Lexar unveils new flagship NM990 PCIe 5.0 SSD
Lexar is seeking a share of the high-end consumer storage market with the announcement of its new flagship SSD, the NM990. Aimed at hardcore gamers, content creators, and AI developers, the new drive promises to deliver blistering speeds that leverage the full potential of the PCIe 5.0 interface.
Harnessing next-generation technology, the NM990 boasts impressive performance figures. Lexar claims the drive can achieve sequential read speeds of up to 14,000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 11,000MB/s, effectively doubling the performance of many standard Gen 4 SSDs. This raw throughput is complemented by equally high random-access performance, with a DRAM cache and dynamic SLC cache helping to deliver up to 2 million IOPS for random reads and 1.5 million for random writes.
Under the hood, the NM990 is powered by an 8-channel controller. Lexar is also highlighting its ‘Thermal Defender Technology', which, when combined with a graphite heat dissipation decal, is said to improve power consumption management by up to 23%. This focus on efficiency should help maintain smooth and consistent performance without succumbing to thermal throttling during demanding workloads.
Durability looks to be a key focus, with the 4TB model rated for an endurance of up to 3000 terabytes written (TBW), ensuring reliability for users who frequently handle large files. The drive also fully supports Microsoft's DirectStorage API, which is crucial for enabling the near-instant load times promised in next-generation games. For maintenance, users can utilise the Lexar DiskMaster software to monitor the drive's health and perform firmware updates. The Lexar NM990 M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD will be available in capacities ranging from 1TB up to 4TB.
