Artificial intelligence buzz is all over the news, but for all the technology’s potential, a key piece of the AI story that’s not covered enough is tech companies’ need for existing content to train AI models on—and sometimes using that content without its owners’ consent.

Mac gaming lands big win with Assassin’s Creed Shadows launching same day as PC and consoles

16 mai 2024 à 17:32

Apple silicon’s arrival on the Mac has led to renewed hope of a robust macOS gaming market emerging. For as loved as Macs may be among the general population of users, when it comes to gaming, PCs and consoles have long proven necessary if you want to play the latest games. Apple’s success with gaming on iOS has not translated to the Mac.

But things have started to shift. Last year Apple debuted a new porting tool that enabled PC games to more easily be brought to macOS, and we’ve started to see more AAA titles come to the Mac as a result. Typically though, those titles have launched only after extended runs on other platforms.

Now, we may have evidence of even more hope for Mac gaming’s future, as one of this fall’s highly anticipated titles, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, is coming to the Mac day-and-date with the PC and consoles.

Samsung, how much creativity does it really take to parody an Apple ad?

16 mai 2024 à 16:02

Last week Apple released an ad for its new iPad Pro that was widely panned. The ‘Crush’ ad showed a variety of creative instruments being crushed and ultimately transformed into an iPad Pro. The message was simple: thanks to the iPad’s power and app ecosystem, all of these creative tools can exist together in a new form, an ultra-thin M4 iPad Pro.

The image of destroying beloved creative tools, though, didn’t send the desired message. Apple later issued an apology. Now Samsung has released its own parody ad, ‘UnCrush,’ which itself demonstrates a continued pattern of lacking creativity.

New Magic Keyboard is a surprisingly compelling reason to upgrade to an M4 iPad Pro

15 mai 2024 à 22:22

The M4 iPad Pro has a lot going for it to tempt prospective buyers. Whether you’re coming from a 2018 iPad Pro like me, or a newer M-class iPad, there are plenty of great reasons to upgrade to the new iPad Pro. The OLED display can’t be beat; the M4 chip is unmatched in Apple’s lineup; and on a lesser note, there’s even a color-matched USB-C cable with the space black model.

The upgrade incentive I didn’t really expect, but that’s hitting me hardest today, is just how much better the new Magic Keyboard is than its predecessor.

And yes, sadly the new keyboard is exclusive to the M4 iPad Pro.

Yesterday in its spring update, OpenAI launched a fully-native Mac app for ChatGPT and also debuted its new flagship model, GPT-4o. There was no shortage of remarkable demos and excitement, especially for Apple users mulling the rumored Apple-OpenAI partnership for iOS 18.

One key thing that caught my interest in the full event video was a forthcoming ChatGPT app feature that was demoed but without any real details shared. What feature? The ability for ChatGPT to see everything happening on your device’s screen.

Making iPadOS finally live up to the iPad’s overachieving hardware

14 mai 2024 à 19:31

Every time a new iPad Pro is released, the reviews repeat the same narrative: powerful hardware, hamstrung software. The M4 reviews have been no exception.

This gap isn’t because of a lack of effort on Apple’s part. The company has continually developed and pushed iPadOS forward in the nine years since the iPad Pro debuted. But the general consensus among reviewers is that there’s still a lot of work to do.

But what, exactly, would that work look like? How might the iPad’s software finally make good on the potential of its hardware?

Federico Viticci at MacStories has attempted to answer exactly those questions.
