank, use Google Maps, call a friend or hotel — ANYTHING — massive global roaming outage. Dangerous. Zero comms from Verizon. HELP @StateDept @cnnbrk

There are many browsers available on macOS, and it's always worth setting your preferred browser as your default.

Using a browser that isn't set to your default on macOS can be an enormous pain. There are few things more annoying than trying to open a link from Messages, only for it to open up in a browser you don't use.

Within macOS Sonoma, making the change can be quick and easy. Depending on the browser you want to make your default, you may not even have to take a trip to System Settings.
