Apple mysteriously drops $23 million lawsuit against recycler accused of stealing iPhones

After five years, Apple has dropped a $23 million lawsuit against recycling firm Geep Canada, with no explanation for how the alleged theft of 100,000 iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch was resolved.

While the lawsuit was not revealed until October 2020, it was in January that year that Apple filed its suit against Geep Canada. The company began recycling devices for Apple in 2014, but during an audit in 2017, Apple claimed to have discovered that Geep had failed to destroy almost 100,000 devices.

The discovery was reportedly made after Apple's auditors visited Geep's facility and found Apple Watches being stored in a section without security cameras.

Ireland is Apple's second home, says Tim Cook

Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote to Ireland's new prime minister to congratulate him and talk about the future of the company in the country.

Ireland is Apple's base for the whole of its non-US sales, and was at the center of a decade-long tax dispute between Apple and the EU. On January 23, 2025, Micheal Martin became Ireland's Taoiseach, or prime minister, for the second time, and Tim Cook sent him congratulations in the following week.

The text of Cook's letter has now been seen by The Irish Times, and excerpts from it include the Apple CEO describing Ireland as "incredibly important" to the company."

Foldable iPhone and iPad will both launch in 2026, says analyst

Analyst Jeff Pu claims that Apple is about to start prototyping its first two foldable devices, with mass production scheduled for 2026.

Pu says that manufacturing will begin in the second half of 2026, which matches recent rumors, at least concerning the iPhone Fold. Since January 2025, multiple rumors have claimed that Apple has selected its foldable display manufacturer.

Jeff Pu's new note, as seen by MacRumors, specifically states that there are to be two foldable devices. He says that they are entering Apple's New Product Introduction (NPI) stage, and that mass production is scheduled for 2H26.

Apple quietly launches new app to help firms improve Apple Maps

Apple appears to be expanding its pool of partner companies supplying data for Apple Maps, as it has now released an app especially for firms to contribute updated information.

Just as it did with the Apple Vision Pro Demo Fit app — releasing it in the App Store but practically hiding it, Apple now has another new app. This one is called Surveyor, and while it is available in the US App Store, it does not appear to be intended for public use.

Rather than the GPS tracking, multiple cameras and LiDAR scanning that Apple's fleet of Apple Maps cars use, Surveyor is intended to capture images of street signs. While members of the public can already send certain updates to Apple Maps, this appears to be more about getting the company extensive information without its own cars having to repeat routes.

iPhone 17 lineup names may be coming into focus

A new rumor claims that Apple will overhaul its naming of the entire iPhone 17 range and see the highest-end model renamed the iPhone 17 Ultra.

Render of possible iPhone 17 Pro models

There have been rumors of an iPhone Ultra for years, with it sometimes being a new model and sometimes a renamed Pro Max edition. This new claim, however, says that Apple will do this in particular to make a greater and perhaps clearer separation between iPhone models.

"It seems that the existing lineup will be differentiated by changing the naming to Ultra, which is more different from the existing Pro and Max," claims leaker Yeux1122 (in translation). "Essentially, Apple is trying to make new changes by making major design changes to existing iPhones + iOS19 changes in terms of marketing and sales."

Calls for Tim Cook's resignation over Apple Intelligence miss that he has made Apple what it is

Apple's mistakes and even lies about Apple Intelligence are ultimately the responsibility of CEO Tim Cook, but he's not going anywhere — and nor should he.

Tim Cook

It's true that the buck stops at the CEO, but without Tim Cook, Apple would not have so many bucks. So while there is much to criticize in how Apple has managed Apple Intelligence, there's also much we'll never know — and no justification for wild cries for his apologizing or being fired.

This is what we know was wrong. Apple should not have released that ad showing a woman using Siri to remind her of the name of someone she'd met before.

iPhone 16e users report Bluetooth audio problems

Multiple reports from owners of the new iPhone 16e claim that Bluetooth audio keeps dropping out — but there appears to be a fix on the way.

In what appears to be a repeat of the 2018 issues with the iPhone XS, an unknown number of iPhone 16e users are consistently having audio connectivity issues with Bluetooth speakers and headphones. It appears to be much more widespread than the iPhone XS issue, and may be related to having multiple Bluetooth accessories connected at the same time.

Apple Intelligence, Home Hub, and Sonos on the AppleInsider Podcast

Sonos has cancelled its streaming device, Apple has delayed the Home Hub, more iPhone 17 rumors, and Apple Intelligence is now being called an overhyped lie, all on the AppleInsider Podcast.

Some day Apple Intelligence will do all that Apple promises

After last week's high with so many new devices from Apple, this week is a startling low with so many delays and cancellations. Only Sonos has outright cancelled anything, though, as its streaming Apple TV 4K rival has been dropped. That's got to be a shame for everyone who worked on it, since the device was reportedly in testing, but maybe Sonos is right to drop attempts to move into new areas when its core business needs attention.

But speaking of attention, sheer floodlights have been shone onto Apple this week after it quietly admitted to delays in Apple Intelligence and specifically Siri's personalization. It's been like the emperor's new clothes, but if criticisms of Apple and of its AI efforts are valid, there is still the strong chance that the company's Apple Intelligence may yet prove to be the best of them all.

RCS messaging will get end-to-end encryption on iPhone

Apple has announced that it will add support for end-to-end encryption to RCS messaging on iOS, although there are few details about when this will happen.

RCS support will be extended to include end-to-end encryption

After years of bizarre pressure over how Messages has blue bubbles for iOS users and green for Android ones, and maybe a nudge from China, Apple finally added support for RCS messaging with iOS 18. Its implementation, though, did not support Google's implementation of end-to-end encryption.

Now as first spotted by 9to5mac, the RCS standards body GSM Assocation (GSMA) and Apple have announced new end-to-end encryption support on iOS.

Apple is lying about Apple Intelligence, John Gruber says -- and he's right

Long-time Apple pundit John Gruber has launched an uncharacteristically strident attack against what he says are Apple's lies over the Apple Intelligence roll-out. And, he's spot-on with his arguments and conclusions.

For years, John Gruber has hosted "The Talk Show," an extended post-WWDC conversation with Apple executives such as Craig Federighi. He's also written about Apple extensively, and in recent months has been increasingly critical of Siri — as have others, including AppleInsider, but now he's gone further about what he calls the AI fiasco.

"The fiasco here is not that Apple is late on AI," he writes. "The fiasco is that Apple pitched a story that wasn't true, one that some people within the company surely understood wasn't true, and they set a course based on that."

It's still not rolled out to all Apple devices, but now subscribers to Apple Music Classical can listen online.

If it seemed a very long time between Apple buying Primephonic and finally releasing it as Apple Music Classical for the iPhone, it's now been about as long again. And still, the service is limited to just a few devices — but now its full catalog is available through a web browser.

Apple Music Classical is available online at classical.music.apple.com, and subscribers can log in to listen. New users are prompted to try a one-month free trial.

Don't worry if Apple claims you still need to send a trade-in device

An unknown number of users have had Apple Store emails erroneously saying they haven't sent in an iPhone they actually traded-in months ago.

Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max could be bought for hundreds of dollars off after a trade-in

Apple heavily promotes trading in your old device to get money off a new one — and seriously profits when you do — but usually the process is straightforward. On March 13, 2025, however, an update to the Apple Store systems resulted in some users being emailed about allegedly failed trade-ins.

"Just letting you know that your device has not been received," says the email from the Apple Store. "In seven days your trade-in will be cancelled, so please ship your device soon."

Sonos abandons its streaming Apple TV rival even as it was in testing

Troubled audio company Sonos has reportedly told its staff that work on its promised streaming video player is now canceled.

The player, codenamed Pinewood, was first reported on in 2023, when together with an AirPods Max-style rival, it was thought to be Sonos directly taking on Apple. Then, however, an update to its existing iPhone Sonos app was so faulty and so poorly received in early 2024, that the company ultimately saw its CEO resign.

Now according to The Verge, interim CEO Tom Conrad and his management team has held an all-staff call. In it, Conrad announced the cancellation of the Pinewood project and the redeployment of staff to other projects within the company.

Home Hub may not ship until iOS 19 launches

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple's expected new Home Hub device has been delayed until after WWDC in June 2025.

Variously called a Home Hub or a HomePod with a screen, this new device is expected to be a smart home controller that might in fact resemble an iPad. Whatever it's ultimately called, code references to what appear to be it were found in February 2024, and a display manufacturer was reportedly selected in January 2025.

One of the few consistent predictions about the device is that it is forever six months away, and one recent report claimed it would now launch in late 2025. Now Ming-Chi Kuo's new claim on Twitter backs that up, and says the delay is because of continuing problems with software development.

UK says Apple stifles browser innovation, but chickens out of imposing regulation

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority wants Apple to allow rivals like Facebook to offer browsers on iPhone, but passes the buck on doing anything about it.

UK Parliament

Back in November 2024, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK released a preliminary report saying that Apple blocks developers' ability to offer innovation in the browser market. Apple responded by saying the CMA was giving too much weight to the self-interest arguments from its rivals.

Now the CMA has released its full report which chiefly ignores Apple's position on browsing. The CMA's original investigation was also into the area of cloud gaming, but the regulator says Apple's recent rule changes have satisfied its concerns.

iPhone 17 Slim could be 30% thinner than the iPhone 16

Backing up one of the several rumors about the thickness of the expected iPhone 17 Slim, a new report claims that it around a third thinner than some other iPhone models.

Some previous reports of the thickness of the forthcoming slimmer iPhone in the iPhone 17 range have insisted that battery issues mean it can be no less than 6mm. However, one report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed it will be 5.5mm, and now a leak from "Ice Universe" backs that up.

According to a post on Chinese social media site Weibo, the iPhone 17 Slim (in translation), "has a camera bump of 4.0mm and a total of 9.5mm."

Apple Account Card rolling out to six more countries

The Apple Account Card feature is coming to six more countries very soon, although it isn't available for all users yet.

Apple Account Card is a feature of Apple Wallet, where users can deposit money that can then be spent on Apple Services and products. Rather than being akin to the Apple Card or Daily Cash services, it's a descendent of the old iTunes Pass that was originally phased out in 2022.

Since then, Apple Account Card has been available in the US, and a few other countries, but reportedly it is now expanding to Austria, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. According to a tweet from Nicolas Alvarez, the feature is said to either be available in these countries now, or possibly "it will be enabled in a future software update."

Apple announced the new M3 11-inch iPad Air and 13-inch iPad Air on March 4, 2025. Unusually, Apple did not do its usual taking down of the online store or even having any delay, as instead pre-orders were being taken immediately.

Then just as with the iPhone 16e, there has also not been the familiar situation of the most popular configurations being immediately placed on back-order. Throughout the pre-order period, at least most colors and configurations of both the 11-inch and 13-inch models remained available for shipping to arrive on launch day.

Rumored iOS 19 & macOS 16 design changes will be polarizing, as always

Apple is rumored to be overhauling the design of iOS 19 and macOS 16, and based on what's happened before, the changes will polarize users before ultimately becoming accepted.

This rumored redesign could even be enormous, and may follow previous claims that Apple will bring visionOS design touches to all of its platforms. Whether or not Apple Vision Pro actually has any impact on iOS and macOS, though, Apple's two main operating systems have seen radical resigns in the past.

M4 MacBook Air review roundup: Welcome upgrade, but no surprises

The first hands-on reviews of the new MacBook Air with M4 processor have appeared, and so has a consensus that it's a worthy but not special upgrade.

Given that the previous model, the M3 MacBook Air was described by AppleInsider as the best Mac for most people, its M4 update was never likely to tarnish that reputation. Especially not since the new edition comes in at $100 cheaper than the 2024 model.

So across the board, there is a lot of praise for the new MacBook Air. It is certainly a good buy and it appears to remain the sweet spot in Apple's lineup.
