Global anti-doping chief admits drugs cheats in sport are escaping detection

12 décembre 2025 à 15:18
  • Howman: ‘We are not effective enough at catching cheats’

  • Former Wada director general urges more ambition

One of the most senior figures in global anti-doping has warned that too many drug cheats in sport are evading detection – and criticised the current system as “ineffective”.

David Howman, the former director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and the chair of the Athletics Integrity Unit, urged anti-doping bodies to be more ambitious in catching elite athletes again rather than focusing on compliance issues.

Sabastian Sawe: the marathon star on a mission to be drug tested as much as possible | Sean Ingle

9 décembre 2025 à 09:00

This year’s London Marathon winner deserves credit for offering more than enough proof he is clean while setting a new standard for other athletes to follow

Last week the world’s best marathon runner, Sabastian Sawe, looked me straight in the eye and told me “doping is a cancer”. Then he insisted he was clean. You hear such oaths and affirmations all the time. But, uniquely, Sawe recently backed up those words by asking the Athletics Integrity Unit to test him as much as possible.

You see, Sawe believed he could break the world record in Berlin in September. And he also understood that Kenya’s abysmal doping record meant that success would be met with more raised eyebrows than a plastic surgeon’s clinic in Hollywood. So the call went into the AIU. Test me. Repeatedly. Throw everything at it. My sponsors, Adidas, will pick up the bill.

Alex Yee runs second fastest British marathon time to trail only Mo Farah

7 décembre 2025 à 12:49
  • Olympic triathlon champion runs 2:06:38 in Valencia

  • The only faster time by a Briton is Farah’s 2:05:11 in 2018

Alex Yee, the Olympic triathlon champion, has become the second-fastest British marathon runner in history with a stunning run in Valencia. The 27-year-old finished seventh in a strong field in a time of 2hr 6min 38sec, quicker than any Briton in history apart from Mo Farah, who ran 2:05:11 in Chicago in 2018.

It was a remarkable performance, especially given Yee took up the marathon only this year as a mini-sabbatical from triathlon after he won gold in Paris. As Yee crossed the line he roared to the skies before placing his hands to his head, in disbelief at the time he had just achieved.

World Athletics scraps takeoff zone idea to avoid ‘war’ with long jumpers

3 décembre 2025 à 12:19
  • Plan was introduced to reduce number of foul jumps

  • ‘Athletes do not want to embrace it,’ says Jon Ridgeon

World Athletics has scrapped plans to introduce a takeoff zone for the long jump rather than the traditional board because of widespread hostility from athletes.

Jon Ridgeon, the governing body’s chief executive, said that while the proposals had gone well in trials, “you ultimately do not want to go to war with your most important group of people”.
