Bitter cold envelops US south as central states recover from freeze
Polar vortex chilled central US, downing trees, blasting snow, shuttering schools and causing traffic pile-ups
The next round of bitter cold enveloped the southern US on Tuesday, after the first significant winter storm of the year blasted a huge swath of the country with ice, snow and wind as far south as Florida and Texas.
The immense storm system brought disruption over the weekend and on Monday to much of the mid-Atlantic region, triggering the announcement of states of emergency in several states. It even hit areas of the country that usually escape winter’s wrath, downing trees in some southern states, threatening a freeze in Florida and causing people in Dallas to dip deep into their wardrobes for hats and gloves.

- Former world No 13 to face Sweden in qualifying tie from 31 January
- De Minaur, Thompson and Kokkinakis also selected in squad
Nick Kyrgios is in line to make a sensational return to Australia’s Davis Cup team for the first time in more than five years. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who has been taking the first tentative steps on the comeback road after long-standing injuries, is a shock selection by captain Lleyton Hewitt for the qualifying tie against Sweden in Stockholm starting on 31 January.
In the team nominations unveiled on Monday, the 29-year-old’s name in Australia’s four-man outfit raised eyebrows particularly as he’s shown no interest in the men’s “World Cup of tennis” ever since he last played against Belgium in November 2019.
