Various Apple devices surround large white text reading 2025 on a gray background, including phones, tablets, a laptop, a speaker, and an AirTag.
Apple has a busy 2025 ahead

It doesn't seem like there will be many surprises in 2025 as Apple bumps chipsets and releases updated versions of old products, but there's at least one device that could surprise us early in the year.

How We Work - How caffeine & tech fuel Andrew O'Hara's video workflow

Here's how a mountain of tech products come together to help AppleInsider's Andrew O'Hara keep up with the demanding and growing needs of Apple-focused video production.

Closed laptop with Apple logo, red portable media player, red and gray external boxes, and various electronic devices on a white surface.
There's a lot of gear that goes into the video workflow

Here at AppleInsider, most of my work revolves around our video production as well as covering the occasional news and writing reviews. Most of my time is spent in the production studio, but I'm bad at staying put.

I'm always moving around, which dictates which kind of gear I use. For example, while I drool over the New Mac mini or even the yet-to-be-updated Mac Studio, I use an M3 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro due to its portability.

M4 Mac owners having problems with ultrawide 5K monitors

An unknown number of users say that their M4 Macs are failing to show the correct resolution for their 5K ultrawide monitors, leaving displays either blurry or too small to read.

The M4 Pro Mac mini

The problem is less dramatic than how the M4 iPad Pro was being bricked for some users when they updated to iPadOS 18. In this case, it's another M4 problem but the issue is over what resolution the display is shown at.

According to multiple users on Apple's support forums, the issue is specifically with monitors that have a resolution of 5,120 pixels by 2,160 pixels. With high-resolution monitors, Apple scales macOS using a feature it calls high-pixel density mode (HiDPI), which prevents interface elements like windows and menus becoming so small as to be unreadable.

Both the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD can run virtual private networks (VPNs) so long as they are running tvOS 17 or later. The VPN service setup and connection work similarly to how it does on Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Surfshark is a trustworthy VPN provider that offers its app on the Apple TV App Store. Unlike scammy free VPNs that likely do more harm than good, Surfshark is a paid service that doesn't monetize user data.

Previous reports have said that the iPhone SE 4 will remain a sub-$500 device, but now a regular leaker claims that a Japanese news service has confirmed it.

"The information about the shipping price of the Apple iPhone SE 4th generation model has come out again [via a] Japanese news agency channel," writes yeux1122 on his or her blog. "It's a Japanese source with Apple's own chip, etc., 500 dollars or less."

How we Work: Wes Hilliard's Apple Vision Pro & iPad Pro-centric workflows

Wesley is back to being a full-time iPad Pro user, but there's a splash of Apple Vision Pro and a mountain of other tech involved in the day-to-day. Here's how he gets work done at AppleInsider.

If there's one thing I like writing about, it's my setup and workflows. There's a lot going on here, and unless you're new here, you might already know I'm all in on iPad and a little obsessed with Apple Vision Pro.

My setup and workflows don't reflect the rest of my colleagues, and that's fine. I'm happy that I get to figure out new and interesting ways to tackle problems that might otherwise be solved by simply using a Mac.

New Magic Mouse may listen for voice commands

A shaky rumor claims that Apple is prototyping a new Magic Mouse design for the Mac that's more ergonomic — but which users will also be able to talk to.

It was back in 1986's "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" where Scotty picked up a Macintosh mouse and tried speaking into it. In 2026, goes the new rumor, that could happen for real.

This new claim follows a previous one that said a more ergonomic Magic Mouse 2 would be released in 2026, probably including moving the USB-C charging port from the bottom. Leaker yeux1122 agrees with all of that, but adds (in translation) that the design will fit "modern computing [needs] with a mixture of touch screen, voice command, and hand movement."

What's best to watch on Apple TV+ during the upcoming free weekend [u]

Apple TV+ is going free for one weekend because it lacks viewers — but it is far from lacking in absolutely superb shows to watch. Here's what to see first, and just why Apple is doing this.

Apple is cutting down on blockbuster movie theater releases and one impact is that the profile of its Apple TV service will be lower. Since the service consistently has only a small fraction of the audience that Netflix and Disney+ get, Apple has been working to get it in front of more people.

ProMotion displays rumored to be on all iPhone 17 models

Apple introduced ProMotion with the iPad Pro in 2017, dramatically improving how the screen kept up with Apple Pencil use. ProMotion can raise the display refresh rate to 120Hz where needed, and drop it to save battery power when showing static images.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station on Chinese social media site Weibo, the feature will come to the regular iPhone 17 and expected iPhone 17 Slim in 2025. That's eight years since it debuted on the iPad Pro, and four since it first appeared on the iPhone with the iPhone 13 Pro.

Working at a desk for long periods can be harmful for your health, without the proper equipment. Many people really should be looking into making their computing environment more ergonomic, reducing the chance of aches and pains from prolonged use.

When it comes to keyboards, there are a few options, but one of the more recognizable ergonomic ways is to use a wavy keyboard. One where the keys aren't in straight lines, and are at varied heights too to match your hand's resting positions.

How we work: How Andrew Orr's MacBook Air, iPhone 16 & Beats Pill keeps him going

My day starts and ends at my M3 MacBook Air. I had a MacBook Pro in the past but I really missed the thinness and lightness of the Air. It's thin and light enough to carry everywhere, whether I'm at my desk or on the couch answering emails.

Flexbar review: Could be the heir-apparent to the Touch Bar, someday

The Flexbar is a replacement for Apple's Touch Bar that could give the Stream Deck a run for its money — assuming the software is fully hammered into shape at some point.

Flexbar review: Designed to be near the keyboard and your fingers

The Touch Bar was an element of the MacBook Pro keyboard that offered the promise of productivity. By giving users the ability to touch a row of context-aware buttons that performed shortcuts or changed settings, they could potentially do more without needing to navigate menus or remember key combinations.

While the component had potential, it was often derided and was eventually replaced by a row of physical function keys, following the death of the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

A small smattering of my tech gear

At this point, I'm pretty sure I've earned my reputation as the most tech-critical member of the AppleInsider staff through countless other pieces I've written. I'm sure that'll also be reflected here.

iPad mini 7 two-month review: Now I get it

Two months of usage later, the iPad mini 7 is still a great compact media and gaming tablet, though there are certainly some areas for improvement.

iPad mini 7 two-month review: The iPad mini isn't perfect, but it might still be the best iPad for you.

I owned the very first Retina iPad mini way back in 2014, but it was only ever a Netflix machine for me. With the release of the new seventh-generation model that's all changed, and it might just be the defacto iPad from here on out.

The new 2024 iPad mini is the smallest tablet in a lineup dominated by superfast, super-big tablets. But after spending a few weeks with the new A17 Pro-powered, I think I finally get why you should buy one.
