Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Review – Slightly Creased Charm

Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door

It seemed like we’d never see another game like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. While there have been plenty of Paper Mario games over the past couple of decades, Nintendo has intentionally steered the series away from the RPG mechanics, original characters, and sharp-edged humor it was initially known for. As a result, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has taken on a certain symbolic importance to some spurned fans even though it wasn’t a particularly big hit in its day. Needless to say, it came as a bit of a shock when Nintendo announced a full remake of the game […]

Endless Ocean Luminous Review – Soothing Yet Shallow Waters

Endless Ocean Luminous

With the Switch slowly winding down, Nintendo has been looking to tide hardcore fans over by diving deep into its back catalog to resurface long-neglected franchises like Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Advance Wars, and Another Code, but Endless Ocean may be the most unexpected revival yet. Beginning on the Wii as a perhaps over-literal expression of Nintendo’s 2010s-era “blue ocean” strategy, the series got two entries in quick succession then disappeared, for good many assumed. Well, surprise! Nearly 15 years after we were last graced with an entry in the series, Endless Ocean Luminous is sailing our way. Is Endless […]

Sand Land Review – Enticing Toriyama Tribute

Sand Land

The recently-departed Akira Toriyama left behind a rich gaming legacy between contributing to the likes of Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger and the many, many, many Dragon Ball adaptations, and that legacy will only continue to build after his death. Sand Land is one of Toriyama’s more recent, lesser-known creations, but it’s been given a serious push over the past year, receiving an anime film, streaming series on Disney+, and now a video game from Bandai Namco and One Piece Odyssey developer ILCA. Of course, as great as some Toriyama-associated games have been, there’s also been plenty of so-so ones. […]

Harold Halibut Review – Charming Chore Sim

Harold Halibut

There are no shortage of passion projects within the world of indie games, but Harold Halibut from German developer Slow Bros. takes dedication to another level. In the works in some form since 2010, Harold Halibut’s striking stop-motion-inspired visuals have caught a lot of folks’ eyes, but there was always that lingering concern that this aquatic adventure may be a pipe dream. That a completed game may never surface. Thankfully, those fears were misplaced, as the game finally arrives this week. Has Harold Halibut been worth the long wait and all those many developer hours? Or is the end result […]

Princess Peach: Showtime! Review – Roles of a Royal Lifetime

Princess Peach Showtime!

It feels like Princess Peach has been waiting for her big breakout role for a while now. Nintendo clearly has an inkling that “lady who keeps getting kidnapped by turtles” is a character description in need of a bit of an update as she was given a significant role in the Super Mario Bros. Movie and is playable more often than not in newer Mario games. Unfortunately, she still hasn’t received that solo adventure she deserves, with 2005’s Super Princess Peach not leaving much of an impression. Well, nearly two decades later Princess Peach: Showtime! sees the Mushroom Kingdom monarch […]

Alone in the Dark Review – Flickers of Inspiration

Alone in the Dark

Before Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or any of the other horror staples were chilling and thrilling fans, there was Alone in the Dark. So, does the new Alone in the Dark vault the franchise back to the top of the survival […]
