Someone Has Dug Up Raw Audio From a Classic Episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, and It's Incredible

Someone has dug up and published a rare raw audio recording of a classic SpongeBob SquarePants episode, which includes SpongeBob swearing, lots of goofy gags, and the fun origins of one of the best-known SpongeBob memes.

What seems to be a clip of raw voice-recorded audio from SpongeBob SquarePants episode 33a, Shanghaied, appeared on YouTube and Archive.org last week. As far as anyone can tell, the audio is legit — the recording is an hour and fourteen minutes long and includes all of SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and the Flying Dutchman's lines. That includes loads of outtakes, fun conversation between takes, and even some lines and gags that were changed slightly in the final version.

Shanghaied sees SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward stumble upon the Flying Dutchman's ghostly ship, where they get up to some ghost pirate hyjinks while trying to keep the Dutchman from eating them. The original episode was a special airing featuring two alternative endings that audiences were encouraged to vote for, each one different depending on which character received a "wish" from the Dutchman. Shanghaied includes a number of well known SpongeBob gags that have achieved meme status over the years, including Patrick yodeling "LEEDLE EEDLE EEDLE" and a frantic sprint through "the perfume department."

The original audio is a delight to listen to. There are some slight differences from what aired, most notably in the first part of the episode when SpongeBob declares "The sky had a baby!" and Squidward suggests he climb up the "umbilical chord" — this was changed to the less scientific "anchor rope" in the final episode. There's also an entire cut line, where Patrick says, "I knew our oufits weren't skimpy enough," in response to the Dutchman deciding to eat the trio rather than keep them on his ghostly crew. The censors probably wouldn't have gone for that one!

Throughout, you can hear actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), and Brian Doyle-Murray (The Flying Dutchman) getting up to all sorts of laugh-inducing shenanigans between takes. There's a lot of joy, too, from the late show creator Stephen Hillenburg, who you can hear directing and who appears to be directly responsible for approving Fagerbakke's "LEEDLE" yell amidst Fagerbakke's various takes.

Toward the end, Kenny even does the unthinkable: he makes SpongeBob drop an F-bomb at the prospect of being eaten by the Dutchman. Kenny's being goofy — the crew has to do several takes on this one, because the directors don't want the screaming to be too graphic. They're told not long after they can't tell the Dutchman not to be "such a jerk," and Kenny adjusts it to "so mean" instead.

The whole file is a really enjoyable listen for anyone who likes SpongeBob, but fans seem nervous that it won't be available for long. The file seems to have already been torn down from its original spot on archive.org, so it's only a matter of time before it vanishes from other places too. Enjoy SpongeBob saying [dolphin noises] while you can!

We interviewed Fagerbakke a few years ago upon the debut of The Patrick Star Show, and chatted with him and Kenny again the following year to learn how to talk like their characters. SpongeBob SquarePants itself is currently in the midst of season 14, but has been renewed for a 15th season.

The Elden Ring Community Loves Shadow of the Erdtree's New Thrusting Shields

Is the new Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, too difficult? Opinions are mixed, but fortunately, there are many options to make the DLC more doable if you're struggling. One of them that's particularly beloved by the community right now is one of the new weapons introduced in said DLC: thrusting shields.

The Elden Ring community has reached a consensus: these shields are good. Real good. There are dozens of threads on the Elden Ring subreddit praising them over the last few weeks, with one thread in particular shooting to the top of the subreddit in recent days with the following subject: "New Thrusting shields are the strongest weapons in the entire game and it's not even close. NG+ DLC was absolutely obliterated. Thrusting shields can be enchanted with any affinity/damage type that makes them extremely versatile. And it's just so much fun to slap the grace out of every single boss!"

Based on all the upvotes and comments, the community agrees. Some people are even suggesting the shields are too good, and that they're bugged, though other players insist their excellence is intended behavior.

If you're not familiar with thrusting shields, this new weapon type was added in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC along with other weapons like perfume bottles, hand-to-hand arts, and throwing blades. Unfortunately, there are only two of these shields in the entire game: the Dueling Shield and the Carian Thrusting Shield. These shields allow players to both attack and defend at once, and two-handed thrusting shield builds are especially powerful, allowing players to perform lunging stabs that deal major damage, all while still guarding from enemy attacks. And when you throw certain talisman or flask benefits on top of that (such as the Two-Handed Sword Talisman or the Deflecting Hardtear), the build becomes even more powerful.

Thrusting shields are so good, they enabled one player to beat Messmer...using a saxophone as a controller.

WE DOOTED HIM

At long last: after only 30 minutes of trying, I defeated Messmer the Impaler using an electric saxophone as a controller.

No summons. Just doots and the Carian Thrusting Shield.

This DLC is a masterpiece. pic.twitter.com/dX42XFYDRD

Regardless of how you feel about the thrusting shield build, it was inevitable that with time and practice people would find ridiculous new build combos in Shadow of the Erdtree that allow for "cheese" boss strats. Brutal as the expansion can be, tricks like this can help players push through its most challenging fights. That, or just finding enough Scadutree Fragments like everyone keeps telling them to.

Nintendo 3DS StreetPass' Puzzle Swap Has Been 'Beaten' After 13 Years

A community of dedicated Nintendo 3DS Street Pass fans has finally found the rarest puzzle in Puzzle Swap, ANAでDS, after weeks of searching. This means StreetPass Mii Plaza: Puzzle Swap has officially been 100% completed for the first time since its release 13 years ago.

We covered the group's hunt last week, as for months a small community of Puzzle Swap-lovers has been hunting down every puzzle ever made available for the Street Pass app. That includes several time and region limited puzzles that over the years have become quite rare.

As of June they had found every single puzzle bar one: a rare airplane-themed puzzle that was only available at select airports in Japan for a few months. The group was exhausting every connection they could to find just one person who obtained the puzzle back in the day, at which point a simple file upload would allow the group to share it with the world.

Yesterday, July 3, 2024, someone finally came through. Community leader Benny received an email from an individual containing a friend code and a zip file with the text, "I hope the following information is exactly what you're looking for." The community immediately got to work. While the file itself looked promising, they needed the person who sent it to accept a friend request first for the transfer to work. The data also needed to be decrypted and put into a usable format, a process which multiple Discord community members helped with.

Then, at 4:45pm Pacific time, a post:

And moments later:

The Discord erupted. The stranger who had reached out with their puzzle had come through, and at last all 63 Puzzle Swap puzzles had been found and archived. In the following hours, the group worked together to share the puzzle with everyone in the Discord who wanted it, before discussing plans to bundle all 63 puzzles together in one file so that anyone in the future who wants access to them can enjoy.

Here it is, in all its glory:

If you yourself want all the puzzles, you do have to be willing to mod your 3DS. For help with that, we recommend tracking down the community behind the hunt, which has a Twitter, email, and Discord all right here and can help out. But even if accessing the puzzle is only doable via modding, this remains a triumph for game preservation and archiving. It is, to the group's knowledge, the first time all 63 Puzzle Swap puzzles have been assembled in one place.

So what's next? It's tough to say. The community first wants to ensure that all puzzles are readily available to anyone who wants to put in the modding work to obtain them. After that, there's been some discussion in the group about finding ways to add custom puzzles to Puzzle Swap, or try other modding feats with what the group has learned. But many are content just to have finished the puzzle hunt at all.

"I just want to thank the team for their hard work and everyone else who shared and promoted the search!" Benny said when I asked him for comment. "We are grateful for everyone's support."

IGN reached out to the kind stranger who sent Benny the ANA file to try and learn the story behind them picking up the puzzle and finding the hunt years later, but we haven't heard anything back yet. Thanks, mysterious stranger, whoever you are.

The Catholic Church Is About to Canonize Its First Gamer Saint

Well, it was bound to happen eventually: the Catholic Church is preparing to canonize the first-ever gamer saint.

Earlier today, the Vatican announced it would canonize Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager who will be the first millenial saint of the Catholic Church. Acutis died from leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15.

Acutis was born in 1991 in London, and moved to Milan, Italy with his family not long after. He grew up in the Catholic faith, frequently volunteering with homeless individuals, cleaning up litter in his neighborhood, working at his local church, and otherwise performing acts of kindness.

Alongside other hobbies and interests, Acutis apparently enjoyed video games and was known to play Halo, Mario, and Pokemon. His mother claims that while he purchased a PlayStation when he was eight, he limited himself to just one hour of gaming a week due to concerns about addiction. Acutis was adept with technology, and has been referred to as "God's influencer" due to his work documenting various Catholic miracles on a website he designed.

Acutis has been undergoing the multiple steps of the canonization process for the last several years. Canonization can often take years or even decades, typically requiring at least two miracles be attributed to the candidate alongside further evidence of a life of faith. But Acutis' cause has been taken up by many in part due to his relatability and popularity with younger Catholics.

The cause for his canonization was opened in 2012, just six years after his death (a five-year wait period is required). He was decreed "Venerable" in 2018, and beatified (declared "Blessed") just two years later in 2020, when the Catholic Church recognized one miracle attributed to him. Allegedly, a Brazilian boy with a severe birth defect who was unable to consume food normally was healed after his mother prayed for Acutis' intercession. A second miracle, involving a Costa Rican girl who supposedly was healed from a head trauma after her mother prayed at Acutis' tomb, has since been attributed to him.

With both miracles recognized by the Church, Acutis is set to be canonized, and will most likely be named a saint in 2025.

Notably, Acutis is the very first millenial Catholic saint, and the first ever saint (that we know of) to have played video games. This is in part due to the difficulty of canonization and the length of time it usually takes, resulting in most being canonized tens or even hundreds of years posthumously. In this case, Acutis' youth and recognizability among younger Catholics may be helpful to the Church in its ongoing efforts to connect with younger individuals and digital natives.

Let Me Solo Her Finally Defeats Erdtree's Final Boss After Three Hour Marathon That Left Them 'Shaking'

The Elden Ring community's favorite folk hero, Let Me Solo Her, has finally completed the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, after a streaming marathon spanning multiple days during which he struggled repeatedly against the DLC's final boss.

Warning: Spoilers for the ending of Shadow of the Erdtree follow below!

Tsuboi Klein, also known as Let Me Solo Her, has been steadily working his way through the new Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree with the rest of us. Just yesterday, he finally crossed the finish line, defeating Promised Consort Radahn live on stream after something in the vicinity of 74 attempts. Despite being thought of as something of an Elden Ring expert, Let Me Solo Her really struggled with the second coming of Radahn, only defeating him after several hours of attempts spaced out over two days.

"Holy crap, my fingers are actually trembling right now," he said upon victory. "I'm shaking."

Let Me Solo Her rose to notoriety by offering his summon sign to players struggling to beat the most difficult boss in the base game, Malenia. Wearing nothing more than a pot on his head, Let Me Solo Her has defeated Malenia hundreds of times now on behalf of others. While it might be natural to expect him to breeze through the DLC with skills like that, it's worth noting that Let Me Solo Her got so good at Malenia by practicing her fight a lot. It took him over 200 attempts just to beat her the first time. So it's only natural he'd get good at Radahn with practice, too.

So is Let Me Solo Her going to master Radahn and help others defeat him now? Probably not just yet. Let Me Solo Her acknowledged at the end of his stream that he had somewhat beelined his way to Radahn and hadn't finished a lot of the other DLC boss fights, so he wants to go back and wrap things up first. He also wants to enjoy the DLC a bit off-stream, too, just for himself. Additionally, he's already been spending his time helping others beat Messmer, another story-required boss fight that many are struggling with. He's even technically rebranded as "Let Me Solo Him" just for that fight. Let Me Solo Her will continue to assist other players with Messmer for a bit longer, he says, before moving on to helping people with Radahn.

We interviewed Let Me Solo Her two years ago during the height of his fame, and can confirm that he's delightful not just in battle against Malenia and Radahn, but also to speak with. And we caught up with him again ahead of the release of Shadow of the Erdtree to hear his plans for exploring the Land of Shadow. Sounds like that's going great for him.

10. We Spoke to 'Let Me Solo Her,' The Elden Ring Community Hero We Need and Deserve

It’s your 345th attempt to kill Malenia. Tired of the grind, you decide to call in reinforcements. You lay down a summoning sign outside the arena and wait. Moments later, the call is answered: A man appears before you wearing only the skimpiest of underwear and a jar over his head. His name reads “Let me solo her.” So you do, and so he does, single-handedly crushing Elden Ring’s hardest boss with ease. He bows. And then he’s gone.

LMSH is a legend in the Elden Ring community. His journey toward began mastering Malenia began during his initial run of Elden Ring, when it took him 242 attempts to kill what many believe to be the game’s hardest boss. Following his own struggle, he decided to help others: "I chose Malenia to help others because I fell in love with her design. All her attacks are very graceful and she is unforgiving as a boss. Her infamous waterfowl dance is considered to be the [hardest] to dodge moveset from a FromSoft boss to date, so I decided to prove to others that it was not impossible."
