KDE neon 20260305

KDE neon is a Ubuntu-based Linux distribution and live DVD featuring the latest KDE Plasma desktop and other KDE community software. Besides the installable DVD image, the project provides a rapidly-evolving software repository with all the latest KDE software. Two editions of the product are available - a "User" edition, designed for those interested in checking out the latest KDE software as it gets released, and a "Developer's" edition, created as a platform for testing cutting-edge KDE applications.

SmartOS 20260305

SmartOS is an open-source UNIX-like operating system based on illumos, a community fork of OpenSolaris. It features four technologies - ZFS (a combined file system and logical volume manager), DTrace (a dynamic tracing framework for troubleshooting kernel and application problems), Zones (a lightweight virtualisation solution), KVM and bhyve (two full virtualisation solutions for running a variety of guest operating systems, including Linux, Windows, BSD and Plan9). SmartOS is designed to be particularly suitable for building clouds and generating appliances.

Uncom OS is Russian commercial Linux distribution based on Ubuntu's long-term support branch and localised into Russian. It is developed by Advilabs-Rus LLC. Some of the distribution's more interesting features include a custom application store, out-of-the-box support for Flatpak packages, a Windows-style dock panel, extended support for VPN protocols, a custom application for restoring system integrity, and use of Bottles to run Windows applications. Besides commercial "Home", "Business" and "Education" editions of Uncom OS, the company also offers a freely downloadable trial variant for testing purposes.

Expirion Linux is a Devuan-based desktop distribution which offers LXQt and Xfce desktop editions. The project provides separate releases built from the latest "stable" and "testing" branches of Devuan, with runit and SysV as init system options. Expirion ships with a more recent kernel than Devuan does and it also adds some user-friendly touches, custom themes and wallpapers, as well as productivity applications, such as LibreOffice, Chromium, Firefox, Thunderbird, Audacity, Brasero and VLC.

T2 Linux 26.3

T2 Linux SDE is an independently-developed open-source system development environment (or distribution build kit). It enables the creation of custom distributions with bleeding-edge technology. Currently, the Linux kernel is used, but the project plans an expansion to Hurd, OpenDarwin and OpenBSD kernels too. T2 started as a community driven fork from the ROCK Linux Project with the aim to create a decentralised development and a clean framework for spin-off projects and customised distributions.

PrismLinux 2026.03.05

PrismLinux is a minimalist distribution based on Arch Linux. The live image boots into the River Wayland compositor and a custom system installer which provides several popular desktop options available for installation, including KDE Plasma, GNOME, COSMIC and Cinnamon, as well as a customized Niri Wayland compositor. The distribution uses the long-term supported (LTS) Linux kernel compiled with kernel parameters optimised for speed and it also includes a pre-configured TLP utility for extending battery life.

Linux Mint redesigned Lock Screen.Linux Mint is working on a redesigned screensaver and lock screen for the Cinnamon desktop. Based on our first look, it’s a solid improvement. If the word “screensaver” conjures flying star fields or photo slideshows, that’s fair, but in Cinnamon it also acts as the ‘screen locker’. In 2026, ‘saving’ the screen is less of a concern than ‘locking’ it, but many users enjoy seeing a pretty ‘idle’ display. ML4W OS is an Arch Linux-based distribution featuring a heavily customised Hyprland tiling compositor. The project specialises primarily in creating advanced configuration for Hyprland, so called "dotfiles", which are available for installation on several other Arch-based distributions, as well as Fedora and openSUSE. However, the live ML4W OS ISO image is a standalone, full-featured Linux distribution with all Hyprland configuration files, applications, icons, themes and wallpapers included. It can be installed to a hard disk using a custom text-mode system installer. The project also provides extensive documentation about setting up and configuring Hyprland.

AMD EPYC Achieves Performance Leadership In New OCUDU Project For 5G/6G RAN

Announced this week at Mobile World Congress (MWC) by the Linux Foundation was the establishing of the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation for advancing open-source AI-RAN (Radio Access Network) innovations. OCUDU is building a reference platform and innovations around 5G and early 6G network solutions. With OCUDU being benchmark-friendly, I have been putting the early code through some performance tests on current AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon server platforms.
