Nagelsmann condemns survey asking if German team has enough white players

The Germany head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has said he is shocked that a public broadcaster asked survey participants if they would prefer more white players in the national football team.

Nagelsmann has agreed with midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who said on Saturday that the survey for German state broadcaster ARD was “absolutely racist” and that it was “madness for a public broadcaster to ask such a question”.

Wichanee Meechai has a share of the three-way lead at the US Women’s Open, and every reason to feel out of place at the top of a crowded leaderboard.

The 31-year-old from Thailand, currently ranked 158th in the world, is tied at five-under-par through three rounds with the two-times major winner Minjee Lee of Australia, and the world No 17 and Stanford alum Andrea Lee.

Sydney drenched by month’s worth of rain in less than a day

City saw 143mm of rain on first day of winter – more than the June average of 132mm

Sydney has been inundated with more than a month’s rain in less than a day while storms along Australia’s west coast have sparked hundreds of emergency calls.

Persistent, moderate-to-heavy rain on Saturday drenched Sydney with 143mm of rain, topping the city’s June average of 132mm on the first day of winter, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Rose Bay recorded more than 170mm.

Florida Panthers oust New York Rangers to book return trip to Stanley Cup final

The Prince of Wales Trophy was carried onto the ice when time expired, as an arena filled with Florida Panthers fans roared in delight and dozens of players and staffers rushed over to pose with the prize.

Last year, the Panthers defied tradition and touched the trophy.

Students walk out of University of Chicago graduation over Israel policies

Pro-Palestinian students staged the walkout as school withheld degrees of four seniors pending disciplinary review over protests

Dozens of students protesting Israel’s ongoing military strikes in Gaza walked out of the University of Chicago’s commencement on Saturday as the school withheld the diplomas of four seniors over their involvement with a pro-Palestinian encampment.

The disruption to the rainy two-hour outdoor ceremony was brief, with shouts, boos and calls to “stop genocide”. A crowd of students walked out in between speeches and a demonstration followed the official ceremony. Some chanted as they held Palestinian flags while others donned traditional keffiyehs, black-and-white checkered scarves that represent Palestinian solidarity, over their robes.

Rescue crews will work through the night in Waikanda Crescent in Whalan, where the building was levelled after an explosion

Rescue crews will search through the night for a survivor feared trapped in the ruins of a townhouse that collapsed after an explosion in Sydney.

The blast on Waikanda Crescent in Whalan in the west of the city levelled most of the two-storey home just before 1pm on Saturday, blowing out windows and damaging a neighbouring house.

José Mourinho returns to football as new Fenerbahce head coach

  • Manager to be unveiled at club’s stadium on Sunday night
  • Mourinho has been out of job since leaving Roma in January

José Mourinho is returning to football with Fenerbahce, after the Turkish club announced his appointment as manager on Sunday.

The Portuguese coach had opened talks with the Istanbul giants on Saturday over replacing Ismail Kartal, and appears to have quickly reached an agreement. Mourinho will be unveiled at a ceremony at the club’s Sukru Saracoglu stadium on Sunday evening.

Tin Oo, NLD founder with Aung San Suu Kyi, dies aged 97 in Myanmar

Former armed forces chief was imprisoned after failed revolt against junta and later campaigned with Nobel laureate under National League for Democracy banner

Tin Oo, one of the closest associates of Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and co-founder with her of the National League for Democracy, has died at the age of 97.

Tin Oo died on Saturday morning at Yangon general hospital, said Moh Khan, a charity worker citing a family member. Charity workers in Myanmar handle funeral arrangements.
