Apple’s ‘take its time’ approach proven right as its competitors keep failing

Apple has a reputation for taking its time with new technology. It is rarely first to the party, but often it arrives with an offering that sets a new standard.

There have always been critics to this approach, and that’s as true now as ever. But recent fails from some of Apple’s biggest competitors, particularly in emerging technologies like AI and robotics, have once again proven the advantage of Apple’s method.

The latest Apple TV+ movie is its best reviewed yet

If you had to name the best reviewed movie on Apple TV+, what would you guess?

CODA would be a good choice, since it won the Best Picture Oscar—the highest achievement possible for a film in the US. Another strong contender is Killers of the Flowers Moon, Martin Scorsese’s 2023 triumph. Or maybe The Tragedy of MacBeth comes to mind.

These are some of the most prestigious and praised TV+ original films, but they’ve all been bested by the latest new release on TV+.

Apple Intelligence stands poised to be the most powerful addition to the iPhone, Mac, and iPad this year. When iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18 debut this fall, they’ll include a host of Apple Intelligence features—albeit labeled as beta.

Despite the beta labeling, there are still several Apple Intelligence features that won’t even be ready at launch. Instead, they’ll be added over the course of the coming year.

The mute button gets a welcome, no-brainer upgrade in iOS 18 and tvOS 18

Not every piece of technology or feature needs upgrading over time. Some things work just fine the way they are, and any tweaking or “enhancements” will only make things worse.

I would have thought that a TV’s mute button was one such leave-it-alone feature. It’s simple, uncomplicated, and should stay that way. But Apple has changed my mind by introducing a no-brainer upgrade to the mute button in tvOS 18, iOS 18, and more: auto-subtitles.

These watchOS 11 features are exclusive to select Apple Watch models

The Apple Watch is getting upgraded with watchOS 11 this fall—but not all Apple Watch models. This year’s update drops support for several models that were compatible with watchOS 10, notably the Series 4 and 5 generations and the first-gen Apple Watch SE.

But that’s not even the full story. Even if your Watch is new enough to run watchOS 11, it may not get all of the update’s features. Here are the watchOS 11 features that are exclusive to select Watch hardware.

Apple TV+ releases a variety of new TV shows and movies every month, usually with a mix of brand new series and old favorites returning with new seasons. In July, however, there’s no such mix. While fans await the return of series like Severance and Silo later this year, this month Apple is focused entirely on new series for your summer enjoyment.
