macOS Sequoia review: the first macOS with more potential than new features

Apple's macOS Sequoia is chiefly a tale of two halves, with all of the better improvements coming later. But what's here now is good, sometimes even very good, but it definitely doesn't feel like the full picture.

Every year Apple brings out a new macOS and it tends to follow a similar pattern. At first you notice some visual differences and some small improvements, but in those first hours of use you're not sure it was worth the upgrade for anything other than security reasons.

Shortly after those few hours, though, there is a cumulative effect where all of the little changes and benefits become at least subconsciously apparent. It's subconscious because you only truly notice when you try to go back to last year's macOS.

macOS Sequoia arrives with the promise of Apple Intelligence

After being unveiled at WWDC 2024 and then working its way through rounds of beta versions, macOS Sequoia has now been officially released. It is the new current version and all Macs sold from today onwards will have it preinstalled.

That's the same as happens every year, but macOS Sequoia has a difference — and it's called Apple Intelligence. When historians look back at significant macOS releases, this is going to be one of them because of Apple Intelligence.

But it isn't here yet.

iPadOS 18 review: making iPad better for everyone but the pros

16 septembre 2024 à 19:11
Depending on who you ask, iPadOS 18 is an excellent update that maintains parity with iOS 18, or it's a tragedy that doesn't address pro users' needs. The truth is complicated.

iPadOS 18 review

Apple introduced the iPad Pro with M4 weeks ahead of WWDC, leaving users wondering if that signaled big changes were coming in iPadOS 18. As expected, that wasn't the case since Apple provided very little in terms of new exclusive features for the tablet OS.

When I reviewed the 13-inch iPad Pro, I shared some of my quibbles with iPadOS and how it pertains to pro workflows — leaving some hope for WWDC and AI. The end result is nothing really changed from that perspective, and even AI isn't the boost for iPad some thought it could be.

iPadOS 18 arrives with Smart Script and Calculator

16 septembre 2024 à 19:07
Everyone will have to wait a little longer for Apple Intelligence on iPad, but for now, iPadOS 18 has launched with the long-awaited calculator app and new Smart Script handwriting feature.

iPadOS 18 is here with Smart Script and Calculator

Apple didn't have much to say about iPadOS 18 during WWDC because a significant portion of new features were either inherited from iOS 18 or Apple Intelligence. Even then, Apple's AI features won't be available on iPad until iPadOS 18.1 is released to the public.

So, if you focus on what's exclusive on iPad in 2024, there's not much. A new Smart Script feature learns the user's handwriting for autocorrect and making notes more legible.

You can now install iOS 18 to your iPhone

Following its June WWDC introduction and months of beta testing, iPhone owners can finally update their devices to iOS 18. Installable via the usual software update process, the new operating system can be downloaded to devices around the world.

However, while users will expect to try out the headline feature of Apple Intelligence, it won't be available at first. Beta testers have been trying out some of the functions, which the public should be able to start using from the iOS 18.1 update.

During the September 9 "Glowtime" event, Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 10, as well as the new feature, sleep apnea detection. While the feature was announced, Apple couldn't bring it to the Apple Watch until the FDA approved it.

A 510(k) Premarket Notification in a medical device database updated on Monday reveals the FDA approved an "Over-the-counter device to assess risk of sleep apnea." The listing doesn't specify the Apple Watch specifically, but that is the only device in Apple's product line that offers the feature.

Across the board, every review so far of the new AirPods 4 has concentrated on how remarkably good Active Noise Cancellation is.

The first review of Apple's new AirPods 4 are out, and while there are some qualifications and some disagreements, every single reviewer has called out Apple for surprisingly great noise cancellation. They also all note that that while the extra $50 for the more expensive version is worth it, Apple has now made it harder to choose between models.

To be clear, Apple has released two versions of the AirPods 4 at $129 and $179. Neither will have the health features that are coming to the updated AirPods Pro, but they do both have improved sound.

"Slow Horses" has been honored for its writing before, but this was its first nomination at the 76th Emmys. Showrunner Will Smith won for the drama's third season, based on Mick Herron's book "Real Tigers," which streamed on Apple TV+ in November and December 2023.

"The Morning Show" also took home an Emmy, this time a second win for star Billy Crudup in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus may have been the bestsellers in debut weekend

16 septembre 2024 à 02:13
Basing his analysis on slipping ship times from Apple's ordering web page, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple is seeing lower demand for the high-end iPhone 16 models and higher sales for the regular iPhone 16, along with the iPhone 16 Plus.

Two iPhone 16 models, one in ultramarine blue and the other in teal green, display colorful abstract wallpapers. Color options in light blue, green, pink, white, and black are shown below.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus appear to be the top sellers for the debut weekend.

While these claims are only based on initial demand, Kuo claims Apple sold around 37 million units on the new iPhone's first weekend. He says that this is down 12.7 percent from the iPhone 15 lineup debut.

The iPhone 16 Plus, which starts at $899, is up 48 percent over the iPhone 15 Plus from last year, despite the entire new lineup retaining the same price points. The regular iPhone 16's initial sales are up 10 percent over the iPhone 15's debut weekend.

iOS 18 Repair Assistant forces parts pairing for users

16 septembre 2024 à 00:22
Repair Assistant is coming in iOS 18 to handle the proper configuration of new or used Apple parts — but potentially plaguing some users of already-repaired iPhones.

Scenarios such as replacing a broken screen or replacing a battery with an official new or salvaged part can be configured directly using Repair Assistant, without the need to contact Apple. The procedure, often referred to as "parts pairing," can significantly improve the performance of the part.

For example, if a user replaces the screen on their iPhone but doesn't configure the part, some important features may not function. Using Repair Assistant to configure the new screen will ensure that enhancements such as True Tone and auto-brightness are on and functioning properly.

'Flappy Bird' resurrection is likely a ploy to push crypto

13 septembre 2024 à 22:11
"Flappy Bird" was slated to relaunch in 2024 after more than ten years of absence from the App Store — but there are signs that it's just a crypto Ponzi scheme.

On Thursday, a group of alleged "Flappy Bird fans" announced that they would revive the decade-dead global hit. While many were excited, an equal amount seemed skeptical.

And, as it turns out, there was a good reason for the skepticism. The relaunch appears designed to hock crypto.
