Ubisoft sued for shutting down The Crew

12 novembre 2024 à 18:00

Earlier this year, Ubisoft shut down all online services for its 2014 racing game, The Crew. As an extra step, Ubisoft also went and removed the game from customers' digital libraries. Now, the company faces a lawsuit for making the game defunct.

Two people who bought the game have filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft claiming the company violated California consumer protection laws. The filing claims that Ubisoft misled customers by not properly disclosing the ‘limited license' nature of their game purchase.

As many gamers already know, digital games have included legal language in their terms and conditions for many years now, stating that users own a license to play the game and not the game itself. Given how common this is, especially in the T&Cs of an online-only game, it seems likely that Ubisoft will be able to use this as part of its defence.

The lawsuit argues that Ubisoft sold players “a key to open the gates of a remote server, which Defendants could on day decide to fail to maintain”.

Following Ubisoft pulling online services for The Crew, a petition known as Stop Killing Games began gaining traction, seeking to obtain political intervention on the issue of game preservation. This also prompted Ubisoft to begin working on an offline mode for The Crew 2 and the most recent game in the series, The Crew Motorfest.

KitGuru Says: I think the age of the online-only single-player game should come to an end. If a game can be played solo, then there should always be an offline option. Multiplayer games can also live on for generations by offering gamers the option to host their own servers. This is the exact reason all of Valve's classic games are still playable today, and many other old-school multiplayer PC shooters.

Valve is releasing a Limited Edition White Steam Deck OLED

12 novembre 2024 à 17:30

Valve has announced a surprise new Steam Deck model. For a limited time, the Steam Deck OLED will be available in white.

The Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White will be available starting from the 18th of November, starting at 11PM GMT.

Hello! We're excited to announce that Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White will be available worldwide on November 18th, 2024 at 3PM PST. This model will cost $679 USD, and will be available in all Steam Deck shipping regions.

— Steam Deck (@OnDeck) November 11, 2024

As this version is limited edition, stock will be “allocated proportionally” across regions where the Steam Deck is available. Aside from the fresh White look, it is no different to the normal 1TB Steam Deck OLED model. To give some contrast, the buttons and thumbsticks on this version are grey.

The Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White will cost £599, which is slightly more expensive than the standard black version. This practise is often observed in the PC case market as well, where white models tend to be a touch more expensive than their black counterparts.

KitGuru Says: I've been very happy with my Steam Deck OLED since getting it earlier this year. Having seen this white version now though, I do hope Valve launches the next Steam Deck with black and white options.

Rockstar fixes GTA Definitive Edition Trilogy, three years after launch

12 novembre 2024 à 10:00

It has been three years since Rockstar's remasters of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas came to PC and console platforms. At launch, these definitive edition versions were a broken mess, resulting in delays for the planned mobile ports. The mobile versions eventually arrived in significantly improved form, and now those changes are finally making their way over to PC and consoles.

After three years of waiting, major updates have now arrived for Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: The Definitive Edition on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The update is sizeable, coming in at over 18GB for San Andreas, over 8GB for Vice City and over 4GB for Grand Theft Auto 3.

As spotted by Rockstar Intel, the update includes several of the improvements found in the mobile versions of these games, including the new Classic Lighting mode, which does away with the Definitive Edition's botched lighting and brings back the more colourful look of the original games. Crucially, Classic Lighting is now the default option when you launch any of the three games.

Other improvements have been made to the sky and clouds in the game, character models, textures, weather effects and more. Those subscribed to GTA+ can play the definitive edition trilogy for free through the Rockstar Launcher. Netflix subscribers can download the game on their smartphone or tablet as part of their subscription. Alternatively, the game is available to purchase directly via Rockstar, Epic Games and Steam, as well as digitally on Xbox, PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch.

KitGuru Says: Have you tried the latest GTA Trilogy update? Has the game improved from its disastrous launch?

New Jonsbo TH AIO cooler combines multiple fans into a single frame

Par : João Silva
12 novembre 2024 à 16:15

Jonsbo has introduced an intriguing update to its watercooler lineup, which now includes the TH series. Featuring an LCD designed to display essential monitoring metrics, this interface aligns with a back-end software experience that prioritises functionality over extravagance, a refreshing choice in an era dominated by increasingly complex displays.

As shown by the images shared by CowCotland, the company uses single-frame fans to cool the radiators of the new TH series watercoolers. So, if one fan fails, you must replace the two or three within the frame. However, the continuous RGB lighting strips, which are only possible because the TH AIOs use a single frame, add a nice look. In other words, you're pretty much trading repairability for aesthetics.

Regarding sizing, Jonsbo is concentrating on the popular 240 mm and 360 mm configurations while skipping the 280 mm variant, at least for now. Consumers can choose between white and black finishes, catering to different build preferences. The radiator is crafted from aluminum, featuring twelve channels and a thickness of 27 mm. The pump operates at up to 2400 RPM, delivering a flow rate of 1.3 L/min. As for the fans, they're adjustable between 700 and 2400 RPM, providing a maximum airflow of 62.4 CFM. The fans' static pressure ratings weren't disclosed.

On the compatibility front, the cooling solution supports a widely-used range of sockets, including AM4, AM5, 115x, 1200, 1700, and 1851. The package includes a black mounting kit, thermal paste, and a spatula for application.

KitGuru says: Should manufacturers launch more AIO watercoolers with single-frame fan sets?

Antec unveils CX600M Trio mATX case with three tempered glass panels

Par : João Silva
12 novembre 2024 à 15:45

Antec has unveiled its latest offering: the Antec CX600M Trio mATX PC Case. This addition to Antec's chassis lineup combines a compact footprint with modern aesthetics, making it an ideal choice for builders focusing on more compact setups for high-performance gaming rigs.

Antec's new CX600M Trio has three seamless tempered glass panels on the top, front, and sides. This design enhances the case's overall appeal and gives users an unobstructed view of their builds.

The case leverages a dual-chamber layout, segregating the cooling systems for the CPU and GPU on the left from the PSU and drives on the right. This partitioning enhances thermal performance in each chamber thanks to the vents positioned at the bottom and sides. The integrated 1.5 mm mesh on the right serves a dual purpose: it keeps dust at bay while maintaining efficient airflow to enhance system cooling efficiency.

Within the CX600M Trio, you can daisy-chain the included case fans with two additional ones and synchronise the ARGB effects. For enthusiasts looking to expand their cooling capabilities, the Trio supports the installation of a 360 mm radiator at the bottom in conjunction with a 240 mm radiator on the side. The Antec CX600 M Trio, priced at €109/£89.99, will be available in black at retailers within 1 or 2 weeks. A white variant is expected to follow in January.

KitGuru says: Are you planning on building a new PC in a compact case? The Antec CX600M Trio might be worth checking if it's within your budget.

Nvidia App officially leaves beta – here is everything available in full release

12 novembre 2024 à 14:50

Earlier this year, Nvidia rolled out the Nvidia App, a new homebase for GeForce graphics card users to update drivers, system and display settings, as well as other features. The app has been in public beta testing for months but as of today, it is now officially out of beta with the latest update.

The latest version of the Nvidia App brings it out of beta and into full release. The app has had several updates since its debut, bringing over more advanced settings from the painfully old Nvidia Control Panel. The new Nvidia App also acts as a hub for other Nvidia services, so you can quickly load up GeForce Now, or Chat RTX, RTX Broadcast, Frame View and other tools.

The first tabs of the Nvidia app are simple and already well known to those who have previously used the GeForce Experience software. The home page shows your recently played games, as well as a banner with the latest driver update, and a section for all of Nvidia's additional applications. The drivers tab is where you go to find the latest Game Ready drivers. If you load up the Nvidia app today, you should have a new driver release ready and waiting for you.

The graphics tab has two main windows. One for one-click optimal settings for supported games, and another for global settings. The global settings tab comes over directly from the old Control Panel, allowing you to set global preferences for low latency, frame rate, G-Sync, V-Sync, image sharpening and more, without having to load up the old and slow Control Panel UI.

The System tab lets you adjust display settings, including access to HDR and Video Super Resolution tools, a full breakdown of your PC hardware, and a performance tab that lets you automatically overclock your graphics card for higher performance in games.

The settings tab lets you set up a shortcut for the Nvidia Overlay, or switch it off entirely. The overlay can be used to access performance tuning features, broadcast and recording features, game filters and other handy tools. You can also disable filters and photo mode entirely from the settings. You can also set preferences for driver notifications and game install locations.

Overall, the Nvidia App has shaped up to become a fine replacement for the Control Panel and GeForce Experience apps, with a much cleaner UI. With that said, there are still some features that have not yet migrated over from the Control Panel, which advanced users may miss, like the option to force a specific type of anti-aliasing or ambient occlusion, and anisotropic filtering. Personally though, I've never been one to dive into the global 3D settings and force a method of anti-aliasing or ambient occlusion. The Surround and PhysX options are also still only available through the Control Panel.

If you ever need to access one of these settings, however, then you can still open up the classic control panel by right-clicking your desktop, or by going through the shortcut found in the Nvidia App.

You can download the full release version of the Nvidia App HERE.

KitGuru Says: Have you been using the Nvidia App in recent months? What has your experience with it been like?

Montech launches MKey Pro mechanical keyboard with Gateron G Pro 3 switches

Par : João Silva
12 novembre 2024 à 14:00

Following the success of the MKey mechanical keyboard, Montech has now introduced the MKey Pro, a new keyboard with a 75% layout. Built with premium materials and a wealth of top-tier features, the MKey Pro is a direct response to the feedback from Montech's community.

Available in two colour themes (Freedom and Darkness), the MKey Pro offers users the option between Gateron G Pro 3.0 Yellow or Brown switches (both pre-lubed). The switches' frosted, light-guided surface enhances backlight brightness, while the upgraded pins ensure stabler and smoother keystrokes. Moreover, using Yuehu's hot-swap sockets, the keyboard supports both 3-pin and 5-pin switches. The included switch puller allows users to swap out switches effortlessly.

As for connectivity options, users can transition between Bluetooth 5.2, Wireless 2.4 GHz, and USB-C wired modes, ensuring a robust connection in any setup. A magnetic cover for dongle storage is included. Designed for endurance, the MKey Pro has impressive battery longevity, providing up to 310 hours of use without ARGB lighting and an astonishing 100,000 hours under standby mode.

At the heart of the MKey Pro's design is its gasket-mounted architecture, complete with poron padding. This structure delivers a quieter and lower-pitched typing sound and effectively absorbs vibrations, enhancing both the tactile and acoustic typing experience. Adding to its functionality, the MKey Pro features a multifunction knob that offers three operational modes, each illuminating the lighting ring in its own way: volume adjustment (blue and white), zoom (red and white), and ARGB lighting control (rainbow).

For the keycaps, Montech decided to use high-grade PBT featuring an OEM profile designed to enhance comfort during prolonged use. In addition, the MKey Pro is fully compatible with VIA and QMK software, allowing users to remap keys and create custom shortcuts and macros easily. The Montech MKey Pro keyboards are now available for $89.90 regardless of switch option and colour option.

KitGuru says: Of the four colour and switch combinations available for the MKey Pro, which one would you choose?

TinyBuild announces Hello Neighbor 3 as a multiplayer game

12 novembre 2024 à 13:15

The original Hello Neighbor was quite a big viral hit online when the indie stealth horror released back in 2017. While its sequel failed to live up to expectations, the publishers at TinyBuild have now announced a proper third entry in the series.

Releasing a devlog onto YouTube, TinyBuild officially announced that they are working on Hello Neighbor 3.

Described as another attempt “on a lifelong journey to create a unique sandbox where every decision is the right one,” Hello Neighbor 3 will be a multiplayer title, this time having you invade other players’ houses – all the while trying to increase the security in your own property.

As mentioned, the original Hello Neighbor was a massive hit – one which the team have so far struggled to live up to with its successors.

Its sequel  unfortunately went through a ton of different changes over the course of its development – for better and for worse.

That said, with the 3rd proper entry it seems as though the team have hunkered down to figure out exactly what makes the series an enticing one.

Hopefully Hello Neighbor 3 does not disappoint when it comes to PC at some point in the future. The Steam page can be found HERE.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

Super Nintendo World Direct shows off Donkey Kong park

12 novembre 2024 à 12:30

In partnership with Universal, Nintendo has been building its own suite of theme park attractions and locations, with the past few years seeing the opening of Super Nintendo World in Japan and Hollywood. Following a report from last year revealing that the park will be getting a new Donkey Kong themed section, Nintendo has now announced and published a Super Nintendo World Direct to show off the latest addition to its theme park.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the company wrote “Tune in on 11/11 at 2 p.m. PT for a SUPER NINTENDO WORLD Direct livestream! The stream will be roughly 10 minutes and showcase Donkey Kong Country of #SuperNintendoWorld at Universal Studios Japan. No game information will be featured.”

As mentioned, word of a Donkey Kong section was first heard all the way back in December of last year, where it was claimed to be 1.7 times bigger than the current Nintendo World set-up – with a promotional CG video released at the time.

Now, we are able to witness the changes in its full glory. With the Donkey Kong section finally set to be live soon, it will be interesting to see when the other rumoured additions to the park are officially shown off and made available.

Leo Says 77 – Intel ‘fesses up about Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200S

Par : Leo Waldock
12 novembre 2024 à 11:53

The launch of the new Intel Core Ultra 200S family of CPUs along with Z890 motherboards was a thorny process. KitGuru suffered along with pretty much every other review site on the planet and you may have noticed we held off from reviewing of the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K as it is clear to us that Intel has some work to do before this platform is ready for action.

Watch on YouTube below:

Timestamps:

  • 00:00 Leo speaks
  • 01:27 Recap and some fixes
  • 02:42 How well do they perform?
  • 04:20 Intel have spoken out
  • 05:22 Memory latency
  • 07:06 Other issues and more fixes?
  • 08:33 Robert Hallock reaches out to Leo
  • 09:31 Intel seem to be accepting the blame

KitGuru's launch coverage of Intel Core Ultra 200S developed into a workshop where we showed you how you overcome a series of problems as you install Windows 11 on this new PC platform. That was unexpected as installing Windows is generally the easy part of the process but sadly things went off the rails and we figured the best thing was to share our pain with you, our audience.

Core Ultra 200S is a dramatic departure from 14th Gen Raptor Lake and we fully expected that Core Ultra 9 285K would match the performance of Core i9 14900K while using significantly less power. Instead we saw a dip in gaming performance and the entire community of reviewers was left baffled. It turns out Intel was been confused and had been carrying out a great deal of analysis.

Robert Hallock, VP and General Manager, Client AI and Technical Marketing at Intel joined Hot Hardware for a discussion about these problems and what Intel is doing to fix the situation.

KitGuru says: It is clear that Intel is looking for the light at the end of the tunnel with Arrow Lake. Just as soon as things are fixed you can be sure we will deliver reviews of the CPUs and also of Z890 motherboards.

EA is considering adding subscriptions to Apex Legends

12 novembre 2024 à 11:15

While it remains one of the more popular live-service battle royale experiences, Apex Legends has not been without its own set of controversies. Following in the footsteps of Fortnite, it seems as though EA are toying with the idea of introducing a subscription service to Apex Legends.

As reported by Insider-Gaming, a selection of Apex Legends players were sent a survey by EA, asking them whether they would have any interest in a ‘monthly subscription’ service for the game.

According to the survey, such a subscription would include “monthly in-game currency amount, monthly rewards, and Battle Pass tiers” – not too dissimilar to the likes of Epic Games’ Fortnite Crew service.

Apex Legends EA

As mentioned, Apex Legends has had a few slip-ups in recent months, with the most recent being the backlash toward their plans for a revamp of the game’s battle pass system – making it harder to earn future passes. This was quickly reverted following a slew of backlash.

Given the fact that this is just a survey, it’s possible that nothing might come of it. That said, it’ll be interesting to see what the publisher chooses to do with the results – which will hopefully indicate a strong disinterest in such a feature. We will have to wait and see.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this possible addition? Would you be against it? Could they make a subscription worth it in any way? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Stellar Blade x NieR:Automata arrives later this month

12 novembre 2024 à 10:30

Back in September during the most recent State of Play, it was announced that the PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade would be getting a crossover with the much loved NieR:Automata. While details were light at the time, we have now gotten more information on the collaboration – including its release date.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, DongKi Lee – the CTO and Technical Director at studio Shift Up – said: “The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! A fantastic collaboration where the worlds of Stellar Blade and Nier:Automata meet.”

Even prior to the game’s release, Stellar Blade and NieR:Automata were brought up by fans and the studio alike as being somewhat parallel to one another, and so this collab makes sense.

NieR:Automata Stellar Blade

According to Lee, “Nier:Automata significantly inspired Stellar Blade. The collaboration between Director Kim Hyung Tae and Director Yoko Taro, marked by mutual respect and creativity, led to this successful outcome.”

In terms of what you can actually expect from this crossover, iconic NieR character Emil will make an appearance as a shop vendor, in which “eleven different collaboration-special items will be available. Items that intertwine the best of both games, leading you to a more enriched world.”

You will of course also be able to obtain a number of costumes which transform Eve into the likes of 2B and A2, though the full details on the update – which is set to go live on the 20th of November – can be found HERE; including details on the photo mode, new costumes and more.

Nintendo sues creator for playing pirated Switch games on Twitch

11 novembre 2024 à 18:50

Nintendo has made headlines with a few high-profile lawsuits this year, targeting massively popular Switch emulators like Yuzu and Ryujinx. Now, Nintendo is also targeting those who uploaded videos promoting Switch piracy and the use of those emulators.

This week, it came to light that Nintendo is suing Jesse Keighin, also known as Every Game Guru. Keighin is accused of streaming pirated Nintendo games, in some cases, weeks ahead of a game's release after obtaining leaked game files.

Keighin wasn't exactly subtle about his use of Switch emulators. The lawsuit filing includes screenshots of different streams, which clearly display the emulator status bar for both Ryujinx and Yuzu. Nintendo also points to PC stat monitoring software shown in the corner of some streams. PC gamers will be very familiar with the overlay, which displays the graphics API, frame rate, as well as CPU/GPU usage stats.

In the lawsuit, Nintendo states:

“By not only streaming leaked games, but also directly providing users links to circumvention software, Nintendo’s proprietary cryptographic keys, and pirated ROM repositories, Defendant is giving his viewers everything they need to pirate as many games as they wish. Indeed, Defendant recently boasted online that he wants to ‘help anyone and everyone who wants to get Nintendo games for free (and early), or who needs help installing and setting up Switch emulators that let you play Switch games for free”.

The lawsuit lists ten specific titles that Keighin has streamed prior to release. The company is seeking $150,000 in damages for each of those games streamed, as well as $2500 per ‘act of circumvention', which would mean each stream where a pirated game was played, as well as $2500 for each time he provided links to direct viewers towards piracy-enabling resources.

In total, the damages will equate to millions and as there is clear evidence of piracy being utilised for these game streams, the situation does not look good for the defendant.

KitGuru Says: While some headlines have made this sound like a case of Nintendo going after someone for simply playing games on an emulator, the situation is quite different. This is a case of an online content creator actively taunting Nintendo and repeatedly streaming leaked copies of games ahead of release. If you are doing that in private, off-stream, you probably aren't going to get served with legal papers.

Take-Two CEO downplays Xbox Series S performance concerns ahead of GTA 6

11 novembre 2024 à 18:30

There is no getting around it, the Xbox Series S is the weakest console of the current generation, offering a fraction of the horsepower available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This has led to some developers needing extra time to get new-gen games running on the system and in some cases, it has led to delays for Xbox versions of certain titles, like Baldur's Gate 3.

Due to situations like that, some fans have raised concerns over Rockstar's next game, Grand Theft Auto 6, and its viability on the Xbox Series S console. However, Take-Two chairman and CEO, Strauss Zelnick, says there is no cause for alarm.

During Take-Two's earnings call last week, the Rockstar parent company was asked about GTA 6 and the Xbox Series S. Zelnick responded by saying: “We support the platforms where the consumers are for as long as they’re there, and we find a way to support platforms despite different levels of tech”.

Zelnick expanded further, saying that he's “never worried” about hardware, as it is something he has zero control over as a software company.

For what it is worth, anyone worried about GTA 6 on an Xbox Series S should really go back and try playing Grand Theft Auto 5 on a PS3 or Xbox 360. That game was a technical marvel at the time and it just goes to show how much Rockstar can do, even when hardware is on the weaker side. Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Xbox One was also an impressive technical feat.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Rockstar will get Grand Theft Auto 6 running perfectly fine on an Xbox Series S, albeit at 30FPS. At this point, I'm not even sure if we'll get 60FPS options for the game on the higher-end consoles, like the PS5 and Series X, although the new PS5 Pro should be able to manage it.

KitGuru Says: Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track to arrive in Fall 2025. Are you planning on picking it up on console, or will you be holding out for the PC version?

Black Ops 6 is selling 60% better than MW3 on PS5 and PC

11 novembre 2024 à 18:00

There has been a big question mark lingering over Game Pass and its viability moving forward with mega franchises like Call of Duty. It is believed that Microsoft themselves were questioning whether or not to bring the series to Game Pass due to potentially hurting sales. Based on launch numbers, it seems those fears can now be put to rest.

In a recent interview with The BBC, Treyarch producer, Miles Leslie, talked up the success of the studio's most recent game, Black Ops 6. Since launch on the 25th of October, the game has gone on to become a best-selling game, topping charts.

More importantly, Leslie revealed that this year's Call of Duty garnered 60 percent more players at launch on PlayStation and Steam compared to last year's Modern Warfare 3. This shows that Game Pass has not hurt sales of Call of Duty on PlayStation, nor has it put PC players off from buying the game.

We do not yet know how many copies the game has sold in total, or if the game has seen a sales hit on Xbox specifically due to Game Pass. Currently, the majority of Game Pass subscribers are on Xbox consoles, but Microsoft has been making an effort to boost growth on PC and cloud.

KitGuru Says: So far, putting COD on Game Pass does not appear to have made a dent in the PS5's market share, just as Microsoft predicted in its arguments to regulators seeking to block the Activision acquisition.

Spyro finally heads to Game Pass

11 novembre 2024 à 17:30

Microsoft has been slowly bringing Activision titles over to Game Pass since acquiring the company late last year. Most recently, titles like Diablo, Call of Duty, StarCraft and Crash Bandicoot have made their way over. Next up, our favourite purple dragon is joining the Game Pass library.

In a tweet today, Microsoft confirmed that Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be available across Game Pass, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate on the 12th of November (tomorrow).

Spyro is coming to Xbox Game Pass! Jump into the Spyro Reignited Trilogy on @XboxGamePass and @XboxGamePassPC November 12.https://t.co/nrGsgHpvWI

— Xbox Wire (@XboxWire) November 11, 2024

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy was developed by Toys for Bob as a follow-up to the fantastic Crash Bandicoot remakes found in the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Edition Trilogy. The quality bar here is high, with all three original Spyro games all looking fantastic on modern displays.

Toys for Bob has since split off from Activision and gone independent, although the studio has struck up a publishing deal with Xbox, ensuring their next game will still come to Game Pass, Xbox consoles and PC.

KitGuru Says: The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is one of the best remakes around, far surpassing the quality bar found in some more recent ‘remasters'. If you've not had a chance to play it, I highly recommend it.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle gameplay deep-dive released

11 novembre 2024 à 17:00

We are less than one month away from the release of Machine Games' upcoming title, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. If you're looking to see more of the game before buying, a 15-minute deep-dive gameplay video has just dropped.

We now have 15 minutes of uncut Indiana Jones gameplay. The video showcases cutscenes, puzzles and combat, as well as confirmation that your character will be upgradeable over the course of the game.

Skill points are renamed to Adventure Points in this game, but they serve the same function. Over the course of the game, you'll earn points to spend to upgrade skills.

Interestingly, there are also stealth elements to the game, so if you'd rather sneak around nazis and take them down one by one, you can. Just remember to pick up the bodies and hide them in the shadows to avoid alerting additional enemies.

Latest Steam client drops support for Windows 7, 8 and macOS 10

11 novembre 2024 à 16:30

As we enter 2024, it's becoming increasingly clear that gamers still on Windows 7 or 8 must upgrade their OS. Steam's official support for these outdated operating systems ended on January 1st, but users could still install new versions of the client. That changed with the latest version released this month.

For those running a Windows 7/8 system, your Steam client will no longer receive automatic updates. Microsoft ended support for both operating systems in 2023, and slowly, third-party companies have also begun dropping support as well. This also means these platforms do not support the latest DirectX libraries, and users face limited compatibility with modern graphics drivers. For gamers, this makes running older operating systems less viable.

For those committed to improving their gaming experience, the logical choice is to upgrade to Windows 11. Alternatively, a shift to Linux could also be a solution.

The latest Steam client also dropped support for macOS 10.13 or 10.14. You can check the rest of the update notes here.

Leak claims to show 2025-2026 AMD roadmap for mobile and laptop

11 novembre 2024 à 16:00

In a recent video titled “2025 Platform Outlook,” the well-known Chinese leaker, Golden Pig Upgrade, reported on AMD's upcoming plans for the laptop segment in 2025 and 2026. In addition to the Strix Halo iGPU naming, the report mentions Strix and Kraken Point refreshes, Fire Range high-end laptop CPUs, and RDNA 4 laptop GPUs.

Lately, AMD's iGPU naming convention has been something like the x00M series, as seen from the 600M, 700M and 800M iGPU series released by AMD in the last few years. However, with Strix Halo, it seems things are about to change for its iGPUs. According to the Golden Pig Upgrade (via VideoCardz), the Strix Halo platform will introduce a new visual naming convention aligned with the AMD Radeon RX 8000 series launch in early 2025. However, it's important to note that these integrated graphics won't carry the RX branding, nor will they be based on the RDNA4 GPU architecture. Instead, they'll use the RDNA3.5 architecture.

The most powerful iGPU within the Halo lineup reportedly features 40 CUs and is to be named Radeon 8060S. Then, there's the 8050S, which houses 32 CUs, and a 16-CU variant that remains to be named (8040S?). In addition, the leak also hinted at a new Ryzen AI Max APU, which would come with 6 Zen5 cores and the 16-CU.

Looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, the roadmap shared by Golden Pig Upgrade indicates refreshes for the Strix Point and Kracken (Point) platforms. This refresh could include modest XDNA (NPU) performance enhancements, though specific details remain scant. The leaker also reiterated the expected rebranding of Hawk Point as the Ryzen 200 series, which is anticipated to be released next year. However, unlike its counterparts, it will lack the upgraded XDNA 2.0 NPU that meets Microsoft's Copilot + standard.

Meanwhile, the Fire Range series, the successor to the Dragon Range, was also mentioned, although detailed specifications are still under wraps. This series is aimed at the enthusiast mobile segment, typically characterized by a TDP of 55W, and will feature the same I/O die as its predecessor. However, integrated graphics will remain tied to RDNA2, just like the Ryzen 9000 desktop counterparts. There are also updates on memory support for the Fire Range series, which are rumoured to support 5600 MT/s.

As for the Radeon RX 8000M series, it's still unclear how many SKUs are planned. At present, it's known that AMD is working on Navi 4x GPUs, with the possibility of multiple SKUs across different chips. Golden Pig's leak indicates that the RDNA4 mobile portfolio will include four undetermined SKUs with a maximum power draw of 175W. The top SKU, rumoured to be the R25M-E6, is anticipated to offer 16 GB of VRAM with a 256-bit memory bus. AMD is also developing an alternative R25M-E4 model, expected to follow the same 80-175W TGP of the E6 model.

The other two GPUs, the R25M-P6 and R25M-P4, are set to target lower maximum power levels at 130W and 150W, respectively. The R25M-P GPU models are also expected to feature 8 GB of VRAM across 128-bit memory buses.

AMD x86 desktop CPU market share hits eight-year high

Par : João Silva
11 novembre 2024 à 15:30

AMD has significantly bolstered its desktop x86 CPU market position, achieving a remarkable increase of 5.7% in Q3 2024 compared to the prior quarter. This marks the most significant quarterly rise since market share statistics began being recorded back in 2016. The company's share in the x86 market now stands at 28.7%, representing a whopping 9.5% increase year-over-year.

The surge in AMD's market share correlates with an impressive leap in revenue share, which grew by 8.5% from the previous quarter, according to Mercury Research (via Tom's Hardware). This increase can be attributed to the successful launch of the new Ryzen 9000 series processors during a tumultuous period for rival Intel, whose Raptor Lake chips faced stability issues that generated widespread negative coverage. Moreover, according to Dean McCarron of Mercury Research, inventory adjustments from a key customer have also affected Intel's share.

While Intel continues to dominate the client PC sector with 76.1% market share, AMD's gains are noteworthy, increasing by 2.9% quarter-over-quarter and 4.6% year-over-year. Intel's expansive product portfolio and strong presence in the corporate market ensure it retains a leading position, but the shifting dynamics suggest that AMD is tightening the gap.

AMD's best-performing area in Q3 2024 was the desktop segment, with the company capturing its largest share in at least 8 years. However, the company's growth trajectory extends beyond desktops, as it also witnessed progress in the laptop segment. The company captured 22.3% of the x86 laptop CPU market, up 2 percent from the previous quarter and 2.8 percent YoY. Although this figure still trails its peak of 24.8% in Q2 2022, AMD's launch of the Ryzen AI 300 series before Intel's Lunar Lake products may have helped it attract early adopters of x86-based Copilot+ PCs. Lastly, AMD holds a 24.2% share in the server market, with marginal increases of 0.1 pps QoQ and 0.9 pps YoY.

Despite retaining a 75.8% unit market share, Intel faces increasing competition from AMD, as the red team consistently outpaces it in high-end CPU sales. In a remarkable milestone for the company, AMD's data center business unit outperformed Intel's data center and AI division in revenue for the first time in Q3 2024, generating $3.549 billion compared to Intel's $3.3 billion.

KitGuru says: Do you think AMD will eventually outpace Intel in the x86 market, or will Intel find a way to keep itself in the lead?

Konami greenlit MGS: Delta because young gamers “aren’t familiar” with Metal Gear anymore

11 novembre 2024 à 14:45

There was once a time when Konami reigned supreme near the top of the video game developer/publisher podium, with the company being responsible for franchises including but not limited to Castlevania; Bomberman; Contra; Frogger and of course Metal Gear Solid. With the classic MGS 3: Snake Eater getting a remake in the form of ‘Delta’ Konami have revealed why they chose to bring back Snake and the Metal Gear series.

As reported by GamesRadar+, in the latest issue of Play Magazine producer for the Metal Gear series – Noriaki Okamura – spoke on the reasons as to why the IP is being brought back now instead of some other time, stating:

“One of the things that really sparked us to do the remake in general is because we realised that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore.”

Okamura continued, “It was basically our mission, our duty, to kind of continue making sure that the series lives on for future generations. After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say—but again, who is Solid Snake?”

Konami Metal Gear

This isn’t the first time that Okamura has spoken on the legacy of Solid Snake, stating in a different interview last month that “Before everyone who was involved in the original is gone, we need to create a path to preserve the Metal Gear series for 10 or 50 years into the future. I think this is something we have to do.”

The story of the Metal Gear Solid series is a tragic one, with the breakdown of relations between series creator Kojima and publisher Konami tainting the series for years. Hopefully a full decade removed from all the drama is enough time to allow the dust to settle.
