Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga Gets New Trailer Ahead of Cannes Premiere

17 mai 2024 à 19:06

A new trailer for Horizon: An American Saga is here, offering a fresh look at Kevin Costner's two-part western ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

The trailer takes its large ensemble cast back to the Old West to show how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of families, friends, and foes. Some of these relationships and brewing tensions are shown in the clips as various characters face off against one another with fists, flames, and gunfire.

In addition to co-writing and directing the two-chapter cinematic adventure, Costner saddles up as Hayes Ellison, leading a star-studded cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Tatanka Means, Tom Payne, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Michael Rooker, and many more.

Horizon: An American Saga spans the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, chronicling an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of those that stride or ride on horseback across the land, all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Chapter One and Chapter Two of the saga will be released in theaters nationwide, the first on June 28, 2024, and the second on August 16, 2024. Variety has also learned that it has nearly sold worldwide, with only a few territories left ahead of its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival (out of competition) on May 19.

Other films premiering at Cannes, both in and out of the main competition, include Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis and George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Young Sheldon Actor Iain Armitage Bids Farewell as Show Ends After 7 Seasons

17 mai 2024 à 16:34

Young Sheldon star Iain Armitage has shared a heartfelt Instagram post marking the end of the series and his run as the show's titular boy genius.

The actor, who has played young Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory spin-off for seven seasons, bid farewell to the series in an Instagram post that coincided with the two-part finale airing on May 16. He reflected on his time in the role and also looked ahead to the future, saying he is "excited to see what's next."

"I've always wondered what this day would feel like, and now it's here!" Armitage wrote in the caption of the post. "Thank you for a wonderful ride. I will miss everyone so much, and I want you to know that it's been an honor to play this part, and it's been a joy to work with people I love so much. I'm excited to see what's next, and I hope you'll join me on the next chapter, whatever that is. I truly hope you enjoy the finale. It was made with a lot of love."

Armitage was only eight years old when he landed the lead role on Young Sheldon and started filming his scenes for the first season, which aired in 2017. He has also starred in several other projects, with a notable turn as Ziggy Chapman in the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, premiering in the same year as Young Sheldon.

Warning! Spoilers about the ending of Young Sheldon follow below.

Young Sheldon aired for a total of seven seasons consisting of 141 episodes, including its send-off episodes this week. The finale featured Jim Parsons reprising his role as Sheldon Cooper on-screen for the first time since The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, along with Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler, now Sheldon's wife.

While this was a final swan song for many characters, some will live on in the Young Sheldon spin-off Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. The series will focus on the characters of young married parents Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment), so, at this time, it is unclear if any of the Coopers will appear in the series.

More news is expected in the coming months as Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is set to premiere in Fall 2024, though there is no exact date yet.

Captain America: Brave New World a 'Reality-Based Superhero Movie', The Leader Actor Says

17 mai 2024 à 14:01

Captain America: Brave New World actor Tim Blake Nelson has credited Marvel Studios and director Julius Onah for wanting to make a "reality-based superhero movie" with the Anthony Mackie-led sequel.

Appearing as a guest on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast, Nelson, who is reprising his Incredible Hulk role as Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, in the fourth Captain America film, teased a more grounded superhero outing, which also tied in with them taking a practical approach with the creation of his character.

"They were on board 100% to do the character as practically as possible.

"I'm very happy about [Brave New World]. It's a wonderfully directed movie by Julius Onah," Nelson said. "I can tell you, about my character, that we did everything we could, and this was entirely supported by Marvel, and I'm so grateful to Kevin Feige and [producer] Nate Moore for supporting this: they were on board 100% to do the character as practically as possible with an absence of digital stuff.

"I really credit Marvel and also Julius [Onah] for wanting to make a very much reality-based superhero movie, as oxymoronic as that sounds," he added. "In terms of our approach to The Leader, that's really where we went, and I was really gratified to do it that way."

Nelson's Samuel Sterns was last seen in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, lying on the ground, where his transformation into someone comic fans know as The Leader seemingly began. The character was affected by Bruce Banner's blood, greatly increasing his mental abilities, so Brave New World will likely follow-up on that.

Kevin Feige and Anthony Mackie debuted the first footage from Captain America: Brave New World at CinemaCon 2024, but plot details are still largely under wraps. However, the story will explore "what makes somebody Captain America" while tapping into Sam Wilson's underdog status as he takes on the titular mantle.

Captain America: Brave New World will arrive in theaters on February 14, 2025, as part of the next wave of Marvel movies after Deadpool & Wolverine — which is the only MCU release on Disney's slate this year.

Return to Silent Hill Movie Unveils First Look at Pyramid Head

16 mai 2024 à 17:51

The first image from Return to Silent Hill reveals the movie version of Pyramid Head, the famed monster from the video game series.

Things are starting to take shape with the film adaptation of Silent Hill 2, as today, Variety debuted the first image of arguably one of the franchise's most terrifying and iconic villains, Pyramid Head. The live-action version of the character wears a massive iron helmet that conceals their face and a large section of their body.

The movie iteration of Pyramid Head also equips them with the villain's iconic weapon, many will know as the Great Knife, as he stands menacingly behind some rusty iron bars, which are bent out of shape, giving fans a better look at the fearsome figure (who, in the past, has taken inspiration from an executioner in Braveheart).

Pyramid Head first debuted in Silent Hill 2 and has appeared in many other Silent Hill games since. It has even made guest appearances in Super Bomberman R and Dead by Daylight. IGN ranked Silent Hill 2 as the scariest game of all time, with the character's reveal being one of our most unforgettable video game moments.

Christophe Gans, the director of the original Silent Hill movie from 2006, is back to helm Return to Silent Hill. He has also co-written the script with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider. Victor Hadida has boarded the project as a producer under his Davis Films banner with Hassell Free Productions' Molly Hassell and David Wulf.

The film will follow "James (Jeremy Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil" and "terrifying figures both familiar and new."

In other words, Pyramid Head will not be the only foe lurking in the Return to Silent Hill movie when it eventually hits screens.

Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis to Get Global IMAX Release

16 mai 2024 à 16:19

Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis has secured a global IMAX release, but there is no date for when it will hit those screens just yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press at a Cannes Film Festival event on Thursday that the company had committed screens around the world to show Megalopolis. The IMAX release date will likely be announced at a later time, as the film is still waiting to secure a U.S. distributor.

"The film is going to get an Imax release," Gelfond confirmed, revealing he had met with Coppola in Cannes. "One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we've committed to Francis to do a global IMAX release."

Coppola released the first teaser trailer for Megalopolis on Monday, offering viewers a closer look at what he describes as his "best work ever."

The film follows Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), an architect who seeks to build a utopian future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who wants to stick to the status quo. The mayor's daughter, Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), is on the fence, torn between the two men and their warring views.

Coppola conceived the idea for Megalopolis nearly 50 years ago, in 1977, before he put pen to paper in 1983, but the picture has faced numerous delays and setbacks since. In 2023, halfway through shooting, reports surfaced about issues brewing on set due to a crew exodus and the $120 million self-financed budget ballooning.

A more recent report added to the fraught production by detailing one of several accusations leveled at Coppola about his behavior on the set, with several sources claiming that he pulled women onto his lap during the filming days (though an executive co-producer of Megalopolis defended the director in a statement to IGN).

Megalopolis is one of 22 films competing for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it will have its world premiere on May 17.

Fallout's Ella Purnell to Star in Killer Squirrel Horror-Comedy The Scurry

16 mai 2024 à 13:25

Fallout star Ella Purnell has landed the lead role in The Scurry, a new horror-comedy about a savage band of killer squirrels.

Fresh from fighting feral ghouls and gigantic gulpers in Prime Video's hit series Fallout, Purnell has a new threat to contend with: Slayer squirrels. That's because she has joined the cast of Craig Roberts' comedy-horror The Scurry, playing "a park attendant who must use her unique skills and strength to survive," per Screen Daily.

Purnell joins previously announced cast members Rhys Ifans, Paapa Essiedu, and Antonia Thomas. Olivia Cooke and Mia McKenna-Bruce were previously attached to the project but have now pulled out due to scheduling conflicts with the production, as cameras are currently rolling on the squirrel-infested flick in the UK.

"Fallout is the biggest show on the planet right now, so to have the lead actress join our squirrel movie is incredibly exciting for the production team and our worldwide distribution partners," said executive producer James Scott.

Before Fallout, Purnell was perhaps best known for the role of Jackie in the hit TV show Yellowjackets but also had a memorable turn in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. She voiced Jinx in the League of Legends series Arcane and appeared alongside Dave Bautista in Zack Snyder's zombie movie Army of the Dead.

The Scurry will offer her a complete change of scene as the screenplay for the movie, written by Tim Telling, follows "two pest controllers called to a country park café to investigate a routine vermin problem, only for an avalanche of deranged squirrels to descend at nightfall, wreaking mayhem on the staff and visitors in the park."

The Scurry does not yet have a release date, but there are a bunch of horror movies on Netflix to keep you busy in the meantime.

The Fantastic Four Star Paul Walter Hauser Teases Mystery Role, Prompting Speculation From Fans

15 mai 2024 à 18:52

Paul Walter Hauser has confirmed that his mystery role in The Fantastic Four is a character from Marvel Comics, and fans think they have already figured out who he is playing.

A report from Deadline earlier this month revealed Hauser had joined the cast of The Fantastic Four, but details were under wraps. The actor has now broken his silence on his secret MCU role and let slip he is playing an established character from the comics, saying he is "excited" to bring them to life on the screen.

"It's a very distinct character that I'm excited to play.

"All I can say is that I, in some iteration, am in the movie The Fantastic Four until I get fired or recast," Hauser told Screen Rant in a recent interview. "So I can't say anything about the character I'm playing but know that it is in the sort of lexicon and mythology of The Fantastic Four stories. And it's a very distinct character that I'm excited to play, and I'm kind of mapping out what I'm doing with that right now."

Hauser hasn't given away too many clues about who he is portraying at this early stage, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating. People immediately took to X/Twitter to share their suggestions, and one recurring name came up: Mole Man.

— Doctor Doom (@DoctorrDoom) May 14, 2024

Fingers crossed he plays either Mole Man or HERBIE pic.twitter.com/ppzh5e6BOX

— Milkias Samuel (@milkias_samuel) May 14, 2024

My guess is he’s playing mole man as an appetizer villain at the beginning of the movie to showcase who the fantastic 4 are.

— The Guy (@BlackRomba) May 14, 2024

He’s Mole man. I wonder if that means John Malkovich is Herbie or Franklin Storm. I would say Puppet master but we would need Alicia Masters for that story to be impactful.

— Colby_R (@Colfern326) May 14, 2024

Mole Man. I'm 80% sure about that. He was born for this role.😀 pic.twitter.com/PolcdORHO9

— H.H.Harcoy / Harcoy Harcoy Harcoy (@HHarcoy) May 15, 2024

I think he will be interesting for the part.. pic.twitter.com/Fd2iyJVZf9

— Liberty Forever (@Love4MyLiberty) May 14, 2024

Harvey Elder, aka the Mole Man, isn't just one of the Fantastic Four's most recurring villains; he is also their first, making his debut in the landmark Fantastic Four #1 comic issue by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He is just one of many colorful rogues that could show up to confront Marvel's First Family in Matt Shakman's upcoming film.

If Hauser is taking on the Mole Man persona, that shatters David Krumholtz's hopes of starring in the role. The actor previously shared a plea for the part online, writing, "I mean, it's a shoe-in for Mole Man, isn't it? But I don't know. I'll do anything Marvel tells me to. I'll probably end up playing like a superhero's therapist."

Hauser joins a stacked cast that includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. Ralph Ineson will play Galactus, and John Malkovich is in a mystery role, while Julia Garner will reportedly star as the Silver Surfer.

The Fantastic Four will hit theaters on July 25, 2025. That means we have three MCU movies — Deadpool and Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts — to watch before that date arrives, along with a few Disney+ shows.

Netflix's Terminator Zero Anime Series Gets Premiere Date and First-Look Images

15 mai 2024 à 16:00

Netflix has released a set of first-look images for its Terminator Zero anime series ahead of its premiere on August 29.

Created and executive produced by Mattson Tomlin and executive produced by Skydance and animation studio Production I.G, Terminator Zero will drop all eight episodes at once on Thursday, August 29, introducing audiences to a new group of characters, some of whom appear in the first-look images for the sci-fi series.

Instead of John or Sarah Connor, viewers will get to know a forward-thinking scientist called Malcolm Lee, who, according to the official synopsis for the show, "works to launch a new A.I. system designed to compete with Skynet's impending attack on humanity" but also must navigate "the moral complexities of his creation."

Caught between the year 2022, where "a future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines," and 1997, where "the A.I. known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity," is a brave soldier who will travel back in time to protect Lee from potential danger.

It sounds like Lee will need all the help he can get as he finds himself being "hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future, which forever alters the fate of his three children." That assassin is undoubtedly a Terminator, as one of the images shows a suited figure with a torn face that reveals the ominous red eye of a cyborg.

The first teaser for Terminator Zero didn't reveal any footage of the series, so these images offer our best look yet at the anime ahead of its Netflix debut. It is the latest addition to the franchise that launched in 1984 with the original Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and spawned five more movies, plus a spin-off TV series.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Gets Premiere Date and Star-Studded First Trailer

15 mai 2024 à 13:27

Only Murders in the Building has dropped its first teaser for Season 4 and set its premiere date for August.

The trailer for Only Murders in the Building's "starriest season yet" was unveiled during Disney's upfront presentation, confirming the hit-comedy drama will debut its highly-anticipated fourth season on Hulu and Disney+ on August 27, with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez returning for more sleuthing shenanigans.

This time, however, the true-crime trio are packing their bags and heading to Hollywood, where there will be lights, cameras, and plenty of action.

"Our amateur podcasting trio wrestles with the shocking events at the end of season three surrounding Charles; stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki," reads the official logline for Season 4. "Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. As Charles, Oliver & Mabel race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building's courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia's West Tower residents."

Season four will see Meryl Streep return as Loretta, Michael Cyril Creighton back as Howard, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph reprising her role as Detective Dee Williams. They will join special guest stars Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy, Richard Kind, and more.

Only Murders in the Building hails from co-creators and writers Steve Martin and John Hoffman, who executive produce along with Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal. The hit series received a renewal for Season 4 on the same day as the Season 3 finale, which left things on a cliffhanger.

Season 3 garnered generally favourable reviews, but IGN felt it had "lost sight of what made the first two seasons of the true-crime spoof so compelling" by not spending enough time "on solving the mystery at the center" of the whodunit. The finale aired on October 3, leaving Season 4 to pick up the pieces on August 27.

Road House Sequel Led by Jake Gyllenhaal in the Works at Amazon MGM Studios

14 mai 2024 à 18:03

A sequel to Amazon's Road House remake is in the works, with Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role as Dalton.

Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke announced the news during the studio's inaugural upfronts presentation on May 14, confirming that Gyllenhaal would be back to pack another punch as Elwood Dalton in a sequel to 2024's Road House (a remake of the 1989 film of the same name led by the late Patrick Swayze).

With nearly 80 million viewers to date, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Elwood Dalton in a Road House sequel. pic.twitter.com/XgpD3ScXIS

— Prime Video (@PrimeVideo) May 14, 2024

Plot details are under wraps for now, but the first film saw Dalton, a former UFC fighter, take a job at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, where he soon discovered things were not as they first seemed. Gyllenhaal was joined on the cast by Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, and Conor McGregor, starring in his feature film debut.

The movie was popular with audiences, pulling in nearly 80 million global viewers since its March 21 debut on Prime Video. Over 50 million people watched it during its first two weekends on the platform, making it Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis, the studio has revealed.

Before going to streaming, Road House premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, but director Doug Liman opted to boycott the screening in protest of Amazon MGM refusing to give the movie a theatrical release. He stressed that "if we don't put tentpole movies in movie theaters, there won't be movie theaters in the future."

IGN attended the event and gave the movie a 6/10, noting that "the original's bouncer-versus-businessman plot is refashioned and almost given some thematic weight," but the remake ends up trading "'80s earnest silliness with a Saturday-morning-cartoon tone that manages – barely – to overcome its flaws."

Dune: Prophecy Casts Renowned Indian Actress Tabu as Sister Francesca

14 mai 2024 à 17:01

Dune: Prophecy, the Bene Gesserit origin series in the works at Max, has cast renowned Indian actress Tabu in a recurring role.

According to Variety, Tabu will play a character called Sister Francesca, described as "strong, intelligent, and alluring" and someone who "leaves a lasting impression in her wake." The outlet further notes that she was "once a great love of the Emperor," so "her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital."

Tabu is one of India's most revered actresses, having won numerous awards for her roles in mainstream and independent movies. She expanded into American cinema with The Namesake, her first Hollywood movie, in 2006, followed by Life of Pi in 2012. She also featured on the cast of the BBC mini-series A Suitable Boy.

Along with Tabu, the cast for Dune: Prophecy, formerly known as Dune: The Sisterhood, includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, and Shalom Brune-Franklin.

Based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune, the upcoming series takes place 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and, per the official logline, follows "two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit."

Dune: Prophecy underwent "creative changes" in March 2023 while also losing its director along with one of its stars. However, the series has since got back on track and is now expected to premiere on the Max streaming service later this year, while Dune: Part 2 makes its streaming debut on Max on May 21.

Megalopolis Trailer Offers a Closer Look at Francis Ford Coppola's 'Best Work Ever'

14 mai 2024 à 14:17

The first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis is here, offering viewers a closer look at the filmmaker's "best work ever."

The time-stopping teaser pulls back the curtain on the Roman epic fable set in an imagined Modern America following a devastating disaster. It cycles through a carousel of clips showing powerful scenes of destruction and decay as the city crumbles, contrasted with the ornate decadent displays of a fantasy future.

"Our new film Megalopolis is the best work I've ever had the privilege to preside over," reads a quote in the description box of the trailer, posted on the official Francis Ford Coppola YouTube account.

According to the official synopsis, "The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor's daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves."

Joining those three key players on the cast are Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, Dustin Hoffman, and Laurence Fishburne, whose voice is heard at the start of the trailer, asking, "When does an empire die?"

Coppola began writing Megalopolis in 1983, but the picture has faced numerous delays and setbacks in the decades since. Cameras eventually started rolling in 2022, but halfway through shooting, reports surfaced about issues brewing on set due to a crew exodus and the $120 million self-financed budget ballooning.

The film did, however, make it across the finish line and will finally have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17.

Jon Watts' Advice About Spider-Man Practical Effects Gets Some Pushback From Fans

13 mai 2024 à 19:29

Jon Watts, the director behind the most recent Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland, has received some pushback from fans over his advice to not rely on practical effects for web-swinging scenes.

Collider caught up with Watts at CCXP and asked him if he had any insights for his Spidey successor, pulling from his experience on 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, and 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. The one nugget he offered up was not to "waste" time on practical wire work.

It doesn't look good when someone is just swinging on a rope.

"I have a very practical bit of Spider-Man advice, and I think every Spider-Man director goes through it. It doesn't look good when someone is just swinging on a rope," he said. "You think you're gonna go in there, you're like, 'we're gonna do it all practical. We're gonna get a stuntman. We're gonna be swinging around.' It's boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don't waste your time. That's my advice to the next Spider-Man director."

These comments caused a stir on social media, with people openly rebuking Watts' opinion by sharing behind-the-scenes videos of the stunt work on past Spidey entries and praising the outcome. Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man films frequently came up in the conversation as a positive example of practical effects.

It’s crazy how he says doing it all practical it’s boring and looks dumb but Marc Webb pulled it off don’t believe me check down below 👇🏽 pic.twitter.com/d8A8GXxnWs

Here a video of the practical affects within Amazing Spider-Man movie that was made by possible by Marc Webb: pic.twitter.com/bgGuEq7DRS

— Ayman (@GuyWhoConquers) May 12, 2024

Amazing Spider-Man 1 says otherwise

— Drek (@drek77107) May 12, 2024

The Amazing Spider Man literally had practical swinging and it looked amazing even now

— Victory Reviews 🇵🇷 🇲🇽 (@Victory_Reviews) May 12, 2024

Web-swinging was the one thing that lacked in the Home trilogy. Would’ve loved to see some more.

— Clark (@H3LIXSURGE) May 12, 2024

I mean.. I loved Jon watts trilogy. Prob my favourite series of the spider-men ones. But his swinging was prob the worst

— y_akh775 (@YoshuaA13) May 12, 2024

His movies were good... But they had the worst swinging and action of all the spidey movies. The amazing spider man movies, for as bad as they were, were miles ahead of Holland's movies in that aspect.

— Steven. (@glasshalf_full_) May 12, 2024

If you want swinging advice they should ask marc Webb or Sam raimi

— meatrub strikes again! (@meatrub1290) May 12, 2024

While the majority seemed to disagree with Watts on taking the CGI route with Spider-Man's web-swinging, a few thought the filmmaker might have a point. One person argued that live-action swinging can end up looking "awkward and slow" because it's something that "just can't really be done properly practically."

Someone else on X/Twitter suggested that "the proof is in the pudding" because "every sequence someone shares as 'the best swinging ever' is a CGI sequence that doesn't look like someone just swinging on a rope."

"Everyone's cooking Watts but he literally very much in the right here," another person added, throwing their opinion in the mix. "You wouldn't be able to get grand swinging sequences where cameras fly through the city following someone who has incredible agility and flexibility... in real life. You just won't. Watts gave great advice."

One thing that debaters can't rebuff is the enormous success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It grossed over $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office and set several records along the way, but Watts has since said he "needs a break from the superhero realm," leaving the door open for another filmmaker to take the reins.

Holland, who has donned the Spidey suit for three standalone movies and a handful of other MCU appearances, said in April that he will "always want to do more" Spider-Man films and confirmed that work is still underway on the story for the fourth installment, noting that everyone involved has "a legacy to protect."

It will likely be a while before we hear any news about the fourth film since Marvel is working through a full slate of movies and shows for the MCU's Phase 5 and Phase 6.

Giamatti will also be rubbing shoulders with this group once more as he reprises his role as Cora Grantham's brother, Harold Levinson, alongside Dominic West, who is returning as Guy Dexter. They also join several newcomers to the cast, including Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan.

The Downton Abbey franchise launched in 2010 when the first series aired in the UK. It has spawned six seasons (available to stream on Netflix) and two feature films — one released in 2019 as a continuation of the series and a sequel that arrived in theaters in 2022 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.

IGN's review of Downton Abbey: A New Era called it a "good" addition to the franchise but warned audiences that it "starts out as a wistful return to the familiar before shedding its skin," going from "funny and charming to jaw-droppingly grim at the drop of a hat — a wild tonal whiplash that's absolutely worth a watch."

Fellowes joined Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge on the producing team for that film, and the same trio will be back for the newly announced third installment.

Boardwalk Empire Actor Steve Buscemi Punched in the Face on New York City Street

13 mai 2024 à 15:15

Steve Buscemi, the actor who previously starred in HBO's Boardwalk Empire, was punched in the face in a random attack in Manhattan last week.

As reported by The New York Times, the assault occurred on the morning of Wednesday, May 8, while the 66-year-old actor was out walking near the corner of Third Avenue and East 27th Street in the Kips Bay neighborhood of New York City. He was taken to a nearby hospital with bruising, swelling, and bleeding to his left eye.

"He is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to [him] while also walking the streets of New York.

"Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Midtown Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city," Buscemi's publicist said in a statement shared with the public on May 12. "He is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to [him] while also walking the streets of New York."

The New York Police Department has confirmed there have been no arrests related to the attack, and investigations are continuing.

The attack on Buscemi follows a similar incident in April with his Boardwalk Empire co-star Michael Stuhlbarg, who was hit in the back of the neck with a rock while walking in Manhattan's Central Park. Stuhlbarg chased the assailant out of the park, where police apprehended him and later charged him with assault.

Fellow actor Michael Rapaport joined several others in speaking out about these attacks. "Steve is the salt of the earth," he wrote on X/Twitter shortly after news of Buscemi's assault came to light. "A former firefighter who worked onsite 9/11, great artist, and easily one of the kindest and most generous people you could meet."

Buscemi served as a New York City firefighter in the early '80s before pursuing an acting career. He has starred in several movies, including Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, and The Big Lebowski. He also played Enoch "Nucky" Thompson in Boardwalk Empire, Anthony "Tony B" Blundetto on The Sopranos, and will star on Wednesday Season 2.

Jerry Seinfeld Apologizes for 'Sexual Undertones' in Bee Movie, but Says He 'Would Not Change It'

13 mai 2024 à 13:19

Jerry Seinfeld jokingly apologized for the "sexual undertones" in 2007's Bee Movie while giving a commencement speech at Duke University.

The comedian caused quite a buzz with his speech at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, as he acknowledged the controversy that swarms his 2007 animated family comedy Bee Movie. He admitted there may have been some "sexual undertones" in the film, but on reflection, he would not alter it.

"I may not have calibrated that perfectly, but I would not change it.

"I made a cartoon movie about bees you may have watched as a child," Seinfeld said during his speech, which was uploaded to YouTube (11:59). "If any of you felt slightly uncomfortable about the sexual undertones in the relationship between Barry the bee and Vanessa, the florist who saves his life, I would like to apologize for that now.

"I may not have calibrated that perfectly, but I would not change it," he continued as he stressed the importance of humor to the crowd of graduating seniors. "The slightly uncomfortable feeling of awkward humor is OK. It's not something you need to fix... Not a lot of life makes sense for you to be able to survive it without humor."

Bee Movie received mixed reviews from critics and pulled in disappointing numbers at the box office when it hit theaters in 2007. However, social media reactions have taken some of the sting out of its initial reception as people have continued to joke about the relationship between Barry, the bee, and Vanessa, a human character.

Seinfeld referenced this discourse during an appearance on The Tonight Show in 2021, telling Jimmy Fallon that the movie's romantic undertones were not a deliberate addition to the script. He said he only realized afterwards that the DreamWorks Animation film was "not appropriate for children" despite being its target audience.

"I apologize for what seems to be a certain uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect of the Bee Movie," he said. "[It] really was not intentional, but after it came out, I realized this is really not appropriate for children. Because the bee seems to have a thing for the girl, and we don't really want to pursue that as an idea in children’s entertainment."

Bee Movie was up for Best Animated Feature Film at the 65th Golden Globe Awards but lost out to Disney Pixar Animation's Ratatouille.
