Phasmophobia’s long-delayed console version finally gets release window

Phasmophobia hit it big back in 2020 when the game was released in Early Access, launching to near immediate success. In the years since, the team at Kinetic Games have continued to work diligently on the game, improving it across the board. Unfortunately, the game’s long-anticipated console release has been delayed multiple times. Finally however, we appear to have a solid release window.

Making the announcement via their Steam page, the Phasmophobia team at Kinetic Games offered a much-needed update on the current status of the game’s console release, saying:

“We are collaborating with Unity to work on the console release, as well as general performance optimisations for both console and PC, this will ensure that the console update runs optimally and to the high standards that we set for the game. Working with them means that we can work alongside them on new content for all platforms, allowing faster development of new updates. Future updates for the game will be released on all platforms simultaneously to ensure that cross-play is always available.”

With that, the team revealed that the console version will be coming out later this year “during our in-game Halloween Event”. Additionally, once the game is finally out on consoles, it should have full feature parity, including simultaneous updates with the PC version for all future patches.

As mentioned, Phasmophobia’s console release was delayed multiple times: first due to an office fire then due to various unforeseen circumstances. It’ll be a nice moment when the console version does finally come out, both for the players and Kinetic Games themselves.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the update? Are you excited for the console release? Let us know down below.

Analogue Pocket gets limited (and expensive) aluminium edition

The Analogue Pocket proved to be a pretty popular portable following its release back in 2021, with the FPGA-powered handheld giving owners an authentic feel when playing various titles from the Game Boy series of systems – while also offering some modern niceties. Already a rather costly device, the company has now announced a limited edition version of the Analogue Pocket which is made entirely out of aluminium.

Making the announcement on their website, the team revealed the limited ‘Analogue Pocket: Aluminium Edition’ which is said to be “precision cnc'd entirely in aluminium. With uncompromising attitude to quality. There has never been a handheld video game system like it.”

The Analogue Pocket was already a pretty pricey portable upon its release, costing $219.99. That said, this pales in comparison to the new limited editions, which will set you back an entire $499.99.

That said, there is no denying that the new aluminium Analogue Pocket will likely be at the upper echelon of premium portables – just as the regular Pocket was upon its release.

Those interested in this highly limited edition will be able to pre-order the aluminium Analogue Pocket in 4 different colours from the 15th of July – with the devices shipping just a few days later.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the original Analogue Pocket? Is the FPGA chip worth the premium price? Will the aluminium Pocket be too heavy? Let us know your thoughts down below.

The First Descendant has amassed 10 million players in its first week

The First Descendant is a free-to-play 3rd person co-op shooter in a similar vein to the likes of Warframe or Outriders. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game launched late last month to somewhat mixed reviews. Despite this, The First Descendant has attracted a great deal of interest – with over 10 million players checking out the game in its first week.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the team at NEXON revealed that “We've reached 10 million Descendants in just 7 days! Thank you all for your tremendous support and love. It means everything to us. We will do our best to bring you great experiences. Can't wait to continue this journey together!”

As mentioned, the game has been received with a somewhat mixed reception at launch, due partly to its monetisation and partly to the game’s relatively early state – having launched just under two weeks ago.

That said, with one hotfix already out and much more planned for the future, this could be just the beginning for The First Descendant.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the game so far? Is it worth your time? Could the game have staying power like Warframe? Let us know down below.

Terraria is now the 8th best-selling game of all time – surpassing Super Mario Bros

Terraria is a quiet titan. Ever since it was first released back in 2011 the game has not only continued to sell millions of units every year, but has even entered the esteemed list of the top 10 best-selling games of all time – with over 58 million copies sold.

Making the announcement on their forums via a ‘State of the Game’ post, the team at Re-Logic revealed that Terraria has sold over 10 million copies in the past year or so, saying:

“It has been quite some time since we gave an update on just how massive the Terraria fanbase has grown. This was somewhat by design, as we had our sights set on doing so once we passed a somewhat-obscure game about a plumber and his brother trying to save a princess from this dragon-turtle thing…”

They continued, “Thanks to the support of Terrarians everywhere, we are very proud to share that Terraria has surpassed 58 million units sold – 58.7m to be more exact, with nearly 32m from PC alone!”

As referenced by the team, with 58.7 million copies sold, Terraria is now the 8th best-selling video game of all time – having officially surpassed the original and iconic Super Mario Bros. for the NES.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Terraria’s success? When did you originally purchase the game? Will it reach the top 5 best-sellers eventually? Let us know down below.

Surfshark VPN review: Powerful protection and performance with few drawbacks

Surfshark VPN is a powerful, safe, and cost-effective way to protect your online data and life, with only minor drawbacks.

Surfshark's interface is similar across all devices for easy multi-platform use

Every computer that connects to the Internet has an Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is a unique number similar to a phone number. Everything a user does online uses these addresses to identify them and send them the right information.

If you use your cellphone to call your bank, they can use Caller ID to know it's you. However, your cell phone provider also knows you called the bank because they log your phone calls. It also knows when you call the pizza place for takeout and when you finally call your mom back.

Hunt: Showdown is getting a permanent price cut

Hunt: Showdown is one of the more successful extraction shooters currently around, with the Crytek-developed PvPvE shooter continuing to see support years on from its initial release back in 2019. In a surprising move, the team have announced that the game is set to get a permanent price cut, reducing its cost by up to 30%.

Making the announcement on their website, the team at Crytek revealed the upcoming price cut, saying: “Since its release, the price of Hunt has remained static to date and with the profound changes coming in the August launch, now is the right time to make adjustments.”

They continued, “Starting from 11th July on PC and from 15th August for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the price for the base game will be reduced globally. For some regions prices will drop by as much as 30%, while other regions may see a smaller decrease.”

In a welcome move, the price reduction will also impact the game’s DLC, meaning total cost for all of the game’s content will likely be even more accessible moving forward.

The team concluded by saying “With our upcoming August launch, which includes a new engine, map, numerous quality-of-life improvements and more, we hope to see the Hunt continue for many more years to come. With that goal, means a responsibility for us to constantly adapt to the market as it grows and changes. We will be closely monitoring the impact of these changes on our players going forward and will continue to adjust the prices further in the future if necessary.”

While games go on sale all the time, it is surprising to see a title receive a permanent price cut – especially as the game itself was never full-priced to begin with. Hopefully this does allow for Hunt: Showdown to remain successful for many years to come.

KitGuru says: Are you surprised by the price cut? Should more games follow suit? Let us know down below.

GAME UK will no longer accept pre-orders as retailer seemingly winds down business

Over the past year or so, we have seen the leading UK video games retailer GAME UK pull back on many of its previously-offered services, reducing the company’s scope drastically. Following the ending of its Reward program and trade-in services, GAME is now set to stop accepting pre-orders.

As reported by Eurogamer, from the 1st of August onwards, GAME UK will no longer be accepting in-store pre-orders, meaning you will only be able to utilise the company’s website to do so.

Additionally, those who are currently awaiting a pre-order will be disappointed to hear that any orders for products which are set to release after January 2025 will soon be refunded.

Eurogamer also revealed that this won’t be the only casualty in this latest shift, as the retailer’s GAME Wallet functionality will also soon be shut down – on the 21st of August to be specific.

With Game UK having shut down many of its physical stores, ending many of its popular programs, closing its trade-in service and now removing the ability to pre-order games in-store, it is clear that GAME UK is headed for some sort of major shift – if not a complete store closure. We likely won’t have to wait long to find out.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest move? Is GAME getting ready to shut down? Is there still a place for physical game stores in 2024? Let us know down below.

Concord’s beta will be available to all PS Plus members

Concord is the latest major gamble from Sony Interactive Entertainment, with the upcoming live-service Hero Shooter having a lot to prove in a market which isn’t exactly begging for more games in the genre. Perhaps as a way to entice more players to try out the upcoming game, Sony has now announced that the impending Concord Beta will be available for all PS Plus members – not just those who pre-ordered the title.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Alice Labrecque – the Communications Manager at Firewalk Studios – said:

“Before we head into both our Early Access and Open Beta weekends, we wanted to share some more important information with you like, when you can pre-download, when the servers go live, some goodies you can earn from participating, and more.”

Set to go live on the 12th of June until the 14th, the closed Concord beta was originally announced to be limited only to those who pre-ordered the title (though would include bonus beta codes to give away to friends etc…)

That said, the team have now revealed that all PS Plus players are privy to accessing the beta, saying: “we’re excited that PlayStation Plus is also inviting all members to participate in the Beta Early Access weekend. Just look for the option to download and play the beta when you boot up your PS5.”

Even if you do not have PS Plus however, you’ll still get a chance to try the game out, as an open beta will arrive shortly after – beginning on the 18th of July and concluding on the 21st.

While not a full-priced game, Concord still has an uphill battle to prove itself to wary players. As such, it makes a great deal of sense that Sony would want as many people playing the beta as possible. It’ll be interesting to see what the public think of Concord when the beta goes live later today.

KitGuru says: Are you looking forward to Concord’s beta? Will you be trying it out? Could it be the next Helldivers II? Let us know down below.

Xbox reportedly winding down console sales in EMEA regions

As a console platform, Xbox has historically focused on the US market, with Europe, Africa and Asia in particular being relatively weak markets for the US-based Microsoft. Following the recent announcement to changes with its Game Pass subscription service, Xbox is reportedly moving away from EMEA regions almost entirely.

As reported by The Verge, following the announcement of a new Xbox Game Pass tier – alongside the removal of day-one additions from lower tiers (as well as a price increase) – Microsoft looks set to refocus its Xbox plans on a global scale.

According to the report, Microsoft is heavily reducing its console marketing in EMEA regions (Europe, Middle East and Africa), instead choosing to “focus only on Game Pass, cloud gaming, PC, and Xbox controllers.”

With Xbox consoles as a whole selling fewer units than the company had hoped, and Xbox Game Pass growing at a slower rate than expected, it is interesting to see Microsoft choosing to double down on the latter service, no doubt aided by recent deals such as the addition of Game Pass streaming to Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks.

While Microsoft and Xbox are unlikely to be going anywhere any time soon, this latest strategy by the company does not offer much in the way of confidence.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this latest move? Is this an admittance of defeat? Will this shift work out in Xbox’s favour? Let us know down below.

Best monitor for MacBook Pro in 2024: best buys from Apple, Dell, LG & Samsung

Apple's computers are powerful tools with fantastic displays. If you need more real estate, though, we've rounded up the best monitor for your MacBook Pro, or any other Mac for that matter, updated in July 2024.

Multiple computer monitors displaying various vibrant scenes, including a gaming scene, abstract art, and a design software interface, set against a tiled background.
Some of the monitors you should consider getting for your MacBook Pro

While many believe the Mac or MacBook you use is the biggest part of a person's computing experience, the display is the main human interface surface for that computer. At least with a MacBook you get a built-in display — you don't have that with a Mac mini, Mac Studio or Mac Pro.

Some people prefer larger displays so they can see everything they need to work on, or have one monitor for Mail and Safari, and another for photo and video editing. Others may want wider displays instead of having two monitors on their desk. And, like some of our staffers with a desktop Mac Studio, extra monitors in portrait orientation are great for feeds, coding, and more.

Game Pass Cloud streaming officially available on Amazon Fire TV

Last month, Amazon announced a partnership with Microsoft/Xbox to bring Game Pass to its Fire TV Sticks via cloud streaming. Said to be coming some time in July, the Xbox Game Pass app is now officially available.

Following the announcement last month that the Xbox Game Pass app would be coming to Amazon’s latest Fire TV sticks (2023’s 4K and 4K Max models) sometime this month, the official Game Pass app is now available.

As mentioned, given the relatively weak power of the Fire TV Stick, it is only able to access Game Pass via streaming, and so expect varying results depending on your internet / region.

The Fire TV app marks the second partnership of its kind with regards to Game Pass, as the application has been available on modern Samsung TVs for quite some time.

With Microsoft cancelling its previous plans for a cloud-based console, expanding its Game Pass app to as many different smart hubs as possible makes a great deal of sense.

VR Games Showcase announced

While virtual reality may not have blown up in the way some companies were hoping, VR still has a strong audience of dedicated users. With a decreasing number of VR games being represented in major video game showcases, a new dedicated VR Games showcase has now sprung up.

Being organised by Jamie Feltham, former employee at UploadVR and Fast Travel games, the upcoming VR Games Showcase is set to take place on the 15th of August at 5pm UK time “featuring massive new game announcements and first-looks from some of your favourite VR studios. Including titles for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR headsets.”

While we have yet to get a full list of partners set to be present at the showcase, the team did confirm that over 15 titles will be shown off, including:

  • Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded
  • Announcements From Flat2VR Studios
  • New Titles From The Developers of Ghosts of Tabor
  • What’s Next From Vertigo, nDreams & More

Discussing their intentions with this showcase, Feltham claimed “With the VR Games Showcase, we want to capture the magic of a Nintendo Direct or Xbox Showcase and deliver a major moment for VR gaming.”

They continued, “You can expect surprise announcements you didn’t see coming, gameplay deep dives for staple releases, and innovative experiences not possible in any other medium. Whether you have a Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, or PC VR headset, or you just want to see a fantastic gaming showcase with major announcements, you won’t want to miss this.”

SCUF announces NOMAD Bluetooth iPhone controller

SCUF is one of the biggest names when it comes to producing high-end 3rd party video game console controllers, with the manufacturer giving PlayStation and Xbox users the option for backpaddles and more far ahead of any official console offerings. SCUF now looks set to tackle the mobile gaming market, announcing the NOMAD Bluetooth iPhone controller.

Available in black or white and retailing for £99.99, the SCUF NOMAD is a Bluetooth 5.0 powered iPhone controller which is said to bring “your favourite features to a fully mobile experience.”

Such features include customisable rear paddles; improved ergonomics with full-sized grips; hall effect thumbsticks for reduced drift; and a bespoke SCUF app for increased customisation.

Beyond this, the Bluetooth-enabled controller is said to have a 16 hour battery life on full charge as well as a design which allows for maximum phone case compatibility.

Despite being a Bluetooth controller, the SCUF NOMAD is currently only compatible with iPhones running iOS 16 and later. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an Android version announced sooner rather than later.

Deadpool & Wolverine to crossover with Fortnite and MWIII

Deadpool and Wolverine is the next major film set to come out of Marvel Studios, with the MCU entry being one of the most hyped in a while. Aligning with the film’s upcoming release, it appears as though the X-Men characters are set to make appearances across multiple games.

As reported by IGN, Call of Duty dataminers have discovered files which seem to hint at an upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine crossover coming to Modern Warfare III and the free-to-play Warzone. With the game’s 5th season beginning on the 24th of July and the film set to premiere on the 26th, the timing does work out quite nicely.

Deadpool and Wolverine appear to be sharing the love, as according to known Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR, recent meetings between Deadpool’s Ryan Renolds, Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman and a number of Fortnite content creators seem to suggest that Epic Game’s behemoth battle royale will likely also be getting some sort of crossover – nothing new for Marvel and Fortnite.

As mentioned, Deadpool & Wolverine is a major release for Disney/Marvel, and so it makes sense that they are doing all they can to attract as wide an audience as possible.

Whistleblower claims to have nearly died because of illegal chemical exposure from Apple

An ex-employee has accused Apple of exposing her to gaseous organic chemicals from a secret chip fabrication plant located near her home.

Apple fired whistleblower Ashley Gjovik in September 2021, accusing her of leaking its intellectual property. At the time, Gjovik claimed that this was the result of retaliation by Apple against people who had spoken out in the #AppleToo movement.

Also in 2021, she claimed that the Apple building where her office was situated, was built on a Superfund site. This is a previously-contaminated area, and Gjovik reported Apple to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
