UK Deals: Fire TV Sticks Drop to Just £16.99 at Amazon

We're back with another UK Daily Deals roundup, and there are some big offers to run through so let's get right into it. For starters, there's a huge discount on Fire TV Sticks at Amazon right now, with the standard stick down to just £16.99 (dropping from £44.99), or the 4K version down to £39.99 (dropping from £59.99). Both are tremendous deals going into the next Prime Day event on October 8-9.

We've also got great news in regards to the biggest superhero film of the year, as Deadpool & Wolverine 4K UHD preorders are now live at Amazon. The collector's edition 4K Steelbook comes in two variants, Deadpool or Wolverine, will cost £35, and will be released on November 4. Check out these offers and everything else just below.

TL;DR - Best UK Deals Today

Fire TV Stick (Amazon)

This is probably one of the best deals we've ever seen on a Fire TV Stick at Amazon. Down to just £16.99, this is a great opportunity to pick one or multiple to cover you in every room. Since most Smart TV operating system's are super duper slow, you're better off using a Fire stick. If you're interested, the 4K Fire TV Stick is also on sale, and down to £39.99 right now at Amazon.

Deadpool & Wolverine 4K UHD Steelbook

The moment has arrived. The year’s biggest superhero movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital, and preorders are now live Amazon UK. However, there's a decision to make: two variants of the limited edition Steelbook are available for you to choose from.

The differences are clear: one cover showcases Deadpool, while the other features Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Both look fantastic, and this could turn into a Pokémon-style situation where collectors aim to grab both.

27x Monster Ultra Energy 500ml

These are always some the best deals we see at Amazon. Buy in bulk, and save a whole bunch on some delicious fizzy energy drinks like Monster. Right now the best deal is on Monster Ultra Energy, where you can get 27 cans for just £24. Just stick three of the nine packs in your basket, and the discount will be applied when you checkout.

Grenade Hazel Nutter Protein Spread, 1 x 360 g Jar

Hazel Nutters, unite! It's an excellent deal, with £4 off the list price, making this one of the best deals of the week. If you're interested, the White Chocolate Cookie variant is also on sale at Amazon at the same price, so you could pick up both at an excellent price this week.

Xbox Wireless Controller – Ghost Cipher Special Edition

Looking for the best preorder deal on the Xbox Ghost Cipher special edition controller? Then you've come to the right place. The delightfully transparent gamepad has received a small but notable discount at Amazon in the UK, coming down to £59.99 after it was initially listed for £64.99.

Xbox Controller - Astral Purple

Xbox Controllers are down to £39.99 at Amazon UK, which is up to £25 off the list price, and a pretty excellent deal all things considered (it even price matches the Black Friday offer from last year). If you’ve been after a new gamepad, or you’re looking for a nice gift going into the festivities, this is a perfect price. This is especially true since there’s every colour going in the deal, like Shock Blue, Pulse Red, Electric Volt, Astral Purple, and more. I recently bought my partner the lovely Deep Pink, which she absolutely loves.

Deadpool & Wolverine 4K UHD Steelbook is Up for Preorder, and You Can Pick Your Favorite Cover

The moment has arrived. The year’s biggest superhero movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital, and preorders are now live at Amazon / Amazon UK.

Currently, Amazon has the Deadpool & Wolverine 4K UHD Steelbook listed for $65.99 on preorder and a release date of October 22, 2024.

While the price is steep, it’s typical for Amazon, where 4K Blu-ray preorder prices often start high but drop closer to release. Fortunately, Amazon’s preorder price guarantee ensures you pay the lowest price offered from the time you order until it ships.

Preorders are also live for the standard 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions of the film. In case it's your retailer of choice, or if Amazon happens to sell out between now and release, Walmart has also opened up preorders for the film. Additionally, UK preorders are available for £35, with a release date set for November 4—just a few weeks after the US launch.

Alongside the 4K and Blu-ray discs, and the Steelbook, physical editions come with several hours of extra bonus content, including a gag reel. The synopsis for the film's Blu-ray release also reads: "Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date – “Deadpool & Wolverine.” A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to… oh hell, just watch the movie. Synopses are stupid."

If you're wondering how and where you can watch Deadpool & Wolverine online, we've also got you covered. Deadpool & Wolverine is now available to rent or buy on digital streaming platforms. It will eventually be released on Disney+, as the movie is produced and distributed by Disney.

Disney has yet to announce a streaming release date for Deadpool & Wolverine. The three latest MCU movies to hit streaming — The Marvels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — all came to Disney+ 89 days after their theatrical debuts. Should the distributor follow suit here, Deadpool & Wolverine would come to Disney+ on October 23.

Another big upcoming 4K UHD/Blu-ray release is the Pulp Fiction 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition. There's a pop-up slipcover that deserves some extra attention. It folds out into a pop-up-book-style display depicting the dancing scene between Uma Thurman and Travolta’s characters at Jack Rabbit Slim’s.

The whole film is iconic: it's violent, filled with expletive-riddled banter that only Tarantino could write, and an absolute ‘90s masterpiece. If Pulp Fiction holds a special place in your movie-loving heart, it's another superb 4K UHD release to consider going into the holiday season.

You Can Preorder a Full-Size Claw Machine From Amazon Right Now

I have been putting money into claw machines since I was a little kid. Although my success rate for actually retrieving anything from these machines is less than stellar, I can't help but be tempted every time I see one. So the fact that Arcade1Up has a full-sized claw machine up for preorder right now has me questioning whether or not I should start clearing out space in my living room.

The Arcade1Up Claw Machine just recently became available for preorder and is set to be released on November 5, 2024. If you're planning on building out an authentic in-home arcade, it's definitely worth considering adding a huge claw machine into the mix alongside some of the best arcade cabinets money can buy.

Arcade1Up Full-Size Claw Machine Is Up for Preorder

The Arcade1Up Claw Machine sits at just over 5-feet high, which is actually about a foot shorter than some of the commercial machines you'd find at your local grocery store or arcade. It's also $500, much cheaper than the prices of commercial ones, which cost upward of $1,000. This model includes a light-up marquee, a light-up button, and a ceiling light that give it that authentic arcade look and feel. You also get 12 starter capsules that you can choose to fill with candy, cheap LEGO sets, or anything else you can stuff in a little ball. You can also fill the machine with your favorite Pokemon plushies, if that's what you're into.

You'll also be able to control the difficulty with three different modes to choose from. You can set the claw on easy, medium, or scam mode. So if you want the true authentic claw machine experience, you can choose to scam yourself with a frustratingly loose claw that somehow can't figure out how to hold onto anything.

What Is Amazon's Preorder Price Guarantee?

If you've never actually preordered anything from Amazon before, it's worth noting that this item includes Amazon's preorder price guarantee. According to Amazon's own help page, this means that if the price decreases between now and when the item ships, you'll pay the lowest price. So in this case, if there ends up being a discount that drops the price of this claw machine below $499, then you will only pay that lower price even if you preorder now.

7 Horror Movie Marathons to Watch in October

It's officially October, which means it's the best time of year to hunker down and have yourself a horror movie marathon. While you could just watch a bunch of horror classics, if you're looking for a binge with a bit more continuity, you won't find more long-running franchises to work through than in the slasher genre.

We've gathered some of the most popular horror movie franchises below as a starting point for what's on offer. So grab your popcorn, turn off the lights, and get ready to count how many kills you can keep track of.

The Friday The 13th Movies

Jason Voorhees is one of the most iconic horror villains, and the Friday the 13th movies he originates from are some of the best slashers ever made. The original Friday the 13th movie was released in 1980, and as of 2024, there are 12 movies in the franchise, including one where Jason goes to space for some reason.

If you're looking to watch all of the Friday the 13th movies in order, it will take you a little under 17 hours. If you're determined enough, that's possible in a single weekend.

The Conjuring Movies

The Conjuring universe is surprisingly large, and if you’re just entering the series for the first time, it can be a pretty confusing timeline. There are a total of 9 movies you can watch right now, including The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Nun films. A fourth and final Conjuring movie is hitting theaters next year.

If you include all nine movies and the five shorts in your streaming marathon, you can potentially watch all of the Conjuring movies in just under 16 and a half hours.

The Child's Play Movies

Chucky is another iconic slasher that just won't give up. There are currently eight Child's Play movies and a Chucky TV series with three seasons. If creepy dolls are up your alley, then we suggest starting with the original 1988 film and working your way through the series. You can also include the 2019 reboot, but it doesn't fit directly on the Child's Play timeline.

If you're planning on binge-watching all eight of the Chucky films, it will take you just over 11 hours and 40 minutes to get through them all, and that's not counting the TV series.

The Halloween Movies

Yet another classic slasher series, and perhaps the best one for an October binge-watch, the Halloween films feature Michael Myers in his iconic mask, brutally murdering people. If you're hoping to watch the Halloween movies in chronological order, however, we regret to inform you that the timeline is incredibly complicated. The Michael Myers universe can be split into five different timelines.

Watching all 13 Halloween movies is a challenge we'd only pose to the truly hardcore. For a more casual marathon, we suggest starting with the original 1978 film and then moving on to the newer trilogy. If you do want to try to watch all 13 of the Halloween movies, it will take you over 20 and half hours to do so.

The Scream Movies

If you're looking for a horror movie marathon that doesn't take itself too seriously, watching all the Scream movies in order is a great way to do so. Scream 7 is set to arrive in 2026, so if you want to watch all 6 of the Ghostface movies in marathon form before then, it will take you a little over 11 and half hours. Here's where you can watch all of the Scream movies online.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Movies

If you do a Friday the 13th movie marathon, then you're going to end up with a Freddy vs. Jason match up. If you'd prefer just a Freddy movie marathon, you'll be happy to hear there are currently 9 films in the series. Although it's been almost 13 years since we've had a Freddy movie, the franchise is still iconic enough to be worthy of movie marathon status.

If you're trying to watch all of the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies in order, it will take you just a little over 14 hours to get through all of them.

The Saw Movies

Before Insidious or The Conjuring, iconic horror filmmaker James Wan worked alongside Leigh Wannell on the gore-centric Saw franchise. There are currently 10 total movies across the Saw timeline, though without Tobin Bell appearing as Jigsaw, Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a bit of an outlier.

If you think you have the stomach to watch all the Saw movies in one go, it will take a little over 16 hours to do so. You can see our guide to where to watch the Saw movies online to get started.

More Horror Movie Binges

We have plenty more suggestions about what to watch during 2024's spooky season. Whether you're looking for a slasher binge or just want some vampire action in your life, these lists should help get you on the right track:

You can also check out our list of the best movie marathons in general for some non-spooky options.

October Prime Day vs. Black Friday: Which Sales Event Has Better Deals?

With October Prime Day 2024 happening next week, you may be looking ahead at all of the upcoming sales events to start planning your holiday shopping. The Amazon sales event originally began as an Amazon exclusive day of deals, but has quickly grown into an industry-wide shopping holiday rivaling even Black Friday. If you're hoping to save some money on TVs, games, or even groceries, October Prime Day is a great time to do so. You can even choose to shop the competing Walmart Sale during the same time.

That being said, is October Prime Day as good as Black Friday in terms of actual discounts? Amazon and likely other major retailers – like Best Buy and Walmart – will be offering major deals on a wide variety of products. With so many different price cuts to look at, we wanted to compare the two shopping holidays to determine which one is better.

October Prime Day Deals vs. Black Friday Deals

The most important comparison we need to consider when looking at the two shopping events are the deals themselves. Both October Prime Day and Black Friday offer steep discounts on big ticket items like Apple Watches, iPads, and 4K TVs during the main sales days, and there isn’t always a clear winner in terms of which sales event has deeper price cuts. With gaming companies like Nintendo already offering Black Friday bundles, there are quite a few big purchases that you can make during either sale.

The main advantage Black Friday has over October Prime Day is how many retailers actually participate. This level of competition results in some incredible deals outside of the main retailers that can net you a really good deal on tech products like gaming consoles and laptops. This generally makes Black Friday a better time to buy those items than Prime Day.

The flip side of that is that October Prime Day is more centralized to Amazon and the other major retailers, making it a great time to buy the brands that these companies own. Amazon Fire TVs, Echo speakers, and Kindle deals are all already on sale with Amazon's early device deals. So if you don’t mind buying Amazon owned brands and already have a Prime membership, you can usually save a ton of money without having to wait for Black Friday.

Product Release Cycles

Another major thing to consider between Black Friday and October Prime Day is that they happen at during different months. That means some product release cycles end up better matching up with Black Friday than Cyber Monday. One of the reasons Black Friday is one of the best times to buy a 4K TV for example is because many of the newer TV models get released in January and retailers are clearing out stock to make room for new products. Some of these deals will be available in October as well, but likely not as many.

Phone release cycles, however, line up very well with both sales events. Apple tends to release their new iPhone models in the fall like we saw with iPhone 16, which results in additional price drops on previous phones. Apple also usually releases a new Apple Watch model, which results in some of the lowest prices on the older models. With the new iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10 now available, Both October Prime Day and Black Friday will likely still be the best times to buy phones and accessories.

Total Number of Sales Days

Another big difference between October Prime Day and Black Friday is the total number of days you have to shop the sale. Although Black Friday used to be a single day of deals, it has become more akin to a whole month of deals in recent years. With the addition of Cyber Monday sales, Black Friday season has a much larger window of savings than any of the Prime Days. October Prime Day has expanded to multiple sale days since it first began, but you still have a much smaller window to peruse savings than you would with Black Friday deals.

What Should You Buy on October Prime Day?

With release cycles in mind, some of the best things to buy on October Prime Day are last year’s models that may go out of stock by Black Friday. That includes things like older phone models and TV deals on brands that are already a couple release cycles ahead. These items are going to have some of the lowest prices available because Amazon and other retailers are going to be working on clearing them out of their warehouses.

The most obvious buys during Prime Day are Amazon’s own devices. Fire TVs, Kindles, and Echo devices, and Ring Doorbells will likely all be at their lowest possible price points. These items will likely also drop down to similar prices during Black Friday, but there’s no reason to wait until then to make a purchase.

If you’re shopping outside of Amazon on Prime Day, it’s also worth looking at gaming PC deals and discounts on GPUs. While Black Friday may have better discounts, the price of PC components has pretty much normalized and it’s a surprisingly good time to upgrade your setup. Prime Day is arguably one of the best times to buy a GPU and an overall good time to buy a gaming PC in 2024.

What Should You Buy on Black Friday?

Black Friday is generally the best time to find deals on everything, but it’s also your best bet to find discounts on newer tech products and gaming consoles. Some of the best OLED TV deals are going to be on Black Friday, and it’s also one of the only times of the year you’ll find Nintendo Switch sales. You can also usually find direct discounts on Xbox Series X consoles as well as PS5 bundles that you won’t find any other time of year. This is especially true with the release of the PS5 Pro in early November.

Outside of gaming consoles, Black Friday is also an excellent time to buy a laptop. Whether you're looking for a good Chromebook or a high-end gaming laptop, November is usually when the major PC manufacturers fight the hardest for your business.

Additionally, some of the very best deals on Black Friday are actually outside of major tech products. This includes clothing, furniture, and outdoor gear that is out of season. You’ll find some of these discounts on Prime Day as well, but they aren’t nearly as prevalent as they are on Black Friday.

What is Xbox's Recent Controversy?

The recent discomfored surrounding Xbox can be isolated to a recent round of brutal layoffs. Microsoft is closing a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda. Alpha Dog Games, maker of mobile game Mighty Doom, will also close. Roundhouse Studios will be absorbed by The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios. Microsoft, currently valued at over $3 trillion, did not say how many staff will lose their jobs, but significant layoffs are inevitable.

Microsoft's announcement of the cuts at Bethesda come over three months after the company announced plans to cut 1,900 staff from its video game workforce, and amid a boom time for Bethesda's Fallout series following the breakout hit Prime Video TV show.

Is Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Coming to Xbox Game Pass?

Microsoft has confirmed the arrival of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 day-one on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft made the announcement alongside the release of a live-action reveal trailer called 'The Truth Lies'. In it we see world leaders including Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, George H. W. Bush, Colin Powell, and Saddam Hussein, delivering cryptic speeches. Black Ops 6 will be set during the events of the Gulf War during the early '90s.

Is Call of Duty Black Ops 6 300GB?

Activision has also clarified that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 won’t actually require a 300 GB download despite previous messaging. Players began to panic about the size of this year’s Call of Duty after noticing its Xbox store page.

At the time, the page listed that the game would require a 309.85 GB download for those hoping to hop into the post-Cold War first-person shooter when it launches this fall. That'll put a pretty big dent in the hard drive of most PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles, so players were, understandably, very concerned.

When Should I Buy an Xbox?

In general, it is advisable to keep an eye out for sales and restocks throughout the year, as availability has improved since the initial launch of the console. Unlike the Nintendo Switch, there is no specific recommendation to wait for a sale regardless of the time of year. Instead, it's a good idea to monitor various retailers and online platforms for restock announcements and promotional offers.

However, certain events like Black Friday or other holiday seasons may bring about unique bundles, discounts, or promotional deals specifically for the Xbox Series X. These bundles may include additional games, accessories, or exclusive limited editions. While quantities for such promotions might be limited, they can provide an opportunity to get more value for your purchase. See our guide to Xbox Series X prices for more info.

Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S?

Choosing between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S ultimately depends on your gaming preferences, budget, and specific requirements. Let's compare the two consoles to help you make an informed decision:

1. Performance: The Xbox Series X is the more powerful option, offering native 4K gaming, higher graphical fidelity, and faster loading times. It has more advanced hardware, including a larger storage capacity. On the other hand, the Xbox Series S targets a lower price point and offers a less powerful performance, targeting 1440p resolution gaming and upscaling to 4K.

2. Price: The Xbox Series S is more affordable compared to the Xbox Series X. If budget is a significant factor for you, the Xbox Series S provides a cost-effective option while still delivering a next-generation gaming experience. For example, the Series S can play Starfield at 1440p 30fps (vs 4K 30fps on Series X).

3. Storage: The Xbox Series X comes with a larger internal storage capacity, allowing you to store more games directly on the console. The Xbox Series S, however, has a smaller storage capacity, which means you may need to manage your game library more actively or rely on external storage solutions.

4. Disc Drive: The Xbox Series X includes a disc drive, enabling you to play physical game discs and enjoy a wider range of media options, including Blu-ray and DVD playback. The Xbox Series S, in contrast, is a digital-only console, meaning you can only play games downloaded from the digital store.

5. Graphics and Performance: While both consoles support ray tracing, the Xbox Series X provides a more immersive and visually impressive experience due to its superior hardware capabilities. If you prioritize cutting-edge graphics and want the best performance available, the Xbox Series X is the preferable choice.

Consider your gaming preferences, budget, and whether you prioritize top-of-the-line performance or cost-effectiveness. If you have a 4K TV, want the most powerful console, and are willing to invest more, the Xbox Series X is the recommended option. If you have a lower budget, a 1080p or 1440p TV, and don't mind sacrificing some performance, the Xbox Series S offers excellent value for money.

With how expensive gaming is getting in 2024, we're trying to save you as much money as possible on the games and other tech you actually want to buy. We've got great deal roundups available for all major platforms such as Switch and Xbox, and keep these updated daily with brand new offers. If you're trying to keep costs down while maintaining your favorite hobby, stay tuned for more incredible discounts.

It’ll release on October 10, and look rather amazing if you ask me. If you have been loving Xbox’s venture into OG Xbox 2000’s nostalgia territory, the new gamepad style should certainly be tickling your fancy.

Other notable big deals right now include the Meta Quest 3 discount that I’m going absolutely barmy for. It’s a massive deal, especially since it includes Batman Arkham Shadow bundled in with it now. The 512GB version is also down $499 at Amazon, a significant $150 off its original price.

Another of our favorite offers right now is on three month Game Pass Ultimate memberships, which are down to just $36.49. With a price hike now in effect for Game Pass users, there's no better time to stack these codes so you can play all of their newly-announced games the day they're available. It ultimately saves you $23.48 versus the new price for Game Pass Ultimate monthly, which is well worth taking advantage of.

If you're looking for even more game deals, you've come to the right place. We have a variety of video game roundups to check out that are chock-full of discounts for each platform, including a breakdown of the best PlayStation deals, the best Xbox deals, and the best Nintendo Switch deals.

Xbox Ghost Cipher Controller Preorders Discounted at Amazon in the UK

Looking for the best preorder deal on the Xbox Ghost Cipher special edition controller? Then you've come to the right place. The delightfully transparent gamepad has received a small but notable discount at Amazon in the UK, coming down to £59.99 after it was initially listed for £64.99.

This sleek new release follows in the footsteps of the Sky Cipher Special Edition, evoking nostalgia for the original Xbox era of the early 2000s. This is currently the best deal available for the new controller, and the best place to order is still Amazon.

For more deals going into Black Friday and October Prime Day, or if you're interested in the PS5 30th Anniversary Edition preorders on October 10, ensure you're following @IGNUKDeals on Twitter/X.

Reminder: Amazon won't charge you a penny until the controller ships, so you can secure your preorder now and still change your mind before release day.

There’s also a huge discount on Xbox Controllers that should tickle your fancy, especially as it’s unlikely we’ll see a better deal before Black Friday at the end of November. Controllers are also down to just £39.99 at Amazon, which is up to £25 off the list price, and a pretty excellent deal all things considered (it even price matches the Black Friday offer from last year).

Other notable big deals right now include the Meta Quest 3 discount that I’m going absolutely barmy for. It’s a massive deal, especially since it includes Batman Arkham Shadow bundled in with it now. ICYMI the discount, you can grab it for just £409.99 for the 128GB version, or £464 for 512GB in the UK. In the US, the 512GB version is also down $499 at Amazon, a significant $150 off its original price. Also in the US, Lenovo currently has Xbox Controllers for $39 with code XBOXMODE.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Preorders Get a Massive Discount Just a Month Before Release in the UK

Thinking about grabbing the new Call of Duty this year? We've got the best deal in the UK right here. You don't need to pay the full £70 for the highly anticipated return to the Black Ops series. Right now, you can secure Black Ops 6 for just £53.99 with the code GHOST10 at Currys, available on PS5, PS4, and Xbox.

The new installment brings the sub-series up to the early 1990s, with in-game representations of world leaders like George H. W. Bush, Saddam Husseine, and Margaret Thatcher. As usual, it will include a single-player campaign, multiplayer, and zombies.

Activision also recently announced all the changes coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Multiplayer based on feedback to the recent beta. Black Ops 6, due out October 25, has Multiplayer developed by Treyarch, with the Campaign developed by Warzone developer Raven.

Treyarch also weighed in on the ongoing community debate regarding the map sizes, following the beta's focus on smaller, more chaotic close-quarters maps. Treyarch emphasized that most of the 12 core 6v6 maps available at launch will be medium-sized, explaining that the eight maps featured in the beta "trended smaller" and included some Strike maps, which support 2v2 to 6v6 gameplay.

Other top deals in the UK right now include Meta Quest 3 headsets getting a significant discount at Amazon. You can pick up a 512GB VR headset with Batman Arkham Shadow included for free at just £469, over £150 off the RRP. Amazon has also dropped the price of an Xbox Controller down to just £39.99 right before October Prime Day.

The Best Trading Card Games Worth Getting Into

Today, card games are everywhere, but in 1993, the trading card game (TCG) genre was born with just one: Magic: The Gathering, created by Richard Garfield. I became a fan a few years later, in 1996, during the release of the Fourth Edition core set.

Once I got the hang of the game, I was hooked for nearly three years. The artwork drew me in, and the flavor text – often witty, dark, and sarcastic – kept me entertained, but what I loved most was playing. The tactile thrill of placing a card on the table, imagining myself as a powerful planeswalker commanding forces beyond mortal comprehension, was unbeatable.

Though other trading card games existed back then, my loyalty to Magic: The Gathering consumed both my attention and my budget. Fast forward to today, and the landscape is even more crowded. The old titans of the genre are still thriving, while countless newer games vie for attention, each bringing something unique to the table.

With that in mind, here are the 10 best trading and living card games to dive into in 2024 – games that are fun to play, boast active communities, and have the potential for long-term growth. Whatever you decide to try out and play, make sure you have a community to share it with: either a local one where you live or an online one that is supportive. The community surrounding the game is as important as the game itself.

The Big Three

These are the established choices for anyone who's deciding on a trading card game.

Magic: The Gathering

The original trading card playing experience, Magic: The Gathering established so many norms that we take for granted today. Plains, Swamps, Forests, Mountains, Islands – these were the lands you drew power from, to call angels, demons, zombies, orcs, goblins, and enchanted creatures to your side. The benefits of picking up Magic: The Gathering now, nearly 30 years into its run, are the same as the drawbacks: It's just so big at this point. There's a lot to explore and play with, but it can be intimidating and overwhelming to learn it from scratch. As was true back when I started playing, the best way to learn is not by reading the instruction booklet that comes with every starter deck, but by having a friend walk you through a match.

Pokémon TCG

Still popular after all these years, Pokemon TCG started in 1996. Its cards in America were originally published by Wizards of the Coast, the same company that published Magic: The Gathering. Pokemon's fan base has always been more collector-heavy than player-heavy, but this has been especially true in recent years, as the value of Pokemon cards has continued to go up. (Most famously in 2021, Logan Paul paid $5.27 million for a Grade 10 Pokemon Illustrator card, which he occasionally wears around his neck when he wrestles in WWE.) Beyond this, there's an appealing simplicity to Pokemon, in that your turn is largely your own; you aren't overlapping moves or playing over your opponent's turn, which makes things a lot more streamlined.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game

Recognized in 2009 by Guinness as the highest-selling trading card game in the world, Yu-Gi-Oh! popularized chains as a gameplay mechanic, and it was considerably more chaotic than its predecessors. You're often countering and making significant moves during your opponent's turn in addition to your own, and on its highest levels, the victor can be determined on a starting hand and who goes first. Your enjoyment will largely depend on who you learn from, especially if you're coming into the game cold.

The Newcomers

The seven TCGs below might not have the decades-long legacies of the Big Three, but they're making plenty of noise and are worth checking out.

Digimon TCG

Newly revamped for 2020, Digimon's main draw is its progression: Hatch an egg, have it undergo Digivolution (which allows you to improve upon your Digimon's stats), and move it to the Battle Area to attack your opponent. It is still a newer TCG game, relatively speaking, which means that it doesn't have the legacy baggage of the prior three. The community is notably welcoming and open to new innovations, and the metagame is diverse and still in the process of being defined.

Netrunner

Set in a cyberpunk dystopia, Netrunner, which pits hackers against a faceless corporate entity, has a long, complex history. The original physical card game came out in 1996, and it was revamped and released as Android: Netrunner in 2012. Today, it currently exists as an ongoing fan project. Non-profit game publisher Null Signal Games releases new starter and expansion sets, and the PDFs are all available on a pay-what-you-want basis. These new sets are also compatible with the prior Android: Netrunner sets, and everything, from the artwork to the new mechanics, feels legitimate and true to form.

Disney Lorcana

When Disney commits to something, they go full throttle. Disney Lorcana, which draws from over 100 years of Disney animated history, takes full advantage of the nostalgia and sea of creative properties inherent in its brand. Instead of land, you summon with ink, and true to Disney's family-friendly image, you accumulate 20 points instead of decimating your opponent's life to win. There are currently over 600 different cards in print between the starter set and the two expansions. The newest expansion, Chapter 4: Ursula's Return, launched on May 31.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Name recognition goes a long way. In Marvel Champions, select the specific Marvel superhero that you want to play. Then, team up with other players and work through different scenarios, in which you defeat villains and foil their schemes. The Core set starts you with five different selectable heroes: Iron Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and She-Hulk. Subsequent Expansion packs give you prebuilt decks that allow you to play as over 30 additional characters and face additional villains with different storylines. It's among one of our favorite Marvel card games available.

Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Inspired by the 1981 horror RPG Call of Cthulhu, Arkham Horror is a supernatural, Lovecraftian mystery game. It puts you in the shoes of an investigator, who must work through a creepy horror scenario and emerge with their body and sanity intact. You start by choosing an investigator: a Guardian, Seeker, Rogue, Mystic, Survivor, or Neutral, each of which has its specific strengths and weaknesses. Then, you investigate missing people, creepy cults, rumors of a lost ancient city, and more. It's all very evocative and tentacled. It's a great RPG card game worth getting into

Star Wars Unlimited

Star Wars: Unlimited is a brand new card game, but the established pre-existing universe of Star Wars makes this an excellent place to start; its longevity is nearly guaranteed, given the franchise's popularity. You play as a leader of your respective faction – the starter set includes Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Then you wage war, sending out droids and troops or using Force powers until one base is destroyed. The current set, Spark of Rebellion, focuses largely on the events of the original trilogy. The most recent expansion set, Shadows of the Galaxy, focuses on the criminal underbelly of the galaxy, and features mercenaries and bounty hunters.

Flesh and Blood

The creators of Flesh and Blood are traditionalists; they designed their game to be played in person – hence, in “Flesh and Blood” – rather than an online format. The game is fantasy-themed, and you have a hero who falls into one of 11 classes: Assassin, Brute, Guardian, Illusionist, Mechanologist, Merchant, Ninja, Ranger, Runeblade, Warrior, or Wizard. You equip your hero, build a deck around them, and send them into battle with spells, blows, and counterblows at the ready.
