Walmart Has One of the Best Budget TV Deals I've Seen This Year: Get a 58" Hisense 4K TV for Just $218

23 juillet 2025 à 19:10

For all you budget TV shoppers, Walmart has just released an excellent deal on a sizeable TV. Right now you can pick up a 58" Hisense R6-series 4K Roku Smart TV for just $214 with free delivery. That's pretty much Black Friday tier pricing. If you're looking for a a high-end TV with fancy features like 120Hz or HDMI 2.1, then you've come to the wrong place. If you're looking for an inexpensive TV that offers the best bang for your buck, then this deal can't be beat.

58" Hisense R6 4K Roku TV for $214

The entry-level Hisense R6-series 4K smart TV offers a standard set of features in exchange for a rock bottom price. What you're getting is a native 4K TV that offers solid image quality with full array LED backlighting, Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 support, and motion rate 120Hz (60Hz native) technologies that should satisfy most TV watchers. It has built-in speakers, three HDMI inputs for hooking up your gaming console or soundbar speaker, and Roku, which is actually favorite streaming hub. This TV is basically ready to go right out of the box.

The Hisense R6 Pairs Well With the Nintendo Switch 2

The Hisense R6 is actually a great choice to pair with the Switch 2. When in docked mode, the new Switch 2 is able to run games at 4K resolution, however only at a maximum of 60fps. That means any new TV with 120Hz refresh rate will only be wasted on the Switch. Unless you also play on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X or you're looking for other features, you may be better off saving your money and getting the Hisense R6, which supports 4K at 60Hz refresh rate.

The Best Legendary Vehicles To Use As Your MTG Commander After Edge of Eternities

23 juillet 2025 à 19:00

Edge of Eternities kicks off this week (in prerelease at least), and while it’s yet another Magic: The Gathering set, it’s also shaking things up in the most popular format: Commander.

With the new set, Legendary vehicles (and the Spacecraft within Edge of Eternities) will be able to be used as your Commander, meaning there are almost two dozen Legendary Vehicles you can opt to lead your deck.

Here are the ones you should consider, along with some key points to keep in mind.

The Seriema

Wizards revealed The Seriema first when showing off Edge of Eternities cards, and it’s perhaps unsurprising as it looks like a pretty potent card for White decks.

The Seriema can find a legendary creature and put it in your hand each time it arrives, but it can give tapped legendary creatures you control Indestructible. It costs 7 to Station and is a 5/5 in its own right (with Flying).

Esika’s Chariot

One for the cat lovers, Esika’s Chariot is a four-cost 4/4 that requires 4 to Crew, but can create tokens when it arrives, and then copy additional tokens.

Tie it in with Doubling Season and your go-wide strategy can be, uh, wider than ever, creating four tokens when it enters, and then duplicating more when it attacks. More kitties, more chaos.

Entropic Battlecruiser

Oh boy, where to start? Stick a single creature in the Entropic Battlecruiser and your foes will be pinged for 3 life when discarding, but keep ramping up the Station and you’ll give it a huge health pool, flying, deathtouch, and force discards all around the table.

Will your opponents take it out before it gets there? Potentially, but we reckon it’s worth it for those people who love to mess with their opponents’ hands.

Exploration Broodship

If you’ve been looking for a fresh Landfall Commander, this could be it. The Exploration Broodship costs a single green mana, and it doesn’t take long to Station 3 and allow for bonus land each turn.

You can then sacrifice that land to bring back some big, powerful cards from your graveyard. It’s found in the World Shaper Commander Deck, if you’re picking that one up.

RMS Titanic

As soon as the rules change was announced, the RMS Titanic from the Doctor Who set saw a lot of love, and it’s understandable for what could be a pretty fun (if not entirely functional) Commander.

It’s a 7/1 with a relatively low crew cost, and only costs four mana to bring into play. It’ll also act as a Treasure token engine, has flying and trample. We’d imagine the play here will be buffing it as much as possible to then make a whole host of tokens, which you can then use to bring it back into play with the Commander tax.

The Last Ride

Another one that could be great fun as a literal last-hurrah, this one-mana black Legendary Vehicle from Aetherdrift (that set feels a while ago, right?) could have meme potential.

The Last Ride is strongest the closer you are to death, and being able to roll it out from your Command zone to hit an opponent for big numbers is the kind of chaos we’re here for.

The Indomitable

Fancy building a Pirate deck? Here’s your ideal ghost ship to set sail with. The Indomitable is a 6/6, four-cost Legendary Artifact with Trample and card draw.

It also crews with three, but the real bonus is you can pull it from the graveyard if you have enough pirates attacking. Doing so lets you dodge that Commander tax and bring in those card draw opportunities.

Jackdaw

More pirates? Sure, Assassin’s Creed fans, we’ve got you. The Jackdaw is a 4/4 with Crew 3 and a 3 mana cost, meaning it’s pretty easy to get up and running.

It then gives you the option of discarding your hand and redrawing based on artifact numbers, meaning you can slot it into an Artifact-focused deck and get some obscene card draw.

Weatherlight Compleated

If you’re really keen on a colorless deck (you Eldrazi sickos, we see you), then the Weatherlight Compleated is well worth a look. A 5/5 with flying that costs two colorless is nifty in itself, but it also draws when cards die.

It doesn’t ‘Crew’ in the traditional sense, but if you’re throwing a few tokens at a foe you could power it up (and draw/scry) pretty swiftly.

Lumen-Class Frigate

A new Edge of Eternities option, the Lumen-Class Frigate has a pair of Station abilities. The first lets you power up your creatures, making it easier to hit the second.

It could be particularly fun with the Tidus deck from the Final Fantasy set as you swap your counters around to get a flying, lifelink spaceship powered up in various ways.

What to Consider When Picking Your Commander

As with any Commander, picking a Legendary Vehicle that works into your desired playstyle is important, but many of the vehicles available are colorless.

Since you can only pick cards within your Commander’s color identity for your deck, that means you’d be limited to colorless cards if you opted for one of those. That may suit you just fine, but it’s worth mentioning.

Magic: The Gathering’s Spacecraft explained

Spacecraft make their debut in Edge of Eternities as a new Artifact Subtype. The idea is that your ship uses its ‘Station’ ability to pick up crew. Once you reach the required number of charge counters (calculated from the power of the cards you use to ‘Station’), your ship becomes an Artifact Creature.

The Wurmwall Sweeper, for example, needs to be crewed by four or more, so using ‘Station’ to put a couple of 2/2s in there would work nicely.

Wizards puts it best in its mechanics blog: “If Wurmwall Sweeper has three charge counters on it, it's not a creature and it doesn't have flying. Once it gets its fourth charge counter, it becomes a 2/2 artifact creature with flying.”

The Best Hulu Deals and Bundles Right Now (July 2025)

23 juillet 2025 à 18:59

Hulu has been around for a while and, for our money, it's one of the absolute best streaming services available. From great movies like Anora and Predator: Killer of Killers to excellent television series like Shogun, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Bear (check out our glowing review of season four here), there is always something awesome to watch. We've also got the highly-anticipated Alien: Earth series on our radar this year, which premieres its first two episodes on August 12.

Below, we've detailed all of the best Hulu deals and bundles so you can get started on your streaming adventures with its library right away. This includes the Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max streaming bundle, which starts at just $16.99/month and is currently the best value available for the streaming services. To see even more streaming deals, make sure to check out our roundups of the best Disney Plus deals and the best HBO Max deals.

How to Get The Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max Streaming Bundle

The Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max streaming bundle can be purchased on any of the three streaming services and starts at $16.99/month for the ad-supported tier or $29.99/month for ad-free access across all three platforms. If you're looking to cut down on streaming costs and currently own all three of these, this is an excellent bundle to invest in. It'll save you quite a bit compared to what you'd pay for the three of them separately per month - 43% on the ad-supported plan and 42% on the ad-free plan.

Hulu deal for students — Get Hulu (With Ads) for just $1.99/month

If you're a student enrolled in a university (a US Title IV accredited college or university, per Hulu's website), you can sign up for Hulu (With Ads) for $1.99 a month. That's an excellent deal that saves you $8 on the usual monthly price.

Hulu subscription tiers

Hulu is available in a couple of different tiers. The least expensive option is the ad-supported tier, which comes in at $9.99/month. This gives you access to everything exclusive, tons of movies, Hulu Originals, children's programming, and more. If you want to ditch the ads, the ad-free plan is $18.99/month.

Hulu: Bundle to Best

If you want a more affordable option when it comes to a Hulu subscription, you can't go wrong with a bundle, and Hulu has several to choose from:

  • Hulu + Live TV (With Ads) Hulu + Live TV (With Ads) is $82.99/month and includes Disney+ and ESPN+. It also gives you access to more than 75 channels with live TV and unlimited DVR functionality. The Hulu + Live TV plan also has a three-day free trial to test out the service.
  • Hulu + Live TV (Ad-Free) The ad-free version of Hulu+Live TV is $95.99/month and comes with ad-free versions of Hulu and Disney Plus, although ESPN still shows ads.
  • Disney+, Hulu Bundle Basic This is the most economic bundle. It will set you back $10.99/month and comes with subscriptions to Disney+ and Hulu. It lets you stream on multiple devices at once and comes with ad-supported versions of both Disney+ and Hulu.
  • Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ Bundle Basic This bundle adds ESPN+ (with ads) into the mix alongside ad-supported versions of Disney+ and Hulu, bumping up the price to $16.99/month. You can also download and watch select content on ESPN+ at this level.
  • Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ Bundle Premium — This bundle is $26.99/month and comes with ESPN+ (with ads) and ad-free versions of Disney+ and Hulu. You can also download select content across all three streaming services.

What can you watch on Hulu?

There is a bonkers amount of shows and movies you can watch on Hulu. Let's start at the top and simply talk about the verticals on offer with the base subscription, because if we also talk about what is available via Disney+, ESPN+, or live TV, we'll be here forever. (You can also sync up Hulu with HBO Max to gain access to things like The Last of Us and House of the Dragon.)

Here's what you get:

  • Network and Hulu Original television shows (AMC, Adult Swim, ABC, A&E, FX, etc.)
  • Movies (HBO, Hulu Originals, anime films, etc.)
  • Sports (NHL, Soccer, MLB, Auto Racing, NFL, College Football, PGA, Tennis, etc.)
  • News (ABC News Live, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, 20/20, The View, etc.)

Hulu television

Hulu has some amazing shows, both those that are finished and many which are ongoing. For comedy, there are plenty of options to choose from, including New Girl, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, What We Do In The Shadows, Modern Family, Cougar Town, Broad City, Abbott Elementary, and so much more.

There are also some big Hulu originals to watch, including The Bear, The Old Man, The Handmaid's Tale, and Only Murders In The Building. With an FX partnership, Hulu is also home to those shows, including Shogun and the upcoming Alien: Earth series.

As far as animated fare, there are modern adult classics like Rick and Morty and Bob's Burgers, as well as Futurama, Family Guy, and King of the Hill. Anime staples like Cowboy Bebop are also available. And if you want to bring more youth-friendly fun, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Curious George are just a small sample of what Hulu has available.

The future of Hulu

Hulu isn't going anywhere. Beyond it being awarded the best streaming service by us, it also received a 9/10 in our updated Hulu review. Writer Rosie Knight said, "Hulu's ease of use, solid UI, and ever- expanding catalog has moved it ahead of top competitor Netflix to secure our highest score for a streaming service."

Battlefield 6 Campaign Teaser Shows NATO Under Attack, and Includes the Return of the Series' Classic Theme

23 juillet 2025 à 18:38

Ahead of EA's full Battlefield 6 reveal tomorrow, a brief teaser for the game's campaign has been posted online, revealing a major conflict.

Set in the near future, Battlefield 6's campaign will see NATO under attack. Its base in Georgia is hit, the British territory of Gibraltar is invaded, and NATO's secretary general is assassinated inside the organisation's Brussels headquarters. The perpetrator? An organisation named Pax Armata.

A number of countries, including France, are then confirmed to have left NATO to form a new coalition, as in-universe news headlines question whether NATO itself is now a "thing of the past". Hmm...

The teaser then concludes with Battlefield's trademark theme — you know the one, that 'dun dun dun dun dun' drumbeat — and a reminder that the game's full reveal will take place tomorrow, July 24, at 8am Pacific / 4pm UK time.

Eagle-eyed viewers will spot the logo for "BF Studios" on the end of the teaser — this is the coalition of developers that EA has pulled together to work on the game, including franchise founder DICE, Los Angeles-based sister studio Ripple Effect, Montreal-based Dead Space Remake developer Motive, and British Need for Speed studio Criterion.

There's also the note that "no weapon, military vehicle or gear manufacturer is affiliated with or has sponsored or endorsed this game."

Pax Armata rises as NATO cracks. Their motto? “Our protection, your peace.”

But who’s pulling the strings and to what end?#Battlefield6 Intel drop here: https://t.co/kFnyLHbbGu pic.twitter.com/Pr2kSkIaDL

— Battlefield (@Battlefield) July 23, 2025

"Pax Armata rises as NATO cracks," a message posted on Battlefield's X / Twitter account reads. "Their motto? 'Our protection, your peace.' But who’s pulling the strings and to what end?" Presumably we'll find out more tomorrow.

In recent months, footage of Battlefield 6 from various closed playtests has started leaking online, showing the game's modern setting, various firefights, destructible environments, quality of life improvements, and the start of a battle royale match.

Battlefield 6 is currently slated to launch sometime during the current fiscal year, before March 2026. It seems likely we'll see that window narrowed considerably when the game is fully unveiled.

Why Did This Japanese Politician’s Gundam Cosplay Receive So Much Backlash?

23 juillet 2025 à 18:17

In the campaign for Japan’s recent upper house elections, Taro Yamamoto, the leader of the Reiwa Shinsengumi party released a sketch-like video in which he cosplayed as Mobile Suit Gundam character Quattro Bajeena. However, this move attracted backlash from many Japanese commenters on social media, and prompted the anime franchise’s production studio to release an official statement denying their involvement (as previously reported by Automaton).

It’s not unusual for less prominent political parties with a smaller support base to come up with eye-catching ways to attract voters (UK readers need look no further than former LibDem leader Ed Davey’s stunt campaigns). Japan’s Reiwa Shinsengumi is a smaller center-left party, led by actor-turned-politician Taro Yamamoto. With anime voice actress Maya Okamoto on the ballot slip in the June 20 upper house election, they decided to produce a sketch-like video introducing her as their candidate.

In the video, filmed in front of the giant Gundam statue at DiverCity Tokyo, Yamamoto cosplays as Quattro Bajeena, complete with bright red outfit, a blond wig and sunglasses. Quattro Bajeena appears in the 1985 series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, which was re-worked into a film trilogy in the early 2000s. In this part of the Gundam franchise, Maya Okamoto voices Emma Sheen. The video is quirky, with Yamamoto quipping to Okamoto that he is dressed normally, and introduces Okamoto’s campaign “to protect Japanese pop culture” by standing against Japan’s Qualified Invoicing System. Implemented in 2023, the invoice system has proven especially unpopular with animators, filmmakers and other freelance creatives, as it has increased the amount of tax they have to pay by around 10% (source: Japan Times).

Posted on Reiwa Shinsengumi’s official YouTube on July 18, the video got many positive responses from supporters who appreciated both its comical tone and Okamoto’s stance on protecting Japan’s pop culture. However, the video received much more backlash on the party’s official X account. Although some of the negativity appeared to be from accounts holding opposing political views, many of the critical comments disapproved of the use of Gundam for political purposes in general. And some questioned whether the party had got permission to use the characters in the first place.

This attention prompted Mobile Suit Gundam’s production company, Sunrise Studios, to make an official statement on July 22. The company, which is now part of Bandai Namco Filmworks, specified that it did not give permission for the usage and does not endorse any particular candidate.

Even neutral or approving users on X questioned Yamamoto’s choice of character to cosplay. Quattro Bajeena is the alter-ego that antihero Char Aznable takes on when he is fighting the corrupt Earth Federation alongside Gundam's main characters. However, Char is a complicated antagonist for most of the Gundam arcs in which he appears.

Spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack — at his most villianous, he even tries to drop an asteroid on Earth to create a nuclear winter. As commenters suggested, this is perhaps not the most suitable character for a politician to associate themselves with. “If he had to (cosplay as a Gundam character), it would have been better to go with Bright or Amuro,” added one commenter.

This is not the first time that Sunrise Studios have had to issue a statement about cosplaying politicians. As Japanese news site Kai-You noted, in the 2020 elections for Tokyo governor, one candidate dressed up like Lelouch from Code Geass, even appearing on election posters in cosplay. Sunrise’s statement at the time denied any involvement in or endorsement of the campaign.

Extend Your Nintendo Switch 2 Playtime with This $10 Baseus 10,00mAh Power Bank

23 juillet 2025 à 18:15

Amazon is finally offering another 10,000mAh power bank priced under $10. Right now you can pick up a Baseus 10,000mAh USB Type-C Power Bank with up to 20W of Power Delivery for only $9.99 after you clip a 50% off coupon on the product page (or apply code "9RLTN5M2"). That's a great price for a 10,000mAh power bank with USB-C output that can fast charge a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console. Baseus power banks are a reliable and usually less expensive alternative to Anker. I myself use quite a few Baseus products without any problems.

Baseus 10,000mAh USB Type-C Power Bank for $9.99

If you're looking for a good power bank to complement your Nintendo Switch, then a 10,000mAh power bank is the perfect balance between size and battery capacity. This Baseus power bank measures 6" long and 2.7" wide and weighs in at just 7 ounces. With a 10,000mAh capacity, this power bank can completely charge a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED around 1.5 to 2 times, even if you factor in approximately 80% power efficiency:

  • Nintendo Switch (16Whr) about 1.9 times
  • Steam Deck (40Whr) about 0.74 times
  • Apple iPhone 16 (14Whr) about 2.1 times
  • Apple iPhone 16 Plus (18Whr) about 1.6 times
  • Nintendo Switch 2 (20Whr) about 1.5 times

The Baseus power bank has three ports. The USB-C port serves as both output and input, the USB Type-A port is output only, and the Micro USB port is input only. The USB-C port features up to 20W of Power Delivery. Coincidentally, the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED accept a maximum charging rate of 18W, so this power bank can charge your Switch as fast as the OEM wall charger. Not only does that shorten the time it takes to charge your Switch, you'll also be able to play games while charging without draining the battery. There's no digital display, but it does feature an LED battery indicator that you can check with a press of a button.

TSA-Approved

Note that the TSA requires all power banks to be brought in carry-on bags; power banks are not allowed in check-in regardless of capacity. The Baseus power bank's 10,000mAh capacity is well below TSA's 27,000mAh carry-on limit, so it can be brought onto planes. It's also low-profile enough that no one will take notice in the first place.

Netflix Renews Wednesday For Season 3, Two Weeks Before Season 2's Premiere

23 juillet 2025 à 18:01

There’s still two solid weeks before the Netflix hit Wednesday returns for the first part of its second season — but the streamer seems to be sure of one thing: that it deserves a third. Netflix has officially renewed Wednesday for a third season before the second has even begun.

The show, which stars Jenna Ortega in the title role, originally premiered on the streamer back in November 2022 and has taken nearly three years to bring fans a second helping. But it’s clear fans are hyped up for more, as the show hit No. 1 on Netflix’s global top 10 show ranking when it debuted and stayed there for six weeks. The first season garnered over 252 million views in just 90 days and went on to hit that No. 1 spot in over 90 countries.

“It’s been a dark delight to watch Wednesday cast her spell over audiences across the globe — one deadpan quip at a time,” creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar gushed in a statement announcing the renewal.

“We’re beyond thrilled she’ll be returning to stalk the halls of Nevermore in Season 3," the pair continued. "This time, she’ll unearth more of the school’s sinister secrets — and descend even deeper into the Addams family crypt. Or, as Wednesday would say: ‘Nothing brings a family together like a good exhumation.’

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, shared similar sentiments. “The undeniable impact of Wednesday resonated immediately with fans worldwide, driving it to the top of our charts as our most popular English-language TV show, and sparking cultural trends,” the studio rep said in a statement. “We are so proud of Al Gough, Miles Millar, Tim Burton, Jenna Ortega, and the entire Wednesday cast and crew for everything they’ve accomplished. On the heels of its highly-anticipated season two return, we are thrilled to renew the iconic series for a third and to deliver more of what the fans love.”

No word on additional casting for season 3 just yet, but everything — including a release date — in good time. As for season 2, it will premiere on Netflix in two parts, with the first arriving on August 6 and the second coming on September 3.

House on Eden Review

23 juillet 2025 à 18:00

House on Eden opens in theaters Friday, July 25.

House on Eden offers a word of warning for social-media creators considering a transition to conventional movies and TV: What captures the common doomscroller's attention for a few minutes won’t captivate a paying audience for over an hour. The first feature written and directed by Canadian Internet celebrity Kris Collins (a.k.a. KallMeKris) is a found-footage horror movie about two mega-popular creators investigating a haunted house. They say write what you know, and Collins has here, to an extent: She and her co-star Celina “CelinaSpookyBoo” Myers boast tens of millions of collective followers, but those were earned by skits, reaction videos, and streams. Making a full-length movie requires an entirely different skillset (and a premise that isn’t a full decade past its sell-by date), as proven by the sluggish and instantly forgettable House on Eden.

They’re not the first creators to think they can go viral with a few bucks, a Handycam, and improvised dialogue like "Shhh, did you hear that?" House on Eden is just the latest pale imitation of The Blair Witch Project, sending fictionalized versions of Collins, Myers, and Collins' collaborator Jason-Christopher Mayer to an uninhabited home in the middle of nowhere. There, the famous TikTokers foolishly meddle with demonic forces for a few clicks, but so little happens in House on Eden that often feels like watching the discards from superior, actually scary found-footage classics.

Collins aims for the type of nauseating shaky-cam frights found in Blair Witch or Grave Encounters, but can’t replicate their slow-burn chills or intimacy. Kris, Celina, and Jay’s trip to the titular house drags on and on, and even then, it's eons before anything remotely interesting happens there. The cast ad-libs the dialogue of ghost hunters who typically “speak” to followers by typing in chat comments, which makes their interpersonal chatter flat and unnatural. Myers lets a bit about a "shit tent" go for way too long, Mayer constantly interrupts the dull blathering for another shot of empty treelines, and the model of quickfire content creation generally fails to translate into exciting or even vaguely juicy onscreen chemistry.

Speaking as an outsider looking in – I familiarized myself with Collins, Myers, and Mayer’s online work before seeing House on Eden, but I’m by no means a superfan – this is a hollow and at times obnoxious showcase of the trio’s talents. Collins and Myers have done YouTube investigations of famously haunted landmarks together, and there’s a genuine chilliness in those that’s missing here. You might recognize the blinky cat toys in House on Eden from their exploration of Gray Towers Castle, where they yield a much stronger reaction. It makes sense to try to parlay such real-world hits into a movie (after all, it’s what Sam Golbach and Colby Brock – who make a cameo in House of Eden – have done), but a rigid adherence to found-footage convention and the gang’s lackluster improv skills fails to let their winning online personalities shine through.

Even worse, House on Eden is hapless and nonsensical in its structure. Mayer and co-cinematographer Adam Myers use an arsenal of equipment including grainy film cameras and high-definition rentals, and Collins puts that gear in the hands of her characters, but the way the visuals alternate between 8mm home-movie quality and crystal-clear 4K is odd and unnecessarily distracting. The geography of the house is unclear, which makes chase scenes that already look like they're filmed in a cement mixer even harder to follow. Everywhere you turn, there’s an homage, with Collins nearly replicating scenes from Hereditary, The Witch, Kill List, and (again) Blair Witch; but as a byproduct, there’s very little that makes House on Eden stand out as its own, unique creation. Half of the runtime is an exhausting hike, lousy with "What was that?!" fakeouts. Then, a whimpering payoff tries to convince us that it was worth the inconsequential 70-ish minutes of off-camera deaths and spooky old people preceding it.

The biggest problem is that House on Eden doesn't seem to be in on its own jokes. Kris and Celina are depicted as brainrotted online clout seekers who keep brushing off certain death, but their dangerous ambition doesn't feel like commentary. The characters have zero self-preservation instincts, using investigative tools like spirit boxes to communicate with and provoke evil spirits, but these standard-issue interactions with the beyond only lead to boringly redundant and uninventive outcomes. It’s bland, by-the-books found-footage gruel that might work for less attentive or knowledgeable viewers, but feels slightly disrespectful to horror diehards.

House on Eden is hapless and nonsensical.

At best, House on Even is a fan film built from blocks stolen from better and more accomplished movies. Until its final minutes, there is no excitement. Stationary cameras are rigged all around the house, and yet they almost exclusively only record empty rooms and doors that "spookily" slam shut. Collins and Myers’ onscreen alter egos exploit self-endangerment for entertainment value, but do so without an underlying layer of wit or introspection. We've seen this before and we don't need to see it again – at least not if it’s going to be this shoddily done.

Best Xbox Accessory Deals

Outside of games, there are a few different Xbox accessory deals that are worth a look. Some of our favorite discounts right now can be found at Amazon and Woot, including on controllers, headsets, and extra storage. Have a look through our favorite deals we've come across below.

When Should I Buy an Xbox?

In general, it is advisable to keep an eye out for sales and restocks throughout the year, as Xbox Series availability has improved since the initial launch of the console. But unlike with the Nintendo Switch, we don't recommend that you wait for specific time of year to buy during a sale. Instead, it's a good idea to monitor various retailers and online platforms for restock announcements and promotional offers, which could happen at any time.

However, certain events like Black Friday or other holiday seasons may bring about unique bundles, discounts, or promotional deals specifically for the Xbox Series X. These bundles may include additional games, accessories, or exclusive limited editions. While quantities for such promotions might be limited, they can provide an opportunity to get more value for your purchase.

It's worth keeing in mind that Xbox recently increased console prices as well, which you can read more about here.

Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S?

Choosing between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S ultimately depends on your gaming preferences, budget, and specific requirements. Let's compare the two consoles to help you make an informed decision:

1. Performance: The Xbox Series X is the more powerful option, offering native 4K gaming, higher graphical fidelity, and faster loading times. It has more advanced hardware, including a larger storage capacity. On the other hand, the Xbox Series S targets a lower price point and offers a less powerful performance, targeting 1440p resolution gaming and upscaling to 4K.

2. Price: The Xbox Series S is more affordable compared to the Xbox Series X. If budget is a significant factor for you, the Xbox Series S provides a cost-effective option while still delivering a next-generation gaming experience. For example, the Series S can play Starfield at 1440p 30fps (vs 4K 30fps on Series X).

3. Storage: The Xbox Series X comes with a larger internal storage capacity, allowing you to store more games directly on the console. The Xbox Series S, however, has a smaller storage capacity, which means you may need to manage your game library more actively or rely on external storage solutions.

4. Disc Drive: The Xbox Series X includes a disc drive, enabling you to play physical game discs and enjoy a wider range of media options, including Blu-ray and DVD playback. The Xbox Series S, in contrast, is a digital-only console, meaning you can only play games downloaded from the digital store.

5. Graphics and Performance: While both consoles support ray tracing, the Xbox Series X provides a more immersive and visually impressive experience due to its superior hardware capabilities. If you prioritize cutting-edge graphics and want the best performance available, the Xbox Series X is the preferable choice.

Consider your gaming preferences, budget, and whether you prioritize top-of-the-line performance or cost-effectiveness. If you have a 4K TV, want the most powerful console, and are willing to invest more, the Xbox Series X is the recommended option. If you have a lower budget, a 1080p or 1440p TV, and don't mind sacrificing some performance, the Xbox Series S offers excellent value for money.

With how expensive gaming is getting in 2025, we're trying to save you as much money as possible on the games and other tech you actually want to buy. We've got great deal roundups available for all major platforms such as Switch and Xbox, and keep these updated frequently with brand new offers. If you're trying to keep costs down while maintaining your favorite hobby, stay tuned for more incredible discounts.

How to Watch the Predator Movies in Chronological Order

23 juillet 2025 à 17:52

Humans like to consider themselves the top of the food chain, and while that idea might work on Earth, we barely scrape by in the galactic gladiator competition. The Predator franchise, which began with the classic Scwarzenegger film in 1987, is all about the "Yautja" - towering trophy-seeking hunters from space who travel to different worlds for lethal competition and have been known to kidnap species for hunts back on their home planet.

Two initial Predator films in 1987 and 1990 created a baseline for the Predator saga. Since Xenomorphs from the Alien moves are also a cinematic scourge for humanity, it made perfect sense in the 2000's to create a shared universe with two Alien vs. Predator flicks. In the following decade, directors such as Robert Rodriquez, Shane Black, and Dan Trachtenberg all put their spins on the franchise.

With Predator: Killer of Killers now streaming and Predator: Badlands arriving later this year, it's a better time than ever to binge the original sci-fi classics. If you want to watch every Predator movie in order, we've got you covered! Below you'll find the full timeline of the Predator movies and where to watch them online.

Jump to:

You can also check out our guide to the Alien movies in order to incorporate the whole timeline.

How Many Predator Movies Are There?

There are a total of eight movies in the Predator franchise — four in the mainline series of films, two Alien crossovers, one prequel, and one anthology film. A new mainline Predator movie is set to release later in 2025.

Predator Movies in (Chronological) Order

1. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)

Killer of Killers is an anthology film featuring different iterations of Predators doing what they do best across three different timelines. The first two timelines, set in the Viking Age and Feudal Japan, take place hundreds of years before even the prequel Prey. The third timeline, however, is set after World War 2, after Prey and before the original Predator. I'd argue Killer of Killers is best enjoyed with context from the original movie, but the animated anthology can be watched at any point in a Predator marathon.

Read IGN's review of Predator: Killer of Killers

2. Prey (2022)

Prey is a prequel and therefore designed to be watched after everything else (especially Predator 2) but if one is truly looking to take in the Predator franchise in chronological order this is the place to begin. Set in 1719, across the the Great Plains, Prey follows a young Comanche woman, Naru (Amber Midthunder), who gets more than she bargains for when she accompanies her brother on a hunt and winds up in the crosshairs of a (more primitive) Predator. Determined to prove herself, Naru sets her sights on taking the alien stalker down in this fresh and thrilling take from the three-decade saga.

Read IGN's review of Prey

3. Predator (1987)

It all started with 1987's Predator, directed by Die Hard's John McTiernan and starring heyday Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, and Shane Black (who would direct his own Predator film many years later). Predator is an awesome action classic where a near-unstoppable military rescue team gets their asses handed to them by a terrifying invisible force in the jungles of South America. When the attacker is revealed to be an alien hunter out on its own version of a sinister safari, Schwarzenegger's Dutch must figure out how to ambush and defeat a monster light years ahead of him in tech and tactics.

4. Predator 2 (1990)

A few years later, Predator returned to multiplexes for more massacres and mayhem, but this time with a complete change of cast and setting. Taking place amongst a near-future heatwave/crimewave -- 1997 Los Angeles -- Predator 2 follows cops played by Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, Ruben Blades, and María Conchita Alonso as they attempt to not only deal with a bloody Cartel war on the streets, but a badass alien Predator too, stalking the cityscape for victims.

5. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)

After 14 years -- with novels, comics, and video games keeping the franchise flames lit -- Predator came back in a huge way with a full crossover movie, merging with the Alien saga, which hadn't been dormant but definitely struggled to find its footing in the '90s. Alien vs. Predator, from Resident Evil/Event Horizon's Paul W. S. Anderson, was a big hit, injecting new life into both sci-fi/horror properties. Set in "present day" America, AVP introduced a nasty bit of history connecting the Yautja and Xenomorphs. Namely that Predators had been conducting hunts on Earth for centuries using humans as breeding bodies for Xenos, and then hunting down the Xeno swarm for "right of passage" sport. Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova, and Ewen Bremner star.

Read IGN's review of AVP: Alien vs. Predator

6. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007)

The sequel to AVP, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, picks up right where AVP left off, so timeline-wise this is all the same battle. Not as successful as its predecessor (hence it being the final crossover film) Requiem delivered an Alien-Predator hybrid, known as the "Predalien," as it attacked a small Colorado town and a Predator "cleaner" being dispatched to take down this new monstrosity.

Read IGN's review of Alien vs. Predator: Requiem here.

7. Predators (2010)

The only Predator movie to not take place on Earth, Predators, from Robert Rodriguez, looked to shake up the formula a bit by bringing audiences to a distant planet, a Yautja game reserve. With a killer cast including Adrien Brody, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, and Alice Braga, Predators showed fans how humans, specifically "established killers," are abducted and used for sport between two warring Yautja tribes.

Timeline-wise, this is a tricky one. It's never clearly stated when this all happens. Meaning, the Earth year. But it's easy enough to just assume it's 2010, when the movie was released. Or, in the very least, based on the characters, the early 21st Century. So Predators can fit into your chronological viewing plans here, at number six, or you can save it for last.

Read IGN's review of Predators

8. The Predator (2018)

Despite Predators being a modest hit it would still be eight years before a new Predator film hit the big screen and with 2018's The Predator, director/co-writers Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) would take the franchise back to its original formula (which he himself starred in) by presenting a squad of unstable soldiers -- played by the likes of Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane and Game of Thrones' Alfie Allen -- who take on a pair of rampaging Predators and thwart their Yautja schemes (which involve DNA splicing). The film ends with a tease for more, while alternate/unused endings featured time traveling versions of both Alien's Ellen Ripley and Rebecca "Newt" Jorden in a new grab for crossover gold.

Read IGN's review of The Predator

How to Watch the Predator Movies by Release Date

If you're looking to watch all the movies in theatrical release order, the correct list is below:

  1. Predator (1987)
  2. Predator 2 (1990)
  3. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
  4. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007)
  5. Predators (2010)
  6. The Predator (2018)
  7. Prey (2022)
  8. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
  9. Predator: Badlands (2025)

The Future of the Predator Franchise

Predator: Badlands, in theaters November 7, 2025, will star Elle Fanning and feature Predator as the protagonist, according to director Dan Trachtenberg. The movie's first teaser appears to show Elle Fanning's character "rebooting" like a Weyland-Yutani synth, pointing to a connection with the Alien movies. The more recent official trailer suggests even more Alien references, while also showing off the surprisingly communicative Predator himself.

Deals For Today: Switch 2 Pokémon Legends Z-A Bundle and Pokemon Cards Galore

23 juillet 2025 à 17:31

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pokémon Legends Z-A bundle is finally available to preorder at $499.99, making it the first official way to lock in both the upgraded console and one of the most anticipated entries in the series. Z-A leans into real-time action and city exploration, with enhanced graphics and smoother performance on Switch 2 compared to the original console.

On the trading card side, the Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Box is now just $90.98 on Amazon, beating TCG Player’s price by over ten dollars. It’s a solid pick-up during the current sealed product craze, especially for anyone after the Team Rocket’s Wobbuffet promo.

TL;DR: Deals for Today

There’s plenty more worth checking out today. The Prismatic Evolutions Booster Bundle is ten dollars cheaper on Amazon than TCG Player, and the Journey Together Build and Battle Box is also under market, with the added benefit of free shipping.

If you're into The Empyrean series, the new edition of Fourth Wing is down to $23.09, while Iron Flame is just $13.92. Anker's 25000mAh power bank is still one of the more useful tech deals today, and for practical summer gear, the bladeless BEYYON neck fan is a great option at $17.99. Rounding things out are collector-friendly picks like the Dark Knight Trilogy Steelbook set, a glow-in-the-dark Frodo Funko for $14.99, and a reliable BOOKOO jump starter that costs less than a tank of gas.

Switch 2 + Pokémon Legends: Z-A Bundle

Launching the same time as Pokémon Legends: Z-A, this bundle knocks a cool $20 off the digital price tag of the game (digital code included). We're not at the custom limited edition console point of the Switch 2's life cycle yet, but this is a smart way to secure the system and save some money whilst doing it. Just preorder quickly - I'm amazed Best Buy still has it live.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Switch 2)

This $69.99 version of Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the Switch 1 game with the Switch 2 upgrade included. From what we've seen so far, we're talking 4K resolutions running at a buttery smooth 60 frames per second. Real-time battles, a fully explorable Lumiose City, and nighttime Z-A Royale events all benefit from the sharper visuals and faster load times. If you're already going in on a Switch 2, this is the version to get. It looks like the most technically ambitious Pokémon game yet, and Switch 2 seems to be the only way to experience it at its best.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Switch 1)

If you're not ready to upgrade to a Nintendo Switch 2 yet, the Switch 1 version still has an upgrade path so you have options down the line. Legends Z-A switches things up with real-time battles, an urban setting in Lumiose City, and the full return of Mega Evolutions, including 27 new forms like Mega Dragonite. The starter picks are a nice throwback, but what really caught my attention is the Z-A Royale system and Alpha Pokémon lurking across the city at night. Add in deep trainer customization and the Switch 2 upgrade option, and it’s clear the developers are trying to evolve more than just the Pokémon this time. If it plays as good as it sounds, this could be the next real shift for the series.

Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Box

Down to $90.98, marking nearly $25 off its market value, this is almost the best price we've seen for the Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Box (it pretty much is right now in all honesty). It's above MSRP, but good luck finding a better price during Pokémania 2025.

Prismatic Evolutions Booster Bundle

Amazon is currently $10 cheaper than TCG Player with Prismatic Evolutions Booster Bundles, but it's still way over MSRP. Like all other sealed TCG products at the moment though, they're hard to find for shelf price.

Pokemon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Journey Together Booster Build & Battle Box

Not only is Amazon over a dollar cheaper, you're saving on postage too compared to TCG Player. To break this down, you're getting four Journey Together boosters, a 30-card deck and one of four stamped promos.

Pokémon TCG Stock Update

Amazon is finally getting into the groove with Pokémon TCG Elite Trainer Box stock and pricing, and some are the closest to MSRP the big box retailer has been for weeks. Not only is the Black Bolt ETB vastly undercutting the secondary market, Paradox Rift ETB is even cheaper (and an overlooked set in my opinion, stock up now).

There's other great deals on ex boxes too, which are also near MSRP and around the same or just under listings on TCG Player. The sealed market is becoming more competitive, so it's more important than ever to give eBay a quick check before hitting buy.

Nintendo Switch 2 Stock Updates

In a shocking move, Target is selling both Nintendo Switch 2 SKUs without preorders, waiting lists or raffles, so snap them up quickly. As predicted, Nintendo Switch 2's launch window is seeing stock shortages in the US. If you didn't preorder at launch, you've probably been waiting for stock drops since launch.

Amazon currently has its invitation system in place for both the standard console SKU and the Mario Kart world bundle, so it's always worth getting on the waiting list whilst you wait. If successful, your purchase link will be live for 72 hours.

Portable Neck Fan With LED Display

At $17.99, this neck fan is cheaper than a cumbersome handheld fan and way more useful. It's lightweight, quiet, and actually hands-free, which makes it easy to wear while working, traveling, or just trying to survive another summer heatwave. The LED display is a nice bonus since you don’t have to guess how much battery life is left, and the bladeless design means no hair tangles. Five speed settings and up to 15 hours of runtime for under twenty bucks? That’s a win.

Fourth Wing (Wing and Claw Collection) (The Empyrean, 1)

If you're collecting The Empyrean series, this new edition of Fourth Wing is worth a look. It’s down to $23.09 right now, and the updated hardcover comes with stenciled edges to match Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, which should appeal to anyone trying to keep their shelf setup clean and consistent. This is a limited first print run for the U.S. and Canada, so it’s a good chance to own a unique version of your future favorite book series for a steal.

Iron Flame (Standard Edition) (The Empyrean, 2)

If you're already deep into Fourth Wing, grabbing Iron Flame for $13.92 is a no-brainer, especially with the list price pushing $30. The narration from Rebecca Soler adds a solid layer to the story, and this sequel dives straight into the brutality and politics of Basgiath without slowing down. Things are darker, the stakes are higher, and Violet’s got even more to lose. It’s long, intense, and exactly what fans of the first book are probably hoping for.

Anker Laptop Power Bank, 25,000mAh

The 25,000mAh capacity on this bad boy is enough to charge a laptop and a few other devices on the go, with the triple 100W USB-C ports make it way more versatile than your average power bank. The built-in cables are a smart touch, especially for travel or work setups where digging for the right cord gets old fast.

The Dark Knight Trilogy - Amazon Exclusive

At $129.99, this trilogy set is definitely on the premium end, but it’s one of the few collections that actually justifies the price. You’re getting all three Dark Knight films in 4K with HDR, plus Blu-rays and digital copies, all packed in exclusive Steelbook cases that are made for collectors. Nolan’s trilogy still holds up as some of the best superhero filmmaking, and if you're going to own it this is the version to get.

Funko Pop! Plus: The Lord of The Rings - Frodo Baggins

At $14.99, this Frodo Pop is a nice pickup if you're into Lord of the Rings or building out a Funko display. It’s the glow-in-the-dark version, and Funkos usually hold up well over time on a shelf or desk (especially boxed). For the price, it’s a low-effort way to round out a collection or grab a gift that doesn’t feel like a cop out.

BOOKOO Jump Starter 2000A

For under $35, this jump starter is a solid backup to keep in the car, especially with how often batteries can die without warning. It’s rated for larger engines, works in extreme temperatures, and includes extras like USB ports, a flashlight, and a hard case for storage. Most jump starters at this price don’t offer that kind of flexibility or power.

TAMASHII NATIONS - X-Men - Cyclops (GAMERVERSE)

Cyclops GAMERVERSE S.H.Figuarts figure from Tamashii Nations is now up for preorder at Amazon for $100, and it's packed with the kind of articulation and premium detail the line is known for. You’ll get three interchangeable optic blast effects, from a subtle glow to full-blown superblast, plus multiple visors, facial expressions, and hand options to fully recreate your favorite poses. It even includes a special mount for background displays.

Small Soldiers 4K UHD Steelbook + Digital

Joe Dante’s Small Soldiers is back with a bang in this new 4K UHD Steelbook edition, now just $25.99 (down from $30.99) on Amazon. Combining the mischief of Gremlins with the firepower of G.I. Joe, this cult classic delivers practical effects chaos and ‘90s nostalgia in equal measure. Featuring Gregory Smith, Kirsten Dunst, and the late Phil Hartman in his final film role, the Steelbook includes a crisp remaster and digital copy.

Serenity (2005) - 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook 4K

Firefly fans, this is the definitive edition you’ve been waiting for. The 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook of Serenity is now available for $29.96 (down from $34.99) and includes 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital formats and a massive lineup of bonus content. Directed by Joss Whedon and starring Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Summer Glau.

Compressed Air Duster: 100000RPM

RELIDOL Compressed Air Duster is a powerful, eco-friendly cleaning tool that’s up to 44% off today at just $27.99 (regularly $49.99). With a blazing-fast 100,000RPM motor and three adjustable airflow modes, it clears dust, crumbs, and debris from keyboards, PC towers, car interiors, and more in seconds. The built-in LED light helps you spot hidden grime, while the rechargeable 7500mAh battery offers up to 40 minutes of cordless runtime.

The Legend of Zelda Hardcover Book Sale

Nearly every The Legend of Zelda hardcover book you need for your collection is available in this sale with some cracking discounts. It includes my favorite one, Hyrule Historia, that fills in more than a few gaps in the LoZ lore, although the timeline has already been slightly retconned. It also includes full and expanded official guides for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

KRK Kreate Powered Studio Monitors

I can personally guarantee a set of powered studio monitors will sound better than almost any sound system with or without a subwoofer. The new line of KRK Kreate studio monitors aren't just for recording music (Although they'd do an amazing job), they're a versatile sound option for content creation, editing, gaming, watching TV and movies and more. Buyers can even teather to them via Bluetooth for no fuss connections.

I've been using the 8-inch speaker models for a couple of weeks now, and they destroy my soundbar and subwoofer combo that costs nearly double the price. There's precision adjustments knobs on the back, which I keep mostly in neutral with volume up by half for a crisp flat sound with the right amount of bass. Although that can be cranked up when needed.

Personally, I use an audio splitter so my Krate 8s can handle my Nano QuadCortex guitar amp moddler, my TV audio and gaming PC audio for the best experience. For me, going from a 3-inch to 8-inch speaker option is night and day. The clarity difference and range is top-tier, not to mention the jack, XLR and aux outputs available on each monitor that fits in perfectly in everyone's setup. You're getting top-of-the-range brand quality without the "gaming" brand tax, it's a win-win.

Apple AirPods Pro 2

AirPods Pro 2 are one of those earbuds I appreciate for their mix of sound quality and thoughtful features. At $199, they offer a strong balance of value and performance. The active noise cancellation blocks out a lot of background noise while adaptive audio automatically adjusts based on your surroundings. You get four sizes of silicone tips for a customizable fit, and once those are set they stay comfortable even through longer listening sessions. The personalized spatial audio and hearing aid features add extra depth, giving them more flexibility than just a standard pair of wireless earbuds.

INIU Portable Charger 10000mAh 45W

Ideal for carrying around when you've forgotten to put your phone on charge overnight, 45W is more than enough power to charge anything on the go, from phones to the Nintendo Switch 2. Who can argue for $12?

Donkey Kong Bananza

If you own a Switch 2 and not Donkey Kong Bananza, there's something a-miss. We've given it a rare 10/10, and it's officially Nintendo's latest handheld's first killer app and system seller. It's from the same team behind Super Mario Odyssey and takes full advantage of the power packed into Nintendo Switch 2. Get it, play it, then thank me later.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's Naomi Ackie in Early Talks To Star in DCU Body Horror Movie Clayface

23 juillet 2025 à 17:19

Clayface is starting to take shape. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Mickey 17 actress Naomi Ackie is in early talks to star in the upcoming DCU feature helmed by Speak No Evil director James Watkins.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ackie participated in a reading session just last week, in which she ended up the favorite for the role. If she officially joins the project — and according the outlet, negotiations are to begin soon — she will star alongside Tom Rhys Harries, a Welsh actor known for his work in British television, who is already set to play the title character.

Horror favorite Mike Flanagan — who is known for his own expansive body of work of adapting classics such as The Haunting of Hill House, and creating whole new stories in both the film and television spaces — penned the script.

The film is set to follow a rising star actor who ends up with a disfigured face at the hands of gangsters. In an effort to try to get his old life back, he visits a questionable scientist (THR called this character an “Elizabeth Holmes-style” analyst, which certainly garners a laugh and, furthermore, intrigues) who performs what appears to be a successful treatment on him… but of course, this is a body horror movie, so things simply cannot end there. Ackie's potential role in the film is under wraps, but it seems like she could be playing the scientist, which would be wonderful casting.

According to the outlet, the film will have a similar feel to David Cronenberg’s beloved 1986 body horror classic The Fly, starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. The Batman director Matt Reeves is producing the picture alongside Lynn Harris and DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The movie is set to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2026 — and we can’t wait to see who else joins the fray for this one.

Osiris Review

23 juillet 2025 à 17:00

Osiris opens in select theaters and is available on VOD on Friday, July 25.

Fusing the commandos-versus-extraterrestrials chaos of Aliens with the craptastic space-industrial aesthetic of the first Doom movie, Osiris marks a pivot for B-action director William Kaufman. His previous shoot-'em-ups, while derivative, were at least grounded in tone: 2011’s The Hit List is a shameless Collateral riff, while 2023’s The Channel copies Heat and The Town. Osiris, like Kaufman's 2016 zombie thriller Daylight's End, ventures into more fantastical terrain, this time an unimaginative sci-fi jumble that pits a grizzled Special Forces unit against man-eating monsters from beyond the stars. And while I can usually appreciate the earnestness of the director’s overwrought run-and-gunners, trying to harness the genre brilliance of James Cameron (going so far as to draft the performer behind his most iconic character) is a bridge too far.

Osiris follows a crew of rifle-toting grunts who are first seen shooting their way through an anonymous foreign enemy on Earth before being abducted in a flash of crimson light. Once they awaken from embryonic pods aboard an alien ship, the team grapples with strange and inexplicable new memories and abilities. Their leader, Kelly (Max Martini) suddenly speaks Russian, which proves handy once they bump into Ravi (Brianna Hildebrand), an inscrutable Russian stowaway who serves as the film's primary exposition device.

Between the Kaufman specialty of kinetic, overindulgent shootouts, Kelly, Ravi, and the squad pause for downtime in convenient hiding spots aboard the ship. There, they establish backstories and forge sudden, unearned bonds, like Kelly and Ravi's quasi-father-daughter connection. Time that might be better spent mounting a defense or losing their minds is instead occupied by dreary blasts of play-by-play concerning the basic thrust of the story. What are the aliens after? Ravi: "A meal." Why did they come to Earth? "We rang the dinner bell," says fellow Russian Anya (Linda Hamilton, in a thankless extended cameo), referring to the Voyager probe intercepted by the aliens – a grimmer conclusion to NASA’s deep-space exploration mission than the one offered by this summer’s Elio.

If you haven't set your brain on autopilot by the first few minutes of Osiris, you might have a rough go of it. Still, there is morbid fun in picking the movie's logic to bits. For instance, why do space aliens leave deadly weapons lying around if they can be insta-killed by them? If Ravi and Anya have survived onboard for years, as they say, what have they been living on? Space rats? Do they hydrate by collecting condensation from the walls? And if these creatures are man-eaters, why obliterate their prey with high-powered cannons?

Osiris suggests untold sci-fi/horror possibilities, but Kaufman refuses to go to the extremes that might make his movie memorable. The aliens, who should feel terrifying and unknowable, are revealed unceremoniously in well-lit shots, looking every bit like stunt performers decked out in off-the-rack space armor and force-field riot shields. If you squint, some of the sets vaguely resemble the interstellar meat-grinder causeways of Event Horizon, but more often function as cover-shooter levels where gunfights pop off with all the tension of a paintball match. Death arrives not in monstrous body horror but in standard-issue war-movie finishes, mostly head shots and explosions. Somewhere in his trip to outer space, Kaufman retreated to his comfort zone of militarized cannon fodder blasting their way out of a conflict. No wonder, then, that the movie he made is such a snooze.

Samsung HW-QS700F Review

23 juillet 2025 à 17:00

In an audio world where surround sound and Dolby Atmos are becoming more and more accessible with each passing moment, Samsung is out to prove that there’s still a market for a solid soundbar that forgoes rear speakers in favor of leaning into its front soundstage. The brand’s new HW-QS700F is just that, a 3.1.2-channel system that sounds excellent, except for the times when it leaves you wishing it had those elusive rear channels to complete the ensemble. Still, it’s a Dolby Atmos-enabled bar that steals a few pages out of its flagship sibling, delivering great sound that’s sure to impress for a price that’s far more comfortable than its aforementioned relative.

Specs

  • Price: $699.99
  • Channels: 3.1.2
  • Drivers: 8 total speakers
  • Connections: HDMI eARC 2.1, Bluetooth 5.3, Optical Digital Audio
  • Audio formats: Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus), Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos (True HD), Multichannel PCM, Dolby Multichannel PCM, DTS Digital Surround
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 116 x 51 x 120 inches
  • Weight: 4.4 pounds

Samsung HW-QS700F – Design and Features

If you squint at the HW-QS700F, you might mistake it for Samsung’s flagship Q990F. It borrows much of that same sleek, minimalist design language – which is great news if you like your AV gear to blend in, not stand out.

Samsung's connectivity perks are all here, including wireless Dolby Atmos when paired with a compatible Samsung TV. In theory, this is handy for wall-mounted setups or anyone who breaks into hives at the sight of dangling wires. In practice? It works, but like most wireless tech, it’s not infallible. For those who value rock-solid signal reliability, wired will still be the way to go.

Samsung’s much-touted Q-Symphony also makes a return, letting your Samsung TV’s speakers play in unison with the soundbar. It’s a neat trick, but again – more of a party trick than a necessity. You’re unlikely to miss it if you never use it.

What does genuinely stand out is SpaceFit Sound Pro – Samsung’s automatic room calibration tool. While not quite on the level of pro calibration gear, it’s an earnest attempt at tailoring sound to your room’s acoustics. It adds value, especially for people who don’t want to fuss with manual EQ tweaking.

Samsung HW-QS700F – Performance

The HW-QS700F wastes no time showing off. The bar’s sound is crisp, bold, and wonderfully balanced across bass, mids, and treble. I tested it with a smorgasbord of content – Season 2 of The Last of Us, which navigates between whispered dialogue and chaotic action, and Deadpool & Wolverine, which mixes some truly awesome action with a great soundtrack. The QS700F handled it all with impressive poise.

When it came time to put Dolby Atmos to the test, The Greatest Beer Run Ever on Apple TV+ has been my go-to thanks to its extraordinary depiction of wartime Vietnam and the sights and sounds that come with it. It offered plenty of dynamic vertical effects that the up-firing drivers translated nicely. But it never quite enveloped me the way a true surround system does. The audio soared above and to the sides, sure – but the rear was noticeably vacant. That sense of immersion – the feeling that something (or someone) is creeping up behind you in a dark forest (TLOU vibes) – just wasn’t there.

To Samsung’s credit, you can add rear speakers. But they’ll run you another $300, bringing your total dangerously close to the price of a Sonos Arc Ultra. That’s where the value proposition starts to fray a little.

Beyond the bar itself, I feel the need to once again give Samsung’s SmartThings app its flowers. The soundbar companion is easy to use, well laid out, and full of helpful controls, taking a lot of the pain out of customizing your sound. Whether you’re adjusting EQ, toggling modes, or switching inputs, the app keeps things intuitive. No steep learning curve, no frustration.

Samsung HW-QS700F – The Competition

The HW-QS700F sits in an increasingly competitive mid-tier soundbar market, and there are a few worthy alternatives that might sway your decision depending on your priorities. The Vizio 5.1.2 Elevate stands out as a budget-friendly option that includes rear speakers and still supports Dolby Atmos, making it an enticing choice for those craving full surround sound without spending extra on add-ons. It may lack the refined polish of Samsung’s offering, but it delivers strong performance for the price.

Then there’s the Klipsch Flexus Core 200, which undercuts the QS700F in price and brings along bigger, more aggressive bass and surprisingly solid Atmos performance. While its design and ecosystem don’t match Samsung’s seamless feel, it's a compelling alternative for bass lovers. Finally, for those willing to stretch their budget a bit more, the Sonos Arc Ultra becomes an intriguing option. Even without rear speakers or a subwoofer, it delivers a beautifully wide and detailed soundstage.

Preorder The Dark Knight Trilogy 4K Steelbooks

The library case holding all of the films has a very cool design on it that features the Batman logo layered on top of itself three times in different colors: a gold, grey, and black. Each case for the film highlights a different character as well, with Batman gracing the cover of Batman Begins, Joker on The Dark Knight's cover, and Bane on The Dark Knight Rises. The fourth case, which contains some fun extra items, comes in a striking gold color with bats across the front.

Every Pokémon Game on the Nintendo Switch in 2025

23 juillet 2025 à 16:32

Often cited as one of the world's most valuable media franchises, Pokémon is a household name that's been a Nintendo staple since the Game Boy. The beloved series is home to hundreds of amazing creatures you can catch in-game or collect as trading cards, with each new generation bringing loads more to discover. Every console released by Nintendo has had plenty of Pokémon games released for it, and the Nintendo Switch is no exception.

Pokémon Day brought tons of new announcements about what's next for the franchise. Below, we've compiled every Pokémon game that has been released on Nintendo Switch and the information we have on upcoming Pokémon games releasing on the Switch 2.

How Many Pokémon Games Are There on Nintendo Switch?

In total, 12 Pokémon games have been released for the Nintendo Switch. This includes the mainline games for the 8th and 9th Pokémon generations as well as plenty of spinoffs. For the sake of this list, we've counted mainline entries with two versions as a single release. We also don't include the Pokémon games offered through Nintendo Switch Online, but you can check out that list below.

What Pokemon Game Should You Get in 2025?

If you're wondering which game is worth picking up on the Switch in 2025, my recommendation is Pokémon Legends: Arceus. It's not going to give you that OG Pokémon game feeling, but that's what the older generation games are for. Instead, Legends: Arceus introduces more action and RPG elements to the Pokémon series, offering the freshness of open areas to explore, more control over encounters, and plenty of polish for the handheld.

All Pokémon Games on the Nintendo Switch (in Release Order)

Pokkén Tournament DX (2017)

Pokkén Tournament was originally released for the Wii U in 2016. A year later, Nintendo and Bandai Namco prepared a deluxe version of the game for Nintendo Switch, adding new characters and updated visuals to take advantage of better hardware. This three-on-three battle system is a blast to play with friends both in person and online.

Pokémon Quest (2018)

Pokémon Quest turns all your favorite Pokémon into miniature cube form. This free-to-play Switch game features a fun and simple combat system where you send Pokémon on expeditions. Equip different abilities to your Pokémon to handle all types of encounters.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! & Let's Go, Eevee! (2018)

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! & Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! are remakes of the beloved 1998 Pokémon Yellow. These titles were the first mainline Pokémon games ever to release on a home console, since none made it to the Wii U. Set in the Kanto region, all 151 original Pokémon appear with varying forms from previous mainline installments. With heavy accessibility features, these remakes were a great first step for the series on Nintendo Switch for newcomers and veterans of the series.

Pokémon Sword & Shield (2019)

Pokémon Sword & Shield marked the first installment in the series to feature aspects of an open world. Dubbed the Wild Areas, these regions allowed for free traversal and battles with wild Pokémon. Gyms also made a return for the first time since X & Y. Additionally, Sword & Shield introduced the eigth generation of Pokémon, which included Dynamax and Gigantamax forms of previous Pokémon.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (2020)

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake of the 2005 titles Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team & Blue Rescue Team. Surprisingly, this is the first Pokémon spinoff remake ever, with development handled by Spike Chunsoft. The gameplay consists of completing jobs in different dungeons and unlocking new Pokémon along the way.

Pokémon Café ReMix (2020)

The other Pokémon release of 2020 was Pokémon Café ReMix featuring similar gameplay to other puzzle games like Disney Tsum Tsum, which requires you to connect Pokémon together to solve puzzles. In Pokémon Café ReMix, you and Eevee own a café and must serve the Pokémon who come for food or a little drink. This charming service game is free-to-play via the Nintendo eShop.

New Pokémon Snap (2021)

After more than 20 years, the Nintendo Switch is the console that finally received a sequel to Pokémon Snap. Developed by Bandai Namco, you traverse around different biomes and areas with an on-rails camera to capture pictures Pokémon in the wild. You can unlock new courses by taking good pictures in New Pokémon Snap, leaving for a sizeable amount of content to unlock and discover. You never know what you might find during each session!

Pokémon Unite (2021)

This free-to-play game marked Pokémon's first entry into the MOBA genre. You command and control a team of five Pokémon in head-to-head battles against other players online. There's a solid amount of Pokémon to choose from, so you can adjust your team to best fit your needs. Pokémon Unite went on to be featured in different esports tournaments, with multiple championships held for the game.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (2021)

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl are remakes of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, which originally released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. As the fourth generation of Pokémon, Diamond & Pearl feature a wide variety of Pokémon to battle against and discover. The remakes feature a new chibi art style that was created to stay faithful to the original titles while still remaining fresh.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus (2022)

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is often praised as one of the best Pokémon games available on the Switch. This original title takes place far in the past, somewhere in the Hisui region. With a focus on exploration, you can freely walk all around the map to capture Pokémon, explore different environments, and so much more. Pokémon can be spotted wandering around all over the map, which requires you to be strategic if you're looking to avoid battle.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (2022)

The latest mainline Pokémon games officially kicked off Generation 9, bringing along an entire new approach to gameplay and world design. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, an open world awaits with freedom to explore wherever your heart takes you. The DLC pass, titled The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, is now wrapped up, making it a perfect time to check out Scarlet & Violet.

Detective Pikachu Returns (2023)

One game and one movie later, the sequel to Detective Pikachu is finally available on Nintendo Switch. Tim's father is missing, and it's up to Detective Pikachu to solve the case! This sequel features new puzzles and investigations, where you can investigate scenes and use your notebook to get to the bottom of the mystery. If you're a fan of both Pokémon and mystery games, this is a great game to consider.

Available Pokémon Games With Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

The Nintendo Switch Online subscription service has additional Pokémon titles if you're looking for more after completing the Nintendo Switch library. Here are the five Pokémon games you can play with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership:

  • Pokémon Trading Card Game
  • Pokémon Snap
  • Pokémon Puzzle League
  • Pokémon Stadium
  • Pokémon Stadium 2

Upcoming Pokémon Games on Nintendo Switch

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the next mainline game launching on Nintendo Switch. The game is set in Lumiose City, within the Kalos regions. Tepig, Totodile, and Chikorita are familiar starting Pokémon, from Gen 2 and 5, but will be getting new Mega evolutions. "Rooftop parkour" and new battle mechanics also indicate an increased focused on real-time action.

In the April 2025 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo confirmed that Pokémon Legends Z-A will release simultaneously on both Switch systems, with the Switch 2 edition featuring enhanced graphics and better framerates. Nintendo more recently announced a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle featuring Pokémon Legends Z-A, which will release on the same day as the game itself, October 16.

Game Freak and The Pokémon Company have also announced Pokémon Champions, a new battle game in the spirit of Pokemon Showdown. Coming to mobile devices and Switch, you'll be able to battle with Pokémon you've trained in other games through the Pokémon Home app.

Sony Quietly Announces Mysterious PlayStation 5 Game Mode That Will 'Scale Back' Performance but Use Much Less Power

23 juillet 2025 à 16:29

Sony has announced Power Saver, a curious new PlayStation 5 game setting that will "scale back performance" of supported games but reduce your console's overall power consumption.

The option, which is rolling out in the next PS5 System Beta, was briefly detailed in a PlayStation Blog update today — even though it won't actually be available even in beta, at least publicly.

Today's announcement looks to be more of an acknowledgment that the feature is being worked on, then, ahead of it being spotted by users.

"With this update, you may notice a new option in your settings menu called Power Saver," PlayStation's VP of Product Management Shuzo Kikuchi wrote today. "While this feature won't be available during the beta phase, once it officially launches, supported PS5 games will scale back performance and will allow your PS5 to reduce its power consumption when the feature is enabled optionally by gamers.

"If not enabled, or if games do not support the feature, the performance will not be scaled back and power consumption will not be reduced."

And that's about all the details that Sony is announcing today, other than a confirmation that Power Saver will not be compatible with the console's VR mode — for those of you who bought a PlayStation VR2 headset.

More details on which games will support Power Saver, and how game performance will be degraded should you choose to turn it on, will be announced in the future.

"We'll share more details on this new option as we get closer to launch," Kikuchi concluded, "including supported PS5 games and estimated impact, so stay tuned!"

Why is Sony doing this? In its blog post, the company makes mention of its 'Road to Zero' environmental plan that includes a target for the company to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2040.

But the option has also been linked to the continuing rumors that Sony is once again planning a PlayStation handheld device. And indeed, the ability for Sony to get some of its PS5 games running at a lower spec on its main home console would be a useful test for a more lightweight handheld.

Whatever the reason, and whether Sony end up launching a PlayStation handheld or not, it's going to be fascinating to compare the performance of PS5 games running with Power Saver enabled, especially with Xbox Series X, and the already lower-power Xbox Series S.

Xbox U-Turns on The Outer Worlds 2 $80 Price Point, Reverting to $70 and Reimbursing Pre-Order Customers

23 juillet 2025 à 16:03

Xbox has announced that it will not be selling The Outer Worlds 2 - or any of its holiday games, for that matter - for $80 after all. Instead, it will be kept at $70.

An Xbox spokesperson shared the pricing changes with IGN today: “We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions.”

Refunds and reimbursements for those who have already pre-ordered the game for $80 will be available via whatever storefront or location the game was bought at. Xbox says that customers should expect refund notifications from the point of purchase, and some sellers may take a few days for refunds to be available.

This comes after an announcement earlier this month that The Outer Worlds 2 would be Xbox's first $80 game, while coming to Xbox Game Pass upon release as well. At the time, Xbox cited "market conditions and the rising cost of development" as the reason for the price increase on its biggest titles. The original The Outer Worlds cost $60 at launch, and a number of fans criticized the move especially in light of The Outer Worlds' generally anti-capitalist themes and story.

Xbox raised the price of its first-party AAA games from $60 to $70 for the first time officially in 2023. Its announcement earlier this month followed in the footsteps of Nintendo, which released Mario Kart World last month as its first $80 game and effectively opened the floodgates for other publishers to follow suit.

Despite attempts from executives and analysts to explain the reasons behind continued price increases of video games, consoles, accessories, and services industry-wide, gamers have remained frustrated at the growing expense required to participate in the hobby. Earlier this year, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford faced criticism for suggesting that if someone was a "real fan" of Borderlands 4, they'd find a way to buy it at $80 (the game was later announced to only cost $70).

82% of Nintendo Switch 2 Owners in the U.S. Also Bought Mario Kart World

23 juillet 2025 à 15:01

If you bought a Nintendo Switch 2 in June, the odds are good you also bought Mario Kart World. In fact, according to Circana, 82% of Nintendo Switch 2 purchasers also picked up Mario Kart World.

That comes from Circana's June report, which shared that the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially the fastest-selling video game console in the U.S. In total, the Nintendo Switch sold 1.6 million units in the U.S. in June, beating out the PlayStation 4's previous record of 1.1 million units in November of 2012.

Of those 1.6 million unit sales, 82% either purchased the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle, or bought the game standalone. This helped propel Mario Kart World to become the third best-selling game of the month in Circana's rankings, though it's possible it could have ranked even higher due to the exclusion of Nintendo's digital data from the sales charts.

As a comparison point, when the Nintendo Switch 1 launched, over 100% of new console owners that month also purchased its launch game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, worldwide. Yes, the game sold more copies on Switch than Nintendo did Switch systems. "This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play," Nintendo suggested at the time. So Mario Kart World isn't quite beating those numbers.

But it may also be doing even better in other countries. According to a report from Wccftech, the game's Switch 2 attach rate in France was over 95%.

Additionally, we learned from Circana this morning that 32% of Nintendo Switch 2 purchasers in June also bought a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, helping make it the best-selling accessory of the month in the U.S. by dollar sales.

Unshockingly, one of the reasons people are buying Mario Kart World is because it's pretty dang good. We gave the game an 8/10, saying that it "may not make the most convincing case that going open-world was the boost the series needed, but excellent multiplayer racing, incredible polish, and the thrilling new Knockout Tour mode still more than live up to its legacy."

The Nintendo Switch 2 Is the Fastest-Selling Gaming Hardware in U.S. History

23 juillet 2025 à 15:00

The Nintendo Switch 2 debuted in June to become the fastest-selling hardware ever in the U.S., shooting spending on games to new monthly records, according to the monthly report from Circana.

Spending on hardware was up a whopping 249% year-over-year thanks to the console's debut, reaching $978 million and greatly surpassing the previous monthly record from June 2008 of $608 million. In total, the Switch 2 sold 1.6 million units in the U.S. during its launch month, beating the PlayStation 4's previous sales record of 1.1 million units in November of 2013. Unshockingly, it was the best-selling console of the month both in terms of units and dollar sales.

Across both Nintendo Switch platforms, Switch 2-exclusive Mario Kart World was the best-selling game of the month, followed by Cyberpunk 2077 and Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, both of which launched alongside the new console. In fourth and fifth place respectively were Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, followed by Street Fighter 6, Mario Kart 8, Hogwarts Legacy, Bravely Default's remaster, and Minecraft. Because Nintendo doesn't share digital sales numbers with Circana, this chart may be missing some big sellers. For instance, we learned today that Deltarune topped Switch 2 charts in digital sales in June, but with no physical edition and the game only costing $25, it's missing from the dollar sales ranking entirely.

So does all this Nintendo Switch 2 success mean it's on track to outsell the Nintendo Switch 1? I asked Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, and this is what he told me:

What the launch sales of Switch 2 primarily tell us is that they made a lot of Switch 2 to sell at launch. Lifetime sales and launch sales of a console often do not correlate, meaning that some consoles with small launches ended up doing incredibly well lifetime (PS2 only sold 400k in its launch month) while others with big launches ended up not doing as well lifetime. Since launch month demand is rarely satiated by available supply (and it is certainly not a great sign when it is, historically) all we can really get a read on at launch is the confidence of the manufacturer to make so many units available, and the ability of the supply chain to get those units into the market.
But having the biggest launch month sales for any new video game hardware platform is a helluva good start.

Across all platforms, Elden Ring: Nightreign was the best-selling game of the month for the second month in a row, followed by debut titles Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Mario Kart World. Those numbers don't include Nintendo digital sales of Mario Kart World, and they also don't include physical hardware bundles, meaning Mario Kart World will likely have performed significantly better than is indicated here. Per analysis by Circana's Mat Piscatella, 82% of Nintendo Switch 2 buyers in June purchased Mario Kart World either via a standalone sale, or as part of a bundle.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma debuted at No.10. Stellar Blade ranked No.5 on the overall charts and was the second best-selling game on PlayStation thanks to its debut on the platform last month. And while Final Fantasy XVI didn't crack the overall top 20, it was the fourth best-selling game on Xbox, also thanks to its release on the platform in June. Overall, content spending in June was up 6% year-over-year, largely driven by Switch 2 game sales.

Accessories spending also set a new June record of $293 million, in no small part due to sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. It was the best-selling accessory of the month and has a 32% attach rate with Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.

  1. Elden Ring: Nightreign

Killer Inn Plays Like a Very Bloody Game of Clue - Killer Inn Hands-on Preview

23 juillet 2025 à 15:00

As someone who has gotten way too into in-person social deduction games in recent years, Killer Inn truly couldn’t have come at a better time. The delightful world of bluffs, social reads, mechanically obtained evidence leading to hidden baddies, and dramatic tension moments before all hell breaks loose is one of the most rewarding experiences in gaming. For this reason, it’s always been a wonder to me that we don’t see more of the genre despite the insane success of games like Among Us, but I have high hopes Killer Inn will be another powerhouse in this underutilized space. By smartly combining core social deduction philosophies with third-person combat and RPG mechanics, this murderous game of investigators and madmen carves a unique niche that had me cackling wildly in a matter of minutes. It might not have the most crisp gunplay or be the most intuitive game in the world (at least in its current beta state), but for a genre that’s criminally underappreciated, this could very well be quite the game changer.

Like any good social deduction game, Killer Inn divides its players into an uninformed majority (in this case, called Sheep), who work together to uncover the baddies, and a malevolent, informed minority (called Wolves), who attempt to kill all the good players before being found out. Wolves succeed when the Sheep fail to work together to solve the puzzle and allow themselves to be picked off, while the Sheep win when they trust one another and use their superior numbers to root out the evil players before the noose closes around them.

The main way this game of cops and robbers differentiates itself though, is in just how much depth there is to that familiar blueprint, as Killer Inn pulls in the design sensibilities of an action game to replace the more traditional sleuthing process. Instead of voting to decide which is the most untrustworthy player to be killed off, players must take it upon themselves to pull the trigger on or bury the hatchet into their fellow player. If they guess correctly, they can take an evil player off the board and make the good team that much more likely to succeed, but if they guess wrong they’re immediately punished by turning into stone and removing themselves from the match for good. This makes for a really neat dynamic, where you either need to gather enough evidence to know for sure that someone is a cold-blooded killer, or risk it all to take someone out before they get the chance to stab you in the back, which makes for a really tense dilemma.

On the other hand, if you’re playing as a Wolf, every time you kill another player you’ll leave behind a clue for the Sheep to find that will narrow down the pool of possible suspects, and if you intend to take out all the goodies in the match, then your unmasking is almost an inevitability. But you can also go for a more discrete approach and blend in with the Sheep, aiding in their efforts to complete quests and, ultimately, to take the one ship off the island, hoping to turn good players on one another and wait for your time to strike. In one match where just three players remained, I watched as a Wolf convinced the last two living Sheep to fire at one another, while he waited to pick off the loser. It’s moments like that where the magic of Killer Inn really shines, and the proximity chat, where players can make social plays to make a foe think them a friend, allows silver-tongued agents to walk away with a victory in the coolest possible way.

"I killed four players with grenades right at the start of a match and was immediately an outed evil player for the rest of the game. Worth it."

Before you turn on one another though, you’ll have to loot gold, find consumables and weapons, and level up your character, and that’s where Killer Inn’s clever use of RPG mechanics really give it a unique flavor. Whether you’re good or evil, you’ll want to take on quests around the hotel given by NPCs and build up a respectable loadout before taking the figh t to your fellow players, because even if you unmask a Wolf, there’s little you can do if he’s got the bigger gun. This adds a compelling layer to the game of cat and mouse, where you’re rushing arou nd to acquire gear, but might drop whatever you’re doing once a body is discovered, as you’ll want to rush to the scene of the crime to gather a clue left behind as to who the culprit might be. As an evil, you might find it appealing to take down good players before they’re properly leveled, but subject yourself to scrutiny pretty early on that can be quite dangerous, like that time I killed four players with grenades right at the start of a match and was immediately an outed evil player for the rest of the game. Worth it.

The actual quests you’re sent on aren’t anything special, as most just require you to go from point A to point B to collect an item, or complete a simple minigame here and there, but these minor chores serve as a great excuse to break up good players and baddies alike into various parts of the map, which offers lots of room for murders to take place. Good players will also want to focus on destroying mean little floating orbs that guard certain areas of the map as each contain a key that can help the Sheep escape the map before getting killed – an alternate win condition that requires quite a bit of cooperation on the good team’s part. Meanwhile, as an evil, you’ll be doing everything to cover your tracks, including one clue leading to your identity that spawns on the map right at the start of the match, which can be concealed if you managed to get there before a Sheep discovers it…but getting caught in the act of destroying evidence carries its own risks.

With all I loved about my time with Killer Inn, one area that could probably use a bit of polish is the actual third-person combat, which felt a bit wonky at times. I wouldn’t expect a game so squarely focused on social deduction to be the next Marvel Rivals, but there was definitely a bit of sloppiness to the gunplay and melee shenanigans that could not feel great – then again, I only had a few hours to hone my skill, so it’s quite possible I just need to git gud. There’s a handful of weapons to find out in the world by completing quests, or buying from a vendor by collecting gold, plus armor, consumables, grenades, and more to help you on your way. Not only that, but equipment can be upgraded at workbenches scattered throughout the map to make your gear a bit more effective and give you an edge when things go sideways. It was a bit tough to figure out the best builds and strategies during the demo (I didn’t get to try out melee or stealth based builds, for example), since I was too busy learning the systems while frantically looking over my shoulder, but it did seem to have a bit of depth to it and a variety of playstyles to choose from, including preset perks depending on which character you chose to bring into battle.

I only got to play a few short hours of Killer Inn, but it’s already won my heart. I can’t wait to betray all my friends and loved ones in the near future, and hope it turns out as good as this early build seems to indicate.

The Fantastic Four That Almost Was

23 juillet 2025 à 15:00

Prior to the release of Blade in 1998, the mid-to-late ’90s was the not-so-mighty Marvel era. Despite generating hundreds of iconic comic book heroes and villains for decades, the company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the speculator boom in comics - peaking in 1993 with nearly a billion dollars in sales - was waning. There had not been a major theatrical movie ripped from the pages of the Marvel Universe since George Lucas' infamous Howard the Duck in 1986, followed by direct-to-video losers like 1989's The Punisher and 1990's Captain America.

It seemed like the company had hit rock bottom in 1994 when a Roger Corman-produced movie based on the Fantastic Four had been permanently shelved, yet this actually marked a new beginning that would eventually lead to an actual, big-budget, theatrically-released FF movie in 2005.

Come with us as we explore the long and winding road that eventually got Marvel’s First Family onscreen, including a look at the script for the film that Harry Potter director Chris Columbus wanted to make.

The Corman Four

Since the early ’80s, German film producer Bernd Eichinger of Neue Constantin Film (The Neverending Story) had been pursuing the movie rights to the Fantastic Four, Marvel's Silver Age flagship created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The team consisting of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing had been integral in establishing the more semi-grounded tone of what became the Marvel Universe (Spider-Man, the Avengers, etc.), and was also the subject of several animated series. Eichinger saw the potential of a big screen iteration, finally purchasing the screen rights for around $250,000 in 1986 with the assistance of Lee, who had made it his mission to bring Marvel's characters to movie theaters. Lee moved from New York (Marvel HQ) to Los Angeles in 1978 when TV shows like The Incredible Hulk began building momentum for Marvel heroes on the small screen… but the creator had little luck getting movie versions of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and others beyond development hell.

Even though there was interest from Warner Bros. and Columbia, Fantastic Four faced the same trouble getting off the ground in Hollywood due to high expense as well as low capability of VFX to realize them onscreen. The estimated initial budget in the early ’90s was in the $45 million arena, which would have made FF one of the most expensive films ever… not to mention the extreme likelihood of shooting past that number. When Eichinger's rights to the team were set to expire on December 31, 1992, if he did not have a film in production, he acquired the services of B-movie king Roger Corman to quickly dash out a $1 million to $2 million ashcan version of a Fantastic Four flick directed by Oley Sassone (Bloodfist III: Forced to Fight). Both cast and director were in the dark about the scheme, and began promoting the film in the press. They were set to hold a gala premiere at Minnesota's Mall of America to benefit the Children's Miracle Network in January 1994, but just before that Eichinger, Marvel owner Avi Arad, and producer Ralph Winter (the Star Trek franchise) shelled out $1 million to Corman to acquire the negative and shelve the film.

According to a March 1994 report in The Los Angeles Times, Corman stated that Eichinger was "always planning to do a $40 million picture but couldn't complete the financing before his option ran out… I was glad for the money, but I'm disappointed that I won't get to release it." He also confirmed that 20th Century Fox and director Chris Columbus (who apparently expressed interest shortly after Home Alone) were already attached to the planned big-budget version, although both those parties denied being interested, possibly to separate themselves from a sleazy rights scheme which cheated a children's charity out of a premiere benefit.

Enter Chris Columbus, who officially confirmed his FF involvement the next year.

"Chris Columbus is going to write it and direct it," Stan Lee blabbed to The Arizona Republic in February 1995. "He's the guy who did Mrs. Doubtfire."

Columbus Sets Sail

A protégé of both Steven Spielberg and John Hughes, Columbus initially planned on becoming a comic book artist for Marvel. Having visited the set of his 2009 comedy I Love You Beth Cooper, this author can confirm that Columbus still draws most of his own storyboards for his movies.

"Comics are originally what I wanted to do with my life," Columbus told The San Francisco Chronicle in 1997. "I dreamed of going to New York and drawing Spider-Man. But when I realized I'd sit in a room for 12 hours a day and not talk, I decided to become a writer."

His attention shifted to film school at NYU before eventually selling his script for Gremlins to Steven Spielberg in 1981. He also wrote The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes for Spielberg before making his directorial debut with 1987's Adventures in Babysitting. That teen comedy featured an 8-year-old named Sara who is obsessed with Marvel's Thor, *sort of* depicted by future Kingpin actor Vincent D'Onofrio. Columbus hit paydirt in 1990 with the box office smash Home Alone, a Christmas comedy classic penned and produced by John Hughes that grossed over $475 million worldwide. He followed this with the inevitable Home Alone 2 as well as the Robin Williams megahit Mrs. Doubtfire, along with two smaller romantic comedies (Only the Lonely and Nine Months) before finally dipping his toe back into comic book waters.

'Comics are originally what I wanted to do with my life.' -Chris Columbus

In his spare time Columbus was a huge fanboy, haunting comic book shops in his San Francisco neighborhood and amassing a collection of around 2000 issues (mostly vintage Marvel) including Conan the Barbarian #1 and most of the early run of Amazing Spider-Man.

"When it comes to comics, you're either a DC guy or a Marvel guy, and the Marvel comics were very inspirational to me," Columbus told the Edmonton Journal in 1996. "The Marvel characters were the real characters as far as I was concerned. They always had the real problems, they were the characters with the hang-ups."

Although he harbored ambitions to make a movie about Marvel's famed web slinger (stating "Spider-Man would make a wonderful movie"), James Cameron had already been developing the property at the time. Instead, Columbus set his sights on Marvel's First Family, admitting it would not have been financially or technically feasible before mid-’90s VFX innovations, which included the squash-and-stretch of The Mask or the Silver Surfer-like T-1000 in Terminator 2. Columbus planned to max out those capabilities with his movie, telling The San Francisco Examiner, "For example, if the elastic Reed Richards and invisible woman Sue Storm get into a fight. Sue is likely to disappear, while Reed tries to woo her back by showing her he can turn into any shape of man he wants, tall or short, fat or slim."

His production company, 1492 Pictures, joined forces with Eichinger's Constantin Film to mount the ambitious Fantastic Four project. To pen the movie, these production companies along with their studio partner 20th Century Fox (where Columbus directed his previous five films) hired screenwriter Michael France of Goldeneye and Cliffhanger fame. Up until now two early drafts by the late France (who died in 2013) have been widely available on the internet, one from May 3, 1996, (160 pages) and another from a few months later on September 9 (136 pages). We were able to get our hands on a draft from December 6, 1996, that is a truncated (113 page) rewrite of France by Columbus himself. It gives us a glimpse into his vision, which retains many similarities to the film ultimately released in 2005 that was credited to France and Twin Peaks' Mark Frost.

The Dec. 6, 1996 Fantastic Four Script

Unlike the 2005 Fantastic Four, which opens with Reed and Ben soliciting funding for their space project from billionaire tech tycoon Victor Von Doom, Columbus' rewrite begins at 55-minutes to launch of the brilliant Reed's FF-4 Phoenix Space Plane. Reed and Sue (also the mission's financier) are already engaged, while he and Ben (described as a cigar-chomping Gulf War vet) have a lot of macho tension between them instead of being instigated by Victor. The 2005 scene of Johnny (a former Blue Angels pilot) arriving late with the intro of him on a motorcycle kissing a woman in another vehicle is on the page here. Funnily, when Sue asks the media-friendly Johnny why he broke quarantine, he replies, "I had a date" - Chris Evans' final line in the first Captain America film.

During a very Thunderbirds-esque scene of the Space Plane launching out of a mountain tunnel, Johnny uses his signature catchphrase "flame on!" to initiate a second-stage rocket boost, which Ben roasts him for. Their ship arrives at the massive Orion International Space Station, described pretty much as it appeared in 2005 with "pods and passages built around a central core." Onboard they find 35-year-old Victor Obtrech, a brilliant Russian scientist who was Reed's roommate at NYU (a nod to Columbus' alma mater). Victor "NOT Von Doom" has been stationed onboard Orion alone for 275 days, during which his wife and children were brutally murdered in Chechnya, turning him cold and self-serving in his grief.

The purpose of their mission is revealed in the form of the Nanochamber, an eight-foot tall room like the one in the Baxter Building in 2005 (the one that looks like Seth Brundle's pods in The Fly). Its purpose is to rearrange atom-sized molecules utilizing nanotechnology, which Reed and Victor demonstrate by turning a rotten piece of wood into gold inside said chamber. When Ben inquires why this couldn't have been done on Earth, Reed mentions the very slight possibility of their atomic alterations creating "self-replicating micromachines" (presumably not the tiny toy cars). Victor gets pissed when he learns Sue did not bring the animal test subjects he wanted to experiment on, which she feared could result in "mutant manifestation."

The fuming Russian returns to his private quarters, where he sneakily uses his computer console to overload the Nanochamber. Trying to avoid an explosion, Ben volunteers to repair it, foreshadowing with the quip, "My ass is turnin' to stone just sittin' around this place." During the repair, a laser mesh penetrates every inch of Ben's body, and then when the chamber's entrance explodes, the mesh penetrates the other three's skin as well. The blast sends the station hurtling towards low orbit (i.e. crashing), and although Reed tries to find Victor, he can't. A burned/charred Victor watches as the Phoenix ship with the four onboard leaves the self-obliterating station behind, screaming "Noooooooo!!!" He crawls inside the Nanochamber as pieces of metal debris meld with his body, turning him into a "hybrid of skin and steel." Even his voice sounds electronic as he informs mission control, "I shall be your doom."

Meanwhile, the Phoenix crashes in a wooded upstate New York mountain area. Reed, Sue, and Johnny make their way out of the craft, with the latter's hand melting an imprint in the hull (the first sign of things to come). We then cut to a scene almost identical to the 2005 movie where Ben wakes up in quarantine and Johnny does a psych-out pretending Ben has turned horribly ugly, only to reveal his normal face. The only difference is in this script Johnny does the punch line with an 8x10 of Ben, where the movie (more effectively) uses a mirror. Next up, Johnny goes from quarantine to jumping out of a helicopter to ski with a girlfriend named Frankie (in the movie it's Maria Menounos credited as "Sexy Nurse"), exactly like 2005 right down to a line about the loser having to pay for room service and Johnny discovering his flame powers.

Reed and Sue discover their powers during a romantic interlude at a secluded cabin, but the tone is more haunting than 2005's jokier version, with Sue's invisible frame revealed by a rolling fog. Reed is blown back by her force field, crashing into a railing and folding into a tangle of limbs. Over at Ben's Brooklyn brownstone he's about to propose to his girlfriend Carlene when a tactical squad arrives telling him he has to come back in due to an anomaly in his blood cells. Ben then begins to painfully transform into his rocky Thing form as Carlene runs away in horror. He is finally brought down by six tranquilizer darts after crumpling a lightpole with his newfound strength.

We cut to an aircraft testing center where Sue narrates about their mutations and their augmented flight suits (also exposed to the energy). Reed is run through a taffy-puller-type machine, Sue lifts a tank with her fields, and Johnny amplifies the flames of a jet engine. Reed concludes there is no danger of infection, so they can rejoin society, but Ben is still upset at his appearance, blaming Reed.

This is where the script takes a very different turn from the finished film by introducing a new antagonist: Marius Morlak ("Maris" in the comics), leader of Enclave. On New Years Eve, this mad former scientist (along with his machine gun-packing goons) manages to sneak an explosive disguised in a canister onto an under-construction NYC skyscraper, and threatens to incinerate six blocks of Manhattan if he does not get $100 million worth of diamonds in two hours. Machler, the government guy holding the FF under strict quarantine, thinks Morlak is bluffing, but Reed thinks it’s a legit threat.

MORLAK: "Start spreading the news, we're dying today. I want to blow apart… New York, New York."

Locked inside an underground cage, the team argues about whether or not to escape and try to save the city, with Reed and Sue convincing the other two to help. Ben knocks their titanium cell door down, then Reed rejiggers his face to look like Machler. They manage to make it to a hangar, where they board a Reed-designed experimental segmented vehicle (i.e. the Fantasti-Car, eventually seen as-described in the sequel to the 2005 film, 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer). The FBI give Morlak a suitcase full of diamonds, which the villain examines with a loupe and realizes are fake. "Their loss," he says.

The FF swoop in as the Fantasti-Car splits into four separate units in different directions. Reed's lands, and when an Enclave goon fires at him, the bullets bounce off and back at the goon, killing him. Ben's crashes because his fingers smash the controls, but he emerges. Morlak tells one of his helicopter pilots to "Take care of that… thing." The copter fires, but the bullets also bounce off of Ben, who grabs a 30-foot crane arm and does the Babe Ruth "pointing to right field" stance before knocking the helicopter out of the sky, causing it to explode into a fireball. Need we mention he says "It's clobberin' time" before doing this?

Morlak gets in his second copter to escape, so Reed begins trying to deactivate the bomb… but realizes it's a decoy. The real one is in the Times Square Happy New Year ball, rigged to drop in 30 seconds, right where Sue is. Reed tells her to get the heck out of there, but she is able to contain the explosion with her force field, struggling to maintain it as the bubble of fire ascends into the sky (shades of the Captain America: Civil War opening with Wanda). Reed asks her to send it horizontally to him, then asks Ben if he can use his rubbery body as a slingshot.

Meanwhile, Johnny flames on and flies after Morlak's helicopter, melting a hole in its windshield. Morlak grabs a machine gun and fires at Johnny through the hole, turning the chase into a dogfight. The villain uses a grenade to explode a rooftop water tower, which douses/extinguishes Johnny, who lays vulnerable on the rooftop as Morlak leans out to finish him off. Suddenly, the force field bubble crashes into the helicopter and incinerates Morlak. Reed then stretches his arms across Times Square to catch a fainted Sue, kissing her, before the Fantastic Four look down on the crowd to cheers.

A New York Post headline reads: FANTASTIC FOUR HALT MIDTOWN MELTDOWN

While all this might sound very climactic (right after this, Johnny creates the flaming "4" in the sky just like the end of FF 2005), this is only the halfway point of the script. It gives you a good idea of the humor, fidelity to the comics, and the slightly more edgy/violent approach Columbus and France's script took, as well as the differences/similarities to the 2005 film.

The script had humor, fidelity to the comics, and a slightly more edgy/violent approach.

It's safe to say the script only gets wilder/more expensive-sounding from here. In the interest of space, here's a bullet-point rundown of highlights from the second half…

  • Then NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani helps the team celebrate the opening of their new headquarters, Four Freedoms Plaza (not the Baxter Building).
  • Victor/Doctor Doom has now taken over Latveria in a coup using high-tech flying Doombots with advanced weaponry. He's threatening all surrounding European nations. A reporter asks Reed if the FF would intercede in such an international dispute (shades of the new Superman), but Reed says he will defer to the President.
  • Reed also mentions the upcoming date when he and Sue will get married. This leads to a fight with the two of them about how many times they've already put it off, reminiscent of the start of Rise of the Silver Surfer. To cut the tension, he morphs himself into a taller, square-jawed version of himself for her, a scene Columbus mentioned in the press (see earlier in this piece) and which did make it to the 2005 film.
  • Ben (in his trademark trench coat) and Johnny (in Armani) walk by a store selling bootleg FF toys and other merch, which pisses the latter off. The 2005 movie nods to this with Johnny holding a prototype Thing toy. There was also a similar deleted scene in Tim Burton's Batman Returns of a store full of Bat Merch. Johnny runs off to tape a David Letterman interview while a mob of reporters hound Ben down an alley, where he ducks into an art studio and meets the blind sculptor Alicia.
  • Johnny goes over monetary figures for a Super Bowl appearance, a commercial, and hosting SNL when he sees Ben has crushed his Porsche into a cube for making fun of his appearance on Letterman. The two almost come to blows but Sue stops them. This scene is transposed from FF headquarters to the sports arena in 2005.
  • Doom and his Doombots arrive at FF HQ. Reed realizes it's Victor, who gives an insincere gesture to join forces. The FF refuse, and then Ben attacks him but they realize this is a Doom robot. It explodes.
  • The real Doom flies a massive space ship to the United Nations Building, where he disintegrates the Secretary General and then states his case for the entire world to live under one sovereign ruler… UNDER DOOM. He pledges to eliminate war, hunger, and to augment humanity's bodies so they never die. He asks the world leaders to think it over, and destroys the building as it "no longer has any purpose."
  • The FF arrive too late to save the UN, and are then lambasted in the press. Johnny loses his HBO special, his Wheaties box, and his Nike deal. Both he and Ben decide they've had it with the team and walk.
  • There’s an extraordinarily unfortunate scene with Johnny drinking at the World Trade Center's Windows on the World restaurant, where some drunken businessmen begin making fun of the hero, saying, "He'll probably burn the whole place down!" Yikes.
  • The four reunite in the Fantasti-Car to take on Doom. Ben's line to Reed was transposed to a different scene in 2005 almost verbatim: "Good thing you're flexible enough to watch your own back, Richards. 'Cause I won't be." They fly past the Statue of Liberty, now remade in Doom's image.
  • Our heroes arrive in Latveria, where Doom's nanotech gas takes over their flying vehicle as the team passes out. Doom traps Reed in a chair with many mechanical arms instead of freezing him like in 2005. The villain explains his plan to use nanotech to create a "hypercane," a giant hurricane shaped like a man (absorbing things through its mouth Galactus-like, while also resembling the man-like dust storms in The Mummy) that will destroy New York and any other place that defies him… leaving 4 billion people dead.
  • Johnny and Sue pilot an amphi-plane to escape Doom's hydrobase, and then fly directly into the active hypercane. Meanwhile, Doom gives Ben the choice to revert to his human form in the Nanochamber, almost beat-for-beat from 2005. Doom then puts Reed in a machine that will separate his body into 100 tube-like strands similar to the way Reed is killed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ultimately, Ben returns to the Nanochamber, turning back into The Thing so he can save Reed.
  • Ben fights Doom's Adaptoid, which can mimic whatever molecular structure it contacts (also similar to the future Sentinels in X-Men: Days of Future Past). Ben defeats it by making it mimic water, then throwing a support beam into it. He then tricks Doom into entering the Nanochamber, where Ben traps him and transforms Victor into a being made of glass… which shatters.
  • Meanwhile, Reed convinces Johnny to go super nova, just like the end of the 2005 movie, but this time to stop the hypercane. Johnny outmaneuvers thermal bombs and then flies at such speed that he turns white hot like a solar flare, destroying Doom's airship, the Fantasti-Car, and knocking Johnny unconscious. The hypercane collapses on itself.
  • The script ends exactly where Rise of the Silver Surfer begins, with Reed and Sue getting married on a rooftop with helicopter paparazzi observing. Johnny blasts the bouquet away from his girlfriend Frankie (see the end of Rise of the Silver Surfer) towards Ben's girlfriend Alicia. Reed and Sue ride off together in a "JUST MARRIED" Fantasti-Car, with the joke-y final titlecard: COMING SUMMER 2000 – "FANTASTIC FIVE: THE NEW BABY".

Falling Into the Negative Zone

During early pre-production, Columbus began seeking a real-life actor couple to play Reed and Sue, with Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid eventually attached to the picture. Several respected thespians (Alan Rickman and Geoffrey Rush) were eyed for Doctor Doom. Artist Tim Flattery, who had designed Arnold Schwarzenegger's superhero Turboman for the Columbus-produced Jingle All the Way, created several FF concept illustrations (dated 1997), including one with updated chrome-lined outfits for the team as well as Doom with more advanced metallic facial features. Flattery later designed the Fantasti-Car for 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and would work on many MCU projects.

In March 1996, Avi Arad and Fox seemed to be getting ahead of themselves, announcing the development of a Silver Surfer spin-off movie parallel to FF. Meanwhile, what was originally planned as a modest $6 million to $9 million vampire hunter movie for New Line under director Ernest Dickerson turned into the $50 million event film Blade when Wesley Snipes signed on. A few big directors reportedly flirted with making it, including David Fincher and Sam Raimi, before Stephen Norrington came aboard.

The year 1997 proved a huge turning point in superhero movies with the failures of Spawn, Steel, and most resoundingly, Warner Bros' all-timer disaster Batman & Robin.

The year 1997 proved a huge turning point in superhero movies with the failures of Spawn, Steel, and most resoundingly, Warner Bros' all-timer disaster Batman & Robin. It was rumored that there were over 20 comic book-based properties in development at Fox alone, including an Iron Man movie with Nicolas Cage. Knight Ridder reported an ambitious slate of Marvel flicks percolating all over Hollywood that year, including Silver Surfer (directed by Geoffrey Wright), X-Men, and a (according to Avi Arad) "action-adventure comedy" take on Fantastic Four with Columbus still attached to direct at Fox. Philip Morton (Fire Down Below) had by now contributed to the script. Columbus was also pulling double duty penning Fox's Daredevil, to be directed by Carlo Carlei (Flight of the Innocent, Fluke) and heavily inspired by writer Roger McKenzie's run on the comics in the late ’70s. Elsewhere at Universal, Gale Anne Hurd was producing a Hulk movie, Paramount developed Captain America, Columbia hired David Goyer to pen Doctor Strange, DreamWorks Animation worked on Mort the Dead Teenager, and director Philip Kaufman planned an environmentalist take on the Sub-Mariner.

By early 1998, word was that Columbus' Fantastic Four had been benched despite coming very close to production. Batman's Sam Hamm was hired to add more humor and help bring the costs down on what was rumored to be a Titanic-sized $200 million-plus budget, but by then Columbus had ultimately decided to bow out of the director's chair despite putting years into the film. The director stated publicly that there was worry the movie he envisioned could cost $280 million, and now that we have read his script, one can see why. He would remain as a credited executive producer, with Peter Segal (Tommy Boy) becoming the first of a rotating roster of helmers to attempt it.

1998 was also when Snipes' Blade became the first successful Marvel Comics feature film, taking in $131 million globally. In the midst of all this, Avi Arad brought a terrible TV movie into the world titled Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., starring David Hasselhoff as Fury and penned by Blade writer David S. Goyer. One step forward, two steps back. Despite all the development heat, several other big Marvel projects were stalled, with Bryan Singer's X-Men given a blinking greenlight by studio head Tom Rothman pending rewrites to bring costs down. Spider-Man's myriad rights issues had 20th Century Fox's legal department scrambling so Cameron could direct his finished script, even as Sony pursued the rights for Roland Emmerich to make the film. Universal pulled the plug on the Hulk movie once the budget swelled to $100 million and they had to can director Jonathan Hensleigh due to inexperience. Those three high-profile films would eventually get made in 2000, 2002, and 2003, respectively, kicking off the modern superhero era we are now immured in.

The year 2000 saw a new FF director with some Columbus "DNA" in the form of 41-year-old Raja Gosnell, the editor of many Columbus films as well as the director of Fox's Home Alone 3 and Big Mama's House. Gosnell was photographed in the LA Times next to a massive concept maquette of The Thing. Fox president Tom Rothman wanted to fast-track the FF project after the success of the X-Men film, with a budget to match ($75 million). Gosnell was working closely with Columbus alongside his co-producer Michael Barnathan and screenwriter Sam Hamm to get Fantastic Four off the ground and in front of cameras before the end of the year. The comedic helmer had lobbied hard for the job, convincing skeptical Fox execs he could deliver "a big action comedy thrill ride like Men in Black," sparking backlash from fans upset at the word "comedy." However, Warner Bros. was simultaneously courting Gosnell to direct the live-action Scooby Doo, and by October he had jumped ship.

With Columbus now entirely focused on making the first two Harry Potter films back-to-back, in 2001 Peyton Reed (Bring It On) was brought onboard Fantastic Four to direct. Like Columbus and all the other filmmakers who were attached to this version of the film, Reed had a flair for comedy. Yet his initial vision of setting the story during the 1960s space race when the comic book was conceived did not meet studio enthusiasm… even though that's exactly what Marvel Studios is doing with it in this year's The Fantastic Four: First Steps (albeit an alternate timeline ’60s).

Reed then pivoted to a contemporary approach inspired by A Hard Day's Night where the Fantastic Four are the biggest celebrities of the day, and a camera in the Baxter Building captured reality-TV style candid footage of the team ordering pizza and arguing about who has the best costume. Although Reed's Fantastic Four never hit screens, he did hire writer Mark Frost, whose work was retained to final screen credit. Reed would later pour some of his ideas for FF into Marvel Studios' three Ant-Man movies, which he directed (Quantum Realm substituting for Negative Zone, etc).

After the success of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man in 2002, writer Michael France told the Tampa Bay Times that he hoped another Marvel superhero movie he had written - Ang Lee's The Hulk - would ride its coattails into production, which it did. He was also writing The Punisher movie, which Hensleigh made in 2004. France upheld that if executives "spend the money to make it good and, most importantly, stick to the characters - have fun with it, but don't make fun of it - then there's a huge audience for that."

Five years after he delivered his last Fantastic Four draft to Fox, France reasoned that the film had not been made yet because "it's unbelievably expensive. It's probably one of the most expensive comic book movies you can make with special effects shots to portray the characters… Spider-Man is only Spider-Man for about 30 percent of the movie. With Fantastic Four, The Thing is in effect in every shot. Even outside of action sequences, the comedy always revolves around The Thing and the Torch fighting at home, so even the comic relief scenes are, like, a million dollars per minute… The Hulk is not a cheap movie to make, but all they've got to deal with is one character and a villain. With Fantastic Four you've got the four of them plus a villain. In my script the villain was Doctor Doom, so there's a lot of expense in that too."

In the end, the version of the FF script that got the movie greenlit was an uncredited polish by Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), who toned down the celebrity aspect of Frost's draft while honing in on the idea of "an origin story of superheroes who didn't accept themselves as superheroes until the final sequence of the film." Once Tim Story (Barbershop, Taxi) was onboard to direct, he did go back to the many previous iterations for inspiration, telling the LA Times, "I read quite a few of them. You try and take the greatest hits. We would just take the older scripts and try to find the best of and see if there was anything we wanted to keep."

The Fantastic Four (Finally)!

When the second feature iteration of Fantastic Four finally reached screens in 2005 under the direction of Story, their solution to the Thing problem France discussed was to simply build an elaborate suit for performer Michael Chiklis instead of employing CGI the way the eventual 2015 and 2025 FF movies did. The result was satisfactory, though not much more streamlined from the version worn by Carl Ciarfalio in the Roger Corman production. Or, as 2005 Fantastic Four's executive producer Kevin Feige spun to Knight Ridder, "If it was really three people and a ball on a stick, we thought we'd be missing out on a lot of the fun. We really wanted the actors to be able to play off each other."

In the end, the version of the FF script that got the movie greenlit was an uncredited polish by Simon Kinberg, with Barbershop's Tim Story directing.

Fantastic Four was a hit in mid-2005, earning $333 million globally (on par with that summer's Batman Begins' $356 million), yet critics pilloried it with 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. Online fans were also very dismissive of Story's two FF movies, to the point that a planned third film (possibly featuring Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther) was scuttled by Fox despite adequate returns from the first two. Although the 2005 version at times feels cheap or generic, it is not a betrayal of the material at all, staying faithful to the delightful and earnestly familial nature of Lee/Kirby's original creation while bringing it into the 21st century. Placed next to more questionable Marvel movies of this era like 2003's Daredevil or Hulk, Story's film has a kind of noble integrity.

"I grew up on comic books," Story told the Baltimore Sun in 2005. "I definitely knew the world of Fantastic Four and thought if it was going to happen as a movie, I would go after it 100 percent."

One problem is the effects read like they are (quite literally) stretching the boundaries of the movie's ample $100 million budget, even as the story itself more-or-less isolates the characters within the Baxter Building for a good chunk of the runtime. Fantastic Four also feels a little at odds with its own light tone, with Chris Evans' Johnny Storm living his Maxim lifestyle, or the chamber Reed Richards constructs to rid he and his fellow four of their freakish powers resembling something from Cronenberg's The Fly. Even when it threatens to tread into existential body horror, the movie does not stray far from being (relatively) kid-friendly.

This indecisiveness has been highlighted by some of the film's actors. During an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns shortly before his death this past July, Doctor Doom actor Julian McMahon said the following of the two FF films he made with Story: "When we did the movies years ago, we were at the precipice of all that stuff happening. So, we were finding our way a lot, and we were trying to figure out what space the movie itself lived in. Was it a kid's movie? Was it a family movie? Was it more comedy-driven, or was it more trauma-driven? We were trying to find all that stuff as we were shooting."

Feige also hinted at this tonal tension when discussing the perceived battle between his summer movie and Batman Begins to The Gazette in 2005: "Batman, as it should be, is going to be very dark. Fantastic Four will have its share of drama, but it's also going to have a level of humor and fun that I think will make it stand out."

One bit of little-discussed off-screen drama? Chris Columbus was given the boot from the 2005 Fantastic Four (and its sequel) in pre-production, despite being credited on both films. He had no involvement at all with the final film, even though his initial creative direction came through in the final product.

"We were fired off of Fantastic Four," Columbus told Wilson Morales in 2015. "We had a meeting with the director and the producer. I’m a pretty gentle guy. I don’t go in as an 800-pound elephant and say, 'You got to this, and this, and this.' We wanted to see the conceptual art. We walked in, my partner and I, Michael Barnathan, and we said, 'Oh, this looks good,' nothing but compliments really. I may have asked a question about whether we were going to do a Ben Grimm CGI. I said, 'You really never get the size of Ben Grimm if he’s not CGI or something.' We left. About an hour later we got a call from the studio, and they said, 'We don’t think you guys should be creatively involved anymore. We’d like to take you off the movie.' I said, 'You don’t want us to produce?' and they said, 'No. We’ve got a producer. You guys will just be executive producers.' That was the end of that. That was the end of Fantastic Four for us."

At its heart, the Fantastic Four has always been about a loving dysfunctional family, something the new film from Feige and Marvel Studios appears to be adhering to. Through years of persistence and the initial juice of Chris Columbus' involvement, Bernd Eichinger was able to bring the group properly to the screen despite contractual, financial, and personnel setbacks. A nascent slate of films based on Marvel characters was still in the awkward stage, and FF was similarly grasping to strike the right tone while trying to capture what was already indelible on the four-color page. It took an army of at least 12 creatives to generate a workable script from logistically challenging material.

The seams certainly show in how the movie barely – but ultimately does – function… kinda like a family.
