Every Intel Mac mini is now obsolete or vintage, and will be missed

It's the end of an era as the much-loved 2018 Intel Mac mini has been added to Apple's list of vintage products. It's yet another step heralding the end of support of Intel on Mac.

The 2018 Mac mini was the last to use an Intel processor, and it's now officially a vintage product

With some exceptions under international law, Apple has long had a specific process for when it deems devices to be first vintage, and then obsolete. What's significant now is that every Intel-based Mac mini has entered the vintage stage, the first time since the move from Intel to Apple Silicon back in 2020.

"Products are considered vintage when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 5 and less than 7 years ago," says Apple on its support page. "[And] obsolete when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago."

Online risks will escalate as the global security vulnerability database gets defunded

The U.S. government has cut its funding of the CVE database, used to track security vulnerabilities in operating systems and software. It's a change that will make it harder for Apple to monitor and fix software issues.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database is an important part of modern cyber security. It's a central database of vulnerabilities found in operating systems and applications, which can be abused by hackers and malware to attack targets in various ways.

On Tuesday, the defense non-profit MITRE Corporation said its funding to maintain the CVE database will expire on Wednesday. At the same time, the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) program will also lose its funding.

Trump has not raised big tech China tariffs to 245 percent

Despite scaremongering headlines, Trump did not escalate his "reciprocal" China tariff to 245% on Tuesday night. The figure is a reinstatement of previous tariffs that don't apply to Apple or big tech at all.

Coming on top of previous escalations and the Apple exemption that Trump says isn't an exemption, it wouldn't have been surprising if the China tariff rose again. And the White House itself stoked fear-mongering by how it phrased the tariffs in a fact sheet issued late on Tuesday night, April 15, 2025.

"China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States," says the fact sheet, "as a result of its retaliatory actions."

Apple TV+ hit show Mythic Quest is coming to an end.

The show originally debuted in February 2020, with the fourth season finale having aired on March 26, 2025. The cancellation was apparently revealed to the cast and crew sometime after the original season finale was completed.

"Endings are hard, but after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close," the show's executive producers — including star Rob McElhenny - told industry paper Variety. "Because endings are hard, with Apple's blessing we made one final update to our last episode — so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over."

The exclusions published near midnight eastern time grant exemptions to products that would take years to develop in the US. Apple is greatly helped by the exemptions, with much of Apple's product line now exempt from the 145% tariff applied.

Almost the entirety of Apple's product line is now exempt from the enhanced tariffs. Computers, smartphones, monitors, flash memory, DRAM, and other storage like hard drives are exempt for the time being.

The company's limited edition product retains all the functionality of the standard Apple Pencil Pro, only in a new design that undoubtedly evokes nostalgia. The "Apple Crayon Pro" accurately imitates the wrapper of genuine crayons, and it even features a colored tip to match. If it wasn't for the word "Crayon" on the side, you might almost think it's an actual Crayola product.

Apple shares did well on Friday after a rough week

This week has been a tough one for Apple investors, due to the continued alterations to how the United States applies tariffs against imports from other countries. The stock market doesn't do well with uncertainty, and the various changes dictated by President Trump certainly introduced some.

After Thursday's return to a slump, Apple ended that day on $190.42, with pre-market movements resulting in Apple opening at $186.10. While the stock did go down a little to $186.06 early on, it rapidly climbed and reached a high of $199.54 during the day, and ended the session at $198.15.

The managerial style of Steve Jobs can be described by some as abrasive, and strong-willed by others, during his time at Apple. It's also something that was apparent during his time at Pixar, with stories from Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, which had Steve as a majority shareholder.

In an interview about Jobs for the Steve Jobs Archive released on Friday, Catmull and guests discussed the Apple co-founder's managerial style.

Apple hampered its Siri ambitions by penny-pinching

If Apple isn't able to get its Siri improvements out with iOS 19 in the fall, a new report tries to put the blame on early cost-cutting decisions by CFO Luca Maestri.

Apple Intelligence delays are all ex-CFO Luca Maestri's fault, apparently

First it was that Apple is years behind the rest of the industry in AI, then it was that Apple management can't cope. Now according to the New York Times, the reason Apple Intelligence is failing is because Apple was too miserly to spend some cash years ago.

Specifically, the claim is that in 2023, the then-chief financial officer Luca Maestri halved a budget that engineers had wanted for buying GPU processors for AI development work. It doesn't matter that Apple is often the most highly valued firm in the world, you don't get to be CFO of it if you're not in absolute control of spending.

In a statement released by China's State Council Tariff Commission, spotted by Bloomberg, China has declared that it will raise tariffs from 84% to 125%. It then said that because of the prohibitively high tariff level, there is no market for American goods.

The Indonesian Apple Store site just lists the devices as available and makes no mention of them ever having been banned. But Senior Vice President Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak took to Twitter to mark the occasion.

Pages for iPad explained -- how to get the most out of Apple's word processing power house

Apple's Pages never gets the praise it should, but it's especially unfairly ignored on the iPad where in truth it is an exceptionally easy to use pro writing app.

Pages on the iPad

Whether it's on the Mac or the iPad, you shouldn't be using Pages to make notes. That would be like using a Lear Jet to get you to the end of your drive.

Only, if the Mac version hides away its features, the iPad one arguably likes to force you to dig even further for what you need. It's the same idea of not getting in the way of your writing, but keeping Pages simple while you work by touch sometimes means features are several taps away.

Beating the storage limits of an iPhone or iPad can be done in two ways. You can use cloud storage, or your can attach an external storage device.

All the second option requires is an external drive with a USB-C connection that can plug into an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. However, typical external drives take up space, and aren't great for carrying around.

US iPhone production's main challenge is a century of big business labor decisions

Apple's high storage prices may be key to mitigating iPhone 17 Pro price rises

Investment firm Morgan Stanley theorizes that Apple has long-term options to protect its iPhone 17 Pro prices from tariff hikes, including steering buyers to larger storage capacities, which have a greater profit margin.

Even though Trump has now paused many tariffs, and even though it's become possible that Apple will get an exemption, the company won't be betting on that. Doubtlessly Apple will take any exemption it can get, but it also knows Trump changes his mind on a whim, so it will be looking to long game.

That's the opinion of analysts at Morgan Stanley, in a new note to investors seen by AppleInsider. They even see a route through the tariff turbulence that could see it able to keep its iPhone prices at the same level as before.

In March, Apple admitted that its attempt to make Siri more personalized and up to date was far behind schedule. It confirmed that there were delays in getting Siri to the state where the company wanted it to be, and that it would be sorted out in the coming year.

Since that rare admittance from Apple, the company has done what it can to fix the situation. This included a managerial reshuffle, pushing John Giannandrea out of the top Siri role in favor of Mike Rockwell.

A new rumor claims the Apple Watch will gain support for Apple Intelligence, along with a visionOS-inspired design.

For well over a year, we've heard all sorts of rumors saying the iPhone operating system would take stylistic cues from visionOS. Now, a report publication The Verifier, spotted by MacRumors, claims that watchOS 12 will receive the same visual treatment. The Apple Watch will reportedly contain user interface elements heavily inspired by the Apple Vision Pro operating system, with semi-transparent and revamped menus, icons, and more.
