Mastercard may be in for a fight to stay Apple Card network provider

There's been a quiet battle between banks to be the next Apple Card issuer as Goldman Sachs moves on, but another battle is brewing between networks to take over from Mastercard.

Apple Card could go with Visa for payment network

Apple is set to move Apple Card from Goldman Sachs at some point soon, but Apple could switch payment networks in the process. Goldman Sachs previously suggested it wanted to rid itself of Apple Card in 12 to 15 months as of November 2023 — so the move is past due.

Before the card issuer changes, however, Apple may choose to sign a new contract with a different payment network. The current network is Mastercard, but according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Visa and American Express are fighting for the position.

Future Apple Vision Pro headsets could get an Action Button

Apple is researching how to best add a touch-sensitive component that a user can customize to the Apple Vision Pro, that is very much like the Action Button on the iPhone.

If it works, add it to everything. The Action Button started life on the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022, but then came to the iPhone 15 Pro, and is now on all models of the iPhone 16.

Now a newly-granted patent shows that Apple has fully researched giving the Apple Vision Pro an Action Button in the form of a touch-sensitive region. The patent, originally filed in June 2023, is called "Electronic Devices with Finger Sensors."

Users are often warned of the dangers of the Internet, with privacy issues prompting some to sign up for a VPN service. While there are many legitimate iPhone VPN services on the market, some have been found to be a potential national security risk.

A report from research group Tech Transparency Project looked into the top 100 free virtual private network (VPN) services offered in the App Store to users in the U.S. in 2024. In tracing the corporate ownership of each, the investigation found that one in five were owned by Chinese companies.

Computing would be totally different had Apple not been formed 49 years ago, today

The Apple of 1976 is unrecognizable compared to today's gigantic corporation, and yet key early decisions by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and more, are still having their effect today.

Back in 2021, Tim Cook marked the then 45th anniversary of Apple with a tweet looking back to his friend and colleague, co-founder Steve Jobs.

As Apple celebrates 45 years today, I'm reminded of Steve's words from many years ago: "It's been an amazing journey so far, yet we have barely begun." Thanks to every member of our Apple family for all you've done to enrich lives. Here's to the next 45 years & beyond!

2025 Mac Studio review: One clear purchase choice for most buyers

Apple's 2025 Mac Studio brings with it the latest Apple Silicon chips and a few more changes that power users will love. One model is a must-buy, and the other is still excellent — but very clearly not for everybody.

The Mac Studio isn't called the Mac Pro, but it might as well be. Like the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio is as much computing power as Apple can bring to bear, in a compact metal box.

In 2025, that legacy of power remains intact. For now, it's faster than the fastest Mac Pro, albeit minus PCI-E slots.

How to backup your Mac

Whether it's a MacBook Pro that's always out on the road with you, or a Mac Studio that gets left in an office, your Mac holds critical data and you've got to back it up.

Apple works very hard to make it so that you don't have to consciously think which of your computers you need to use. You can start writing a sentence on your iPhone and finish it off on your Mac Pro without thought.

But that same way your data is available to you across all your devices is also a way that tricks you into thinking it's all safe. If your MacBook Pro is stolen, at least all the data is still on your office Mac, for instance.

That's not entirely wrong, but it's still dangerous. If you delete something on, say, your MacBook Air, it will be deleted everywhere.

How to backup your iPhone or iPad

It's not enough to just let your iPhone back up to iCloud, not when you need to be sure you won't lose anything important. Here are your options for backing up iOS devices.

Steve Jobs once made a point of telling an audience that he hadn't backed up in all the years he had been at NeXT. However, that wasn't because backing up is unimportant. It was because it was so important that every NeXT employee's data was automatically backed up for them.

Maybe Jobs brought that ethos to Apple, because the company has worked to progressively make backups easier - and unthinkingly so. You see this whenever you change iPhones and all of your apps, and their data, appear on the new one.

But as convenient as that is, it also makes you unthinkingly assume that your data is safe. It isn't, not unless you take positive steps - and regularly.

The problem is that Elon Musk isn't happy about Apple's investments with Globalstar and in satellite communications, since it directly competes with Starlink.
