How we work: William Gallagher's mess of Mac apps and cables

William doesn't just work at AppleInsider, he also has a bunch of other writing assignments going constantly. Here's how William juggles not just the demands here, but everywhere else too.

Desk setup with keyboard, Stream Deck displaying multiple icons, a red tumbler, wireless earbuds case, clock, and a small keyboard under a large monitor.
That green keyboard toward the back is my newest and quite expensive toy, a Duolingo Piano

I'm Deputy Chair of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and also do some work for a UK charity, so I tend to have whole sets of apps and documents that I switch between. Whatever I've been doing before AppleInsider, I run a Keyboard Maestro macro and all of those apps and documents are closed, then everything I need for AppleInsider is opened.

Every day — seven days a week — starts with the Fantastical calendar and OmniFocus To Do apps on my iPhone. The alarm goes off, those two apps go on, and I'm checking what I must do that day. Invariably the day means being at my office M1 Mac mini or on my M1 Max 14-inch MacBook Pro, and AppleInsider work always starts with Keyboard Maestro.

Is Incogni legit? Find out how to protect your privacy online and avoid scams

It's natural to be suspicious of a company offering to erase your data online, especially if most other companies exist to profit from your data. Learn why Incogni is trustworthy.

Chances are you've realized that all of your data is available and for sale online. Data brokers buy and sell user data as a commodity — and whether it's used for ad targeting, stalking, or identity theft isn't a consideration.

That's why it's important to reduce your digital footprint, thus reducing the data available to gather and sell. However, that's only part of the solution for increased data privacy.

How to change what the iPhone 16 Camera Control button does

26 décembre 2024 à 15:15
Unless you've gone looking in System Settings, you may not be aware that the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models can be set to do other functions besides set up and take a picture. Here's how to change it.

A hand holding an iPhone, capturing a close-up of a textured, industrial-looking structure with greenery in the background.
The Camera Control button is currently unique to the iPhone 16 lineup.

By default, pressing the Camera Control button launches the Camera app on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Once open, pressing the button again will take a picture, or pressing and holding will shoot video.

A light press on the Camera Control button once the Camera app is open gives users a haptic click and the ability to adjust settings like zoom level or exposure. It operates sort of like the dials or on-screen controls in DSLR cameras.

How we work: Malcolm Owen's sprawling setup

Malcolm's workspace has handled his work, gaming, and photography lives for years. Here's how he spends his days working and most of his time off.

A cluttered wooden desk with multiple monitors, a tablet, keyboard, mouse, smartphone, coasters, and various desk accessories against a wall with whiteboards and bookshelves.
Malcolm Owen's home working setup

After working from home for a decade, and spending spare time on computers for far longer, you'd expect a person in that situation to have perfected their computing setup. In my case, it's not perfect, but it's more than capable of handling whatever I want to do.

This is a setup primarily for working from home, rather than for portability. It's also one that has been constructed with budget being a major factor, and so changes have been very gradual over the years.

Ending Google search partnership would hamstring Apple, says Eddy Cue

24 décembre 2024 à 21:57
In a declaration filed on Monday, Apple's senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, asserted that Apple has no interest in creating its own search engine and would prefer to continue to use Google.

In 2022, Google paid Apple $20 billion to be the default search engine on its devices. The result was a boon for both Google and Apple, with Apple receiving about 36% of the ad revenue generated from Safari search result advertising.

The declaration, spotted by Reuters, is Apple's attempt at defending Google. Cue's stance is the same one that the company has defended for quite some time now.

The declaration lists several reasons Apple is satisfied with its deal with Google. It also explains why the Cupertino tech giant has no interest in creating its own search engine.

In November 2020, Apple announced the M1 chip, its first foray into in-house designed processors for its Mac lineup. The move effectively severed ties between Apple and Intel, the latter responsible for previous processors in Apple's computers.

Now, it seems like Apple is gearing up to reduce its reliance on another third-party developer — Nvidia. Currently, Apple works with Nvidia to power many of the features behind Apple Intelligence.

MiniLED, as used in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro could be superseded by microLED

Apple has gradually changed the display technologies it uses in its products over the years. After using TFT, OLED, and mini LED, the next shift to microLED could end up being helped by an investment by a supply chain partner.

In a Tuesday announcement, Foxconn revealed a partnership with Porotech, a company working in the augmented reality industry, with a background in display technology. Under the partnership, Foxconn will be entering the AR glasses market, with the two working on microLED wafer processing and optical module packaging.

The dream of an all-glass iPhone will have to wait a bit longer

24 décembre 2024 à 15:35
The iPhone 18 may become the first model to be bezel-free, but development of the all-glass iPhone is hitting some snags.

Current iPhones have a bezel around the display

The iPhone, like many other smartphones, offer users a large display but with a small border around the outside. While the bezel has been minimized over the years, it may become a thing of the past by the iPhone 18.

According to sources of TheElec, Samsung Display and LG Display are working on OLED screens that don't have bezels. Both companies are key members of Apple's display supply chain, and the work is apparently being performed at Apple's request.

As part of an ongoing antitrust case related to its search engine, Google has submitted proposed remedies responding to the court decision, including how Apple may be affected.

Google has issued its remedies proposal in an ongoing antitrust lawsuit.

Google has been the subject of multiple antitrust lawsuits since 2023, when it was accused of knowingly breaking antitrust laws. The DOJ said that the company was an illegal monopoly in the search market, and courts eventually agreed with this assessment in August of 2024. Now, Google has taken the next step, after which it plans to submit an appeal.

Before Google can file an appeal, it's required to file a remedies proposal. The proposal outlines the steps Google could take in order to rectify the issues highlighted in the court's initial decision. The company has made it clear, however, that it's only submitting a remedies proposal as it's required by law.
