iPhone 20, CarPlay Ultra, and new Accessibility on the AppleInsider Podcast

CarPlay Ultra is finally here, really tremendous accessibility features have been announced, and there are rumors of the iPhone 18, iPhone 19, and iPhone 20, all on this week's episode of the AppleInsider Podcast.

Just as we hit that peak time of rumors about the next iPhone — and, this week, also the next, and the next — Apple goes and surprises us with CarPlay Ultra. Previously known as CarPlay 2, the issue here is that "previously" now means a very long time ago.

Or maybe the issue is not that Apple is at least 18 months late with this, but instead it's that CarPlay 2 will never been seen by the enormous majority of Apple users. That's because of the sheer cost of it — CarPlay is free, but the Aston Martin car you have to buy to run it, is not.

Announced on May 15, Sony's WH-1000XM6 are premium over-ear headphones with ANC, which improves upon its predecessor. Here's how they compare to Apple's AirPods Max.

The premium headphone market has a few companies at the top, and Sony is one of them. Its headphone heritage is extensive, with its XM4 offering good quality at a price $200 cheaper than the AirPods Max.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 were a revision that more directly competed with the AirPods Max, and was very well received in 2022. Now, Sony has continued the line with the WH-1000XM6, this time boasting highly improved active noise cancellation.

After its first submission of "Fortnite" to the App Store was allegedly ignored by Apple, Epic Games has announced that the game has now been blocked. It will seemingly not be returning to the US App Store, and Apple has reportedly removed it from the European one, despite previously being forced to allow it.

Apple has blocked our Fortnite submission so we cannot release to the US App Store or to the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. Now, sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it.

What did we do before tabs? And now you can automatically share them across your devices

This is specifically about what are called iCloud tabs — and they are not the same as Tab Groups. If you use Tab Groups in Safari on one Apple device, the feature is on with the same tabs on all your devices.

In theory, iCloud tabs is always on too, but you have to dig further to find it, and you have to make sure that it is enabled.

Apple tops global brand rankings again -- by a giant margin

Apple has once again claimed the top spot as the world's most valuable brand, with Kantar estimating its worth at a staggering $1.29 trillion— 12% of the value of the entire top 100 list.

According to Kantar's 20th annual BrandZ report, Apple remains the most valuable brand for the fourth year running. Kantar has assigned a somewhat nebulous brand-only dollar amount of nearly $1.3 trillion — roughly 28% growth year-over-year.

Rounding out the top five were the usual suspects. The 2025 rankings are as follows:

AirPods Pro 3 are in the works, Apple's own software leaks

Apple's AirPods Pro are expected to receive a hardware upgrade later in 2025, and now Apple's own software suggests a new model is close.

A recent Apple software update indicates that the AirPods Pro 3 could debut soon.

The original AirPods Pro were released back in 2019. The first meaningful upgrade arrived two years later in 2022, when the earbuds gained Find My support along with improved ANC. In 2023, the AirPods Pro received a USB-C connector in place of Lightning, as well as lossless audio support for Apple Vision Pro users.

The next major upgrade to the AirPods Pro is set to debut within a few months. A recent leak, derived from one of Apple's software releases, seemingly confirms that Apple is working on an entirely new model.

Hitting the streets at least five months late, Apple's next-generation CarPlay experience that it is calling "CarPlay Ultra" will start arriving in Aston Martin cars in the next few weeks.

Apple first gave a sneak-peek at the next-generation CarPlay experience in 2022. At the time, it said that it would land on vehicles by the end of 2024.

What Apple showed was nothing less than the complete takeover of a car's entire dashboard by CarPlay. Instead of being confined to a square-ish screen that shows a few apps, CarPlay Ultra runs everything.

Apple's iPhone sales in China have dropped considerably, with shipments of non-Chinese smartphone brands down almost 50% year-on-year in March.

China is an important market for Apple, besides being its largest manufacturing center. However, it seems that Apple's sales struggle in the country is far from ending, according to recently released shipment figures.

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) seen by DigiTimes covers smartphone shipments in March 2025. It revealed that there was an overall year-on-year increase in smartphone shipments of 6.5%.

Foxconn gets new factory approval as India courts further Apple expansion

India's government is investing in a new Foxconn semiconductor facility, which it hopes will ultimately see the country making chips for Apple.

As Trump criticizes Apple for Foxconn's manufacturing the iPhone in India, the supplier has secured government approval for a new semiconductor plant there. Foxconn is already planning to double iPhone production in India by the end of 2025, but now it's going to expand manufacturing of display drivers for smartphones and other consumer electronics.

According to CNBC, the approval is for a joint venture between Foxconn and the HCL Group. The approval comes with an investment by the government of $433 million, though it is not clear what the total cost of the factory will be.

New Apple Music migration tool helps users shift away from Spotify

Apple is rolling out its tool for migrating from other streaming music services to Apple Music, allowing users to retain their library and playlist archives.

In February, a tool was being beta-tested by Apple to help users shift from other streaming services to Apple Music. That tool is now rolling out to users, allowing them to more easily migrate to Apple Music from elsewhere, such as Spotify.

Apple's support page says that the system is available for users of Apple Music in Australia and New Zealand. This seems like the initial steps of a global rollout, with it expected to spread to other regions soon.

Apple tests EU by adding scare screens to apps using third-party payments [u]

European Union App Store users are being shown warnings in the App Store about apps that let users make payments directly to developers — despite this being a clear violation of the Digital Markets Act.

Apple has already been fined $570 million for anticompetitive practices under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), although it is appealing. Now it at least appears to be asking for a further fine, because it has added warnings expressly designed to dissuade users from buying apps with alternative payment processes.

It's actually in the recent US ruling that Apple was explicitly forbidden to use what are called "scare screens". The EU has not as yet ruled against that specific technique, although in March 2024 it was alerted to Apple's plans by rivals including Epic Games.

Nonetheless, the EU has focused on Apple's alleged anticompetitive practices. In its announcement of its ruling in April 2025, the EU said that it "ordered Apple to remove the technical and commercial restrictions on steering and to refrain from perpetuating the non-compliant conduct in the future, which includes adopting conduct with an equivalent object or effect."

iPhone Fold rumored to get both under-screen and hole-punch cameras

The iPhone Fold is rumored to have two different types of camera tech for its folding and external displays, as well as have a Touch ID implementation under the screen for biometric authentication.

The iPhone Fold is an engineering challenge for Apple, and it wants to present its large folding display as perfectly as possible to users. As part of its attempts to do so, it will try to avoid adding distracting elements to the screen, by taking one bit out of view.

According to Thursday's Weibo post by leaker "Digital Chat Station," the large internal display of the iPhone Fold will use "under-screen camera technology." The smaller external-facing display will use a more conventional hole-punch camera.

Trump has a problem with Tim Cook, because Foxconn is building factories in India

President Trump says he has a "little problem with Tim Cook," apparently because Foxconn — a company that Cook is not the CEO of — has been expanding factories in India for years.

Tim Cook has famously handled Trump better than many or most business CEOs, which resulted in him getting Apple a crucial exemption in the first tariffs, and then at least temporary ones in the new "reciporcal" tariffs. But now Trump is saying Apple's suppliers need to come through on manufacturing in the US, and that the announced $500 billion plan isn't enough.

"I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday," Trump said to press on May 15, 2025, according to CNBC. "I said to him, 'my friend, I treated you very good. You're coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you're building all over India.' I don't want you building in India."

A recent claim on LinkedIn alleges that a database containing 89 million Steam account records, including one-time passcodes (OTPs) used for two-factor authentication (2FA), is up for sale. The asking price is $5,000, a low figure for a leak of this scale.

But despite the headline-grabbing figure and some reposts online, the evidence supporting this leak was outright fabricated. Fortunately, Apple users can take advantage of the built-in Passwords app, which now supports two-factor codes across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Epic resubmits 'Fortnite' to the App Store for review, as its initial request seemingly ignored

Epic Games has once again submitted "Fortnite" to the U.S. App Store for review, after Apple seemingly ignored its previous submission for five days.

On May 9, after announcing its intentions a few days prior, Epic Games tried to get Fortnite back on the App Store by submitting the game for review. While most applications typically get reviewed within 24 hours, this was not the case with Fortnite. Instead, there were no developments in regards to the game's review process for more than 120 hours, or five days.

Given that its request went unanswered for such a long time, Epic Games understandably decided to cancel its initial request for a review. Fortnite leaker Shiima revealed that Epic has submitted a second review request, with the company's CEO Tim Sweeney later confirming the details himself, MacRumors notes.

An update to Apple Maps will help users find fine-dining restaurants, with the ability to search for Michelin-starred, Green Star, and Bib Gourmand restaurants.

Users of Apple Maps and other navigation tools often use the apps to find somewhere to eat. With an update to Apple Maps, it'll be easier to find some of the more upper-class establishments.

Starting from May 14, Apple Maps in the United States adds the ability to view rankings and suggestions from food experts. Restaurants that have earned the revered Michelin star, or are reviewed under Green Star or Bib Gorumand, will now have details about their rankings appearing on their Apple Maps listings.

Apple's gearing up for WWDC 2025, and the company's Apple Developer application has been updated as part of the preparations.

Apple has updated its Developer app ahead of WWDC 2025.

On Wednesday, the iPhone maker released an update for its official Developer app. Aside from bug fixes and "various enhancements," the updated application will offer access to WWDC 2025 videos and consultations, as well as a new assortment of WWDC-related stickers.

Apple's next annual Worldwide Developer Conference is set to begin with a keynote video on June 9, 2025. It's where the company will update its next-generation operating systems, namely iOS 19, macOS 16, visionOS 3, and watchOS 12, among others.

Owners of the Apple Vision Pro will soon have the option of scrolling through apps using their eyes, without lifting a finger.

The Apple Vision Pro primarily uses hand gestures as its control scheme, with users able to select items and make changes with a movement of the fingers. It seems Apple's making it possible to do some things without needing gestures at all.

According to Bloomberg on Wednesday, Apple is working on a feature that builds upon the existing eye-tracking functionality of the Apple Vision Pro. Allegedly being tested for possible inclusion in visionOS 3, it will let users move around the app simply by looking around.

Since its small beginnings in 1983 and right up to the current slick video presentations, WWDC has been where Apple has made so many major announcements — and sometimes they were so major they were turning points for the company.

To be clear, the biggest single turning point for Apple must be the launch of the iPhone, and that didn't happen at WWDC. Nor did the iPod before it. Nor the 1998 iMac that saved the company.

But apart from that... While WWDC has not always been so important to Apple's future — and while it wasn't always called the Worldwide Developers Conference — it has become so. Chiefly because it is a WWDC that so many Apple-changing announcements were made.

Apple inches up share of direct iPhone sales but carriers dominate the field

Apple continues to gradually expand its direct iPhone sales to consumers, but most U.S. buyers still get their devices through carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Mobile carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile accounted for 75% of iPhone sales in the U.S. as of late 2023, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Apple's own retail stores and website made up 15%, with the remaining share held by big-box retailers like Best Buy and Target.

Chinese resellers offer steep discounts on iPhone 16 to counter falling sales

As iPhone sales in China continue to decline, two of the country's biggest online retailers are offering discounts of up to $350 on certain models.

Four smartphones display their backs, featuring differently colored finishes: beige, white, blue, and green. The first two have triple cameras, and the latter two have dual cameras.

While sales are rare in the US, to say the least, Apple or local resellers have regularly offered iPhone discounts in China. It will be because iPhone sales continue to decline in the country, but also because China has key shopping seasons, including "618" in June.

Ahead of this year's "618" shopping season, Reuters reports that two of China's biggest online resellers have launched promotional offers on the iPhone 16 range. Such sales are now an annual fixture in China, but reportedly this time the discounts are particularly high.

Under-display Face ID is one of those rumors that started the minute the technology arrived and has been repeated frequently, even recently. The dreaded notch followed by the compromise that was the Dynamic Island both exist as a result of Face ID needing screen space.

According to former Display Supply Chain CEO, current VP of Counterpoint Research, Ross Young, Apple is set to put Face ID components under the display with iPhone 18 Pro in 2026. The information was shared via a social media post about a business conference.

PayPal users in Germany say they can now complete contactless payments via iPhone, as Apple was forced to open up its NFC technology to third parties in the European Union.

PayPal has made its contactless payment feature available to iPhone users in Germany.

Before the EU's Digital Markets Act went into effect, contactless payments on iPhone were only available through Apple Pay. The company's NFC technology remained exclusive to its payment service until January 2024, when Apple was required to grant third-party companies access to the same NFC chip used for Apple Pay.

Norwegian company Vipps MobilePay was the first in the region to implement contactless payments on iPhone, back in December 2024, and now it appears as though PayPal is following suit, though only in Germany. According to the website iPhone-Ticker.de, PayPal's "Tap to Pay" feature is now available on iPhones in Germany.

In a profile of Apple's work in the field, the Wall Street Journal profiled on Tuesday about its explorations in the field with startup Synchron. While Apple provides devices that could be controlled, Synchron creates the Stentrode implant that works as a brain computer interface.

Forget that it's Apple who runs the App Store. Certainly, it is important that it's Apple, since that company is surely the most scrutinized in the world, but what's more important is that the App Store is run by one single company.

With one firm, you may agree or disagree with its rules and its prices, but at least it is one single set of terms and conditions for you to ignore. You're not signing up to countless different stores, you're not giving your credit card details to countless different companies.
