AMD's X3D processors use 3D-V-Cache technology to outperform its non-X3D counterparts as well as any Intel CPU in games. The Radeon RX 9070 XT Received a 10/10 at IGN
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is the only 2025-released GPU that we gave a 10/10 score. Even though it costs $150 less than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, the 9070 XT beats it out in several of the games we tested. In a few benchmarks, the results aren't even close. The 9070 XT approaches the performance of the $1,000 RX 7900 XTX but with better ray tracing and upscaling performance than its predecessor. This is the least expensive graphics card from either AMD or Nvidia that I would comfortably recommend for playing the latest and most demanding games in 4K at 60fps or higher framerates. The LG B5 is equipped with a W-OLED panel that boasts superior image quality compared to non-OLED TVs thanks to its near-infinite contrast ratio, near-instantaneous response times, and ability to produce true blacks. Compared to the LG C-series TVs, it lacks the Evo technology which means it isn't as bright as an more expensive C5 model, however, it's very similar to the previous generation's C4 because the generational performance improvement closes the gap.

Despite being a current generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2 has lax TV requirements compared to the PS5 or Xbox Series X. When the Switch is connected to its dock and a television, it is only capable of outputting a 4K resolution signal at up to 60 frames per second. Oddly, it doesn’t even get VRR when docked – that’s reserved for handheld mode only. All that aside, the Switch 2 will still benefit from an OLED TV's overall image quality, just like how the Switch OLED looks better than the original Switch, despite the fact that the screens share similar specs.

The Best Pixel 10 Phone Cases Right Now
Qi2 has been a slow burn when it comes to bringing magnetic wireless charging to Android devices. The first magnetic chargers to actualize the standard began to arrive in late 2023, but only a few Android phones, like the HMD Skyline, have actually supported it out of the box. Samsung has gone halfway there, releasing its Galaxy S25 phones as Qi2 Ready-certified – meaning they’ll get 15W of power delivery wirelessly if you add a Qi2 Ready magnetic case to them.
Thankfully, that’s not the case (ba dum *ch*) with the Pixel 10. Every Pixel 10 phone supports Qi2 wireless charging up to at least 15W, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold gets support for Qi2.2’s max speed of 25W.
1. Google Pixelsnap Cases

Google wasn’t always great at phone cases, but it’s come a long way in the last couple of years. Its silicone cases come in seven colorways, including four options color-matched to the phones themselves. Expect a slim, pleasant fit that doesn’t add too much bulk or heft, along with a soft microfiber lining. And this year, they’re magnetic, so you can get full power out of your Qi2 wireless charger.
They’ll still come with the usual silicone case problems: Specifically, they can be a little sticky. That’s a good thing for keeping the phone securely in-hand, but it’s a pain when it comes to pocketing it on a hot day in your favorite blue jeans. They tend to collect dust and hair, especially as they age.
At $49.99, they’re a little spendy compared to some third-party cases, but if you like Silicone, the Google Pixelsnap cases are probably the best ones you can buy right now.
2. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Pixelsnap Case

Last year, Google made some of the best cases for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and I expect that to be no different this year. The first-party case is likely to be the best-fitting, and it’s color-matched to the phones, so you don’t have to worry about coordinating colors so the camera bump isn’t a garish little window.
Otherwise, expect the case to be effectively identical to that of last year’s phones – Qi2 magnetic charging ring included – since Google didn’t really change the chassis this year. That may even mean that, if you’ve got an old Pixel 9 Pro Fold case, you can just re-use that one, at the risk of mismatched colors. But hey, if it saves you the $69.99 Google charges for it, it’s a good way to put off the extra expense after you’ve just spent at least $1,799 for the phone itself.
3. Dbrand Pixel 10 Grip Case
Most Stylish Pixel 10 Case
Dbrand has come out of the gate with its usual slew of stylish cases for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The cases come in matte black, but are also available with options like a shimmering holographic skin and a couple of prints of the innards, either scanned or X-rayed.
If you used the company’s older Pixel Grip cases, expect more of the same, down to the magnets; only now that Google has named it, they’re Pixelsnap magnets. The one difference, for now at least, is that Dbrand isn’t offering its anti-yellowing Ghost clear case for the standard Pixel 10 series – just the Pro and Pro XL models.
Pricewise, at $59.90, these are spendier than a lot of the options on this list, but the company’s cases tend to fit well and offer decent drop protection. They have chamfered lips, too, to make it more pleasant to interact with the touchscreen than cases with blunt edges.
4. Peak Design Everyday Case
Best Mountable Case
Peak Design doesn’t make your usual smartphone cases. The company, known mainly for its fashionable bags, has a line of phone cases with a modular spin: They connect to a variety of mounts for things like motorcycle and bicycle handlebars and tripods, using Peak Design’s strong, square-shaped magnetic SlimLink connector. They also contain a magnetic ring that lets you use a Qi2 charger with your phone.
The Pixel 10 Everyday case comes in black, green, and brown, and they’re made of either nylon or Clarino vegan leather, which is a microfiber material created from industrial waste. (Don’t worry, it won’t turn you into The Toxic Avenger. Probably.) The lip is lined with a TPU bumper, and it’s got anodized aluminum buttons, which is good – metal buttons are table stakes if you want me to pay $49.95 for a phone case.
The cases aren’t the most expensive, but they’re not exactly cheap either. They’ll run you $49.95 for the basic case or $59.95 for the Pixel 10 Everyday Case Loop, which has a built-in finger loop for a more stable hold. Unfortunately, it looks like the Loop version is only available in brown.
5. Force Air Case with Pixelsnap
Best Clear Case
Google sells a couple of Pixel 10 clear case options via its online store, but the better of the two seems like the Force Air Case with Pixelsnap. I’ve never actually heard of Force, the company that makes it, but there are a couple of reasons I’m giving its case the nod. One is simply price: it’s only $34.99, while the Case Mate option Google also sells is $10 more.
The other is its polycarbonate backing. Dbrand made a lot of noise in 2023 when it created the Ghost Case, a clear case it claimed would never yellow. The main reason isn’t that the company figured out some secret sauce that keeps the TPU from going all piss-colored. It’s that it replaced the back of the phone with polycarbonate, using TPU just for the outer edge.
The Force Air case does the same thing, which probably means the fully clear version’s TPU outer edge will take on a dingy hue eventually. But the company is also offering the case in two other options in which the outer edge is a colored TPU, in blue or black. I’d expect that those two would stay clear, at least for longer than a normal floppy TPU case would.
6. Mous Super Thin Case With Pixelsnap
Best Thin Case
This Mous (pronounced “mouse,” by the way) case is 1.1mm thick, with slightly raised edges that the company says can help protect the phone while saving bulk. It’s also Pixelsnap-compatible, with a built-in magnetic ring for charging the phone or slapping accessories onto. Mous also says it was co-created with Google’s own designers to ensure fit and that the colors match.
Whatever the company did for protection, it’s probably still not as protective as some of the bigger tank-like options out there, but if you’re willing to sacrifice a little peace of mind for a phone that feels better in-hand, Mous has you covered. Plus, at $44.99, it’s a little bit cheaper than most of the cases on this list.
7. Otterbox Defender
Best Rugged Case
Otterbox has a longstanding reputation for high-quality phone cases made of sturdy plastic and rubber, and I’d expect that to be the same for the Pixel 10 series. The company has cases for all of the standard phones – it’s only offering one of its Thin Flex Series cases for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
All of the Defender cases right now are clear, with a rubbery border (black or navy) for outer protection. They’ve got embedded magnets to let you charge the phone or attach magnetic accessories, and they’ve got built-in anchors for adding straps and tchotchkes to your phone. The company says it also offers a free holster that can let you clip your phone to a belt or bag and also serves as a kickstand.
The one thing I’ve never liked about Otterbox cases is really just how the buttons feel although that seems challenging when you’re focused on making the phone as protective as possible. These new cases are spendy, too, costing $69.99 each (or $59.99 for the Thin Flex Pixel 10 Pro Fold case I mentioned).
How to Pick a Google Pixel 10 Case
Choosing the right phone case is easier these days than it used to be, although not necessarily because cases are any better. They are, but phones have also become a lot more durable. Still, they’re an expensive investment, particularly if you’re not going through a wireless provider deal to get them.
If you’re like me and aren’t quite as concerned about adding durability and heft, the right things to consider are ergonomic in nature – is it comfortable to hold? Do the buttons feel good to use? Is the case designed with the minimal bezels of modern touch screens in mind? Looks are key, too. Is it going to ugly up Google’s phones, which are genuinely nice to look at?
And if you’re buying a clear case, consider fit and the possibility that the case will grow yellow with time. TPU is commonly used in these cases and is nice and flexible, but it also takes on a grimy look over time, while straight up plastic is far less malleable and can crack if you drop it. A combo of the two is better, especially if the TPU part is colored. The other thing about clear cases is they like to collect dust. A good fit reduces this, but only so much, so bear in mind you might be compelled to wipe it out every now and then.
If you’re buying a folding phone, your priorities may bend back toward protection, despite the Pixel 10 Pro Fold being IP68-rated, meaning it’s dust and waterproof when it ships. That’s a big win for foldables, which have been particularly vulnerable to dust, but it’s still an inherently vulnerable form factor, thanks to its folding hinge. Look for a case that’s protective yet grippy, and be especially mindful of the bumper around the front-facing outer screen, as that’s the most challenging piece to get right and is often so floppy you might as well not bother using it, because it’ll just keep falling off.

Russo, meet Rambo. Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO will produce John Rambo, the upcoming prequel-reboot of the iconic action franchise that Noah Centineo (Black Adam, The Recruit) is in final negotiations to star in.
AGBO will produce John Rambo in association with Lionsgate and Millennium Media, Lionsgate announced Wednesday. The Russo Brothers themselves will serve as executive producers.
Sisu’s Jalmari Helander will direct the movie from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian, Black Adam). Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco will produce for AGBO, alongside Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, and Jonathan Yunger for Millennium Media.
“Set during the Vietnam War and filming in Thailand, John Rambo will explore the formative experiences that shaped one of cinema’s most memorable action heroes,” according to the official announcement.
Production on John Rambo is expected to begin in early 2026.
“Rambo is one of the most enduring and iconic figures in action cinema and exploring the origins of that mythology is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” said Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer, AGBO.

Holy pizza, they're making an Overcooked reality TV show at last.
This news dropped today from Deadline, which reports that the series is in the works for Netflix from A24. This would be A24's first reality series.
The reality show is supposedly an unscripted format along the same lines as Nailed It! and Floor Is Lava, and will feature kitchen challenges with a bent toward the kind of chaos you might see in the Overcooked video game. You know, trying to cook meals in the beds of two moving trucks, for instance. Probably. I'm sure.
The show is in the early stages and is being produced by Gemma Langford, Oli De-Vine, and Phil Duncan, all members of developer Ghost Town Games.
Overcooked first released in 2016, as an up-to-four-player cooperative game where players try to complete cooking tasks to build orders to meet customer requests, all while dealing with various kitchen obstacles. It's a fun, chaotic time that we gave an 8.4/10 back in 2017 when its Nintendo Switch port first arrived. As our reviewer said then, "Overcooked is one of the freshest couch co-op games I’ve ever played. It’s a perfect blend of strategy and chaos, asking you and your teammates to think on your feet as its smart and strange levels do everything they possibly can to make sure you are shouting at each other."
The "All You Can Eat" version of Overcooked, which includes both Overcooked and its sequel, Overcooked 2, online play, and all DLC, launched back in 2021.

KPop Demon Hunters is, unshockingly, getting a sequel. But it's going to take a bit of time to make, so you're not going to see it until 2029.
This news comes from Variety, following reports earlier this year that KPop Demon Hunters would in fact be getting sequels (plural). According to Variety, Netflix and Sony have finalized a deal for the direct sequel, but animated movies simply take a long time to make.
It's no surprise that KPop Demon Hunters has garnered this much support for follow-ups. The film is literally the most popular thing Netflix has ever put out, even beating out Squid Game's first season, Wednesday, and Stranger Things. Despite releasing all the way back in June, it remained the second most-popular movie to watch on Netflix last week (ending 11/2, behind House of Dynamite) and has spent 20 weeks in a row in Netflix's top 10, usually in the first or second spot. 14 million people watched it last week alone. Yeah, I'd be hustling to get a sequel made, too.
If you somehow haven't watched it yet, KPop Demon Hunters is a Sony Pictures Animation film following Korean pop band Huntrix, a trio who moonlight as, demon hunters battling against an evil demon king intent on devouring humanity. In our 8/10 review, we called it "a stunning animated action musical with terrific fight sequences, catchy musical numbers, and an ample amount of harmony and heart."
Though past reporting has suggested a live-action remake might be in the works, creator Maggie Kang has since said that the series is best-suited to animation, saying that it's "really hard to imagine these characters in a live action world."
KPop Demon Hunters is available to stream on Netflix now, both in regular and singalong formats.

Cole Escola will reportedly write the screenplay, following their work writing the hit Broadway comedy Oh Mary! about Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, for which they also won best actor for their portrayal of Mary. Oh Mary! also received nominations for best play, best featured actor (Conrad Ricamora), and best costume design, and it won for best direction (Sam Pinkleton).
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to," Lawrence said on the podcast. "Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it." Lawrence added that she expects herself and Stone may co-star in the film.
Despite there being a long list of movies featuring The Muppets, and despite Miss Piggy's diva nature, this would be the first time Miss Piggy had her own film. It would also be the first major The Muppets film in over a decade. The last The Muppets movie was Muppets Most Wanted back in 2014. While we've since had various television series and direct-to-TV or streaming specials such as Muppets Haunted Mansion, the gang has been mysteriously missing from the big screen for a long time now. A 2023 television series, The Muppets Mayhem, was canceled after just one season.
Which is a shame, because we love The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted included. We gave it an 8/10 all those years ago, saying it was a "fun, joyful film that once more reminds us why the Muppets are so wonderful."

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has landed on streaming a little over three months after arriving in theaters. The family-oriented flick joins the rest of the MCU on Disney+, which recently went through a new round of price hikes. Here’s what you need to know.
The Fantastic Four Is Now Streaming on Disney+
After October’s price increases, standalone Disney+ now starts at $11.99/month, with Premium subscribptions starting at $18.99/month. The spread of Disney+ bundles are all about $1-2 more expensive, save the new bundle with ESPN Unlimited which is still available at a small discount. To be honest, if you’re not already a subscriber, I’d recommend holding off until Black Friday deals.
Clint Gage's review of the movie for IGN speaks highly of the new cast: “There’s a charisma to each of them individually and chemistry between them all,” going so far as to say they feel like a “proper family.” Much of what resonated with this film is its portrayal of family, even for the cast themselves, as we spoke with star Vanessa Kirby earlier this year about her role as both a strong superhero and mother.
Marvel has slowly but surely grown its investment in physical releases. The Fantastic Four: First Steps has a particularly wide spread of options, including a standard 4K steelbook as well as retailer-exclusive steelbooks from Walmart and Amazon. Several series will release new episodes on Disney+ throughout November. Dancing With the Stars continues in its 34th season, with new episodes streaming on Tuesdays until the winner is crowned on November 25. Disney Twisted-Wonderland, the villain-themed anime, will get new episodes every Wednesday. Subscribers will also sporadically see new episodes from Marvel’s “Amazing Friends” Disney Jr. series.
Starting off the month, the youngins will get several seasons of the animal-themed CoComelon series. Joy to the World, a collaboration with Hulu, kicks off the rom-com holiday season with a classic “pretend to be my boyfriend, oops now we're in love for real” scheme.

Marvel's Star Wars: Legacy of Vader series has been busy filling in the year-long gap between the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, revealing how Kylo Ren consolidates control over the First Order even as he continues to try to kill the past. Already, the series has revealed fascinating new insight into Ben Solo's history with the Knights of Ren. And in the latest issue, we learn that Ben's fateful battle with Luke Skywalker on Crait isn't the last time these two characters meet.
How does Kylo Ren reunite with his Uncle Luke, and what happens when he does? Read on to find out, but beware of spoilers for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #10 ahead!
Having recently clashed with Tava Ren, the new leader of the Knights of Ren, Ben returns to Fortress Vader on Mustafar in this issue. Ben's quest to kill his past has taken on a new sense of urgency, as he can sense the presence of his uncle watching him through the Force. He wants to put a stop to that by any means necessary.
Vaneé, the cybernetically enhanced former servant to Darth Vader, suggests that his new master try to enter the secret vault at the heart of Fortress Vader. Vaneé hints that this vault contains Vader's greatest secret power. But when Ben tries to enter the vault, he only becomes disoriented and emerges through the same door he entered.
In order to placate his angry master, Vaneé instead suggests that Ben take a rest in Vader's Sith Meditation Chamber. No sooner does he begin meditating than Ben undergoes a disturbing vision. He finds himself in a haunted swamp where the heads of his former friends and family taunt him for his failures. Ben manifests red and blue lightsabers and begins chopping at the heads, only to then find himself in a valley outside a temple.
Somehow, Ben has managed to travel through the Force to the afterlife where Force Ghosts congregate. These Force Ghosts are none too happy to be paid a visit by someone so infused with the Dark Side, but it's not long before Luke himself appears to intercede.
Ben knows that his uncle died shortly after their encounter on Crait, but not how he died. He demands to know who killed Luke, to which Luke replies, "No one killed me. I sacrificed my life for others, in service of something greater." He reminds Ben that this was the purpose of his life, before inquiring what Ben's purpose is.
Not in the mood for lessons and with his jealousy on full display, Ben then asks why Luke agreed to teach Rey. Luke's answer is simple - "She wanted to learn." Angrier than ever, Ben orders his uncle to stop watching him and threatens to find a way to destroy him, even in this place beyond death.
Unfazed, Luke reminds his nephew that he can't destroy him without destroying the Force itself. Luke also points out that Ben has achieved something special by travelling to this plane. His real concern should be figuring out how he managed it and what it means.
And thus ends the reunion between Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo. Ben promptly returns to the swamp, where he's attacked by a vengeful spirit who wishes to remind him of the pain and darkness that drives him. Soon after, Ben emerges from the meditation chamber covered in saber wounds. Vaneé helps his master by placing him inside the same Bacta tank where Vader spent so many of his pain-filled days and nights. Like grandfather, like grandson.
Thanks to this issue, we know that Ben and Luke had at least one encounter following their final duel, and there certainly seems to be room for more Luke appearances in the series down the road. We also see clearer signs that Ben isn't as consumed by the Dark Side as he'd like everyone to believe, paving the way for his return to the light in The Rise of Skywalker.
But perhaps most importantly, this issue teases the mystery of the secret vault in Fortress Vader. What dark power did Vader place there, and how will Kylo Ren access it? Is this the ultimate endgame of the series?

Compared to the previous generation GPUs, the RTX 5070 performs comparably with the RTX 4070 Super. We wish there was a bigger generation improvement in raw performance, but the RTX 4070 Super was already an excellent card for 1080p and 1440p gaming. The Meta Quest 3 is the best standalone consumer-oriented VR headset and is a significant upgrade compared to its less expensive Quest 3S sibling. The two share the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, Touch Plus controllers with inside-out tracking, and mixed reality passthrough. However, the Quest 3 has a higher resolution, higher FOV display with a much wider focused sweet spot thanks to its superior pancake lens design. The Quest 3 also has much more onboard storage. For VR veterans who are sure to benefit from a better display, I would highly recommend the Quest 3 over the 3S. I own it myself (and I reviewed it for IGN) and have logged over a thousand hours in Beat Saber alone.

Up until now, you couldn't download anything without the screen remaining on, but now Valve is enabling Steam Deck to "complete all active downloads in a new display-off low-power mode, before going to sleep." It will be enabled by default once you're plugged in, but can also be enabled if you go to Settings > Power when running on battery, too.
"Display-off downloads are accessible in two ways," Valve explained. "While Steam Deck is downloading content, pressing the power button now brings up a new dialog, asking whether you'd like to continue downloading with the screen off. Select Continue, and Steam Deck will go into the new low-power download mode. In addition, Steam Deck will automatically go into this mode after an idle timeout."
If you're in this mode and press a button or move the Deck, a new status screen will be displayed that shows you your download progress. From here, you can choose to fully wake the device or let it finish in low-power mode.
Right now only users in the Beta and Preview channels will have access to the feature, but it shouldn't be too long before it rolls out for all.

Specialty event cinema distributor Fathom Entertainment, along with Saga Arts and Warner Bros., today confirmed that the 2006 film V for Vendetta will be heading back to the big screen in 2026, just in time for its 20th anniversary. The film will hit theatres across the US on November 1 and 5, 2026.
“From its early days as a graphic novel and then a feature film, few properties have struck a chord with fans and been more thought-provoking societally than V for Vendetta,” said Fathom Entertainment vice president of studio relations, Tom Lucas, in a statement pubished alongside the announcement. “20 years later, the movie still resonates, and Fathom is so pleased to bring it back to theatres next November with our partners at Warner Bros. and Saga Arts.”
Based on the late ’80s graphic novel of the same name by writer Alan Moore and illustrators David Lloyd and Tony Weare, V for Vendetta is the story of a charismatic anarchist named V, who is seeking to trigger a revolution against the totalitarian government ruling a dystopian, near-future Great Britain. The film stars Hugo Weaving as V, as well as Natalie Portman as Evey – a young woman who becomes embroiled in his mission. Produced by Joel Silver and The Wachowskis, from a screenplay written by The Wachowskis, V for Vendetta was helmed by first-time director James McTeigue and was a box office success that received largely favourable reviews.

EA and Battlefield Studios have plans to tweak aim assist settings for Battlefield 6 controller users – but that hasn’t stopped PC players from digging into the files to turn off crossplay.
Senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson confirmed BF Studios would be “reverting back” to open beta controller aim assist settings in an X/Twitter post earlier this week. It’s a major change, especially for those on console, that fans have pleaded for since Battlefield 6 launched for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S October 10.
Far less stickiness so it does not create that rotational persistence that is currently live. Consistent slow down, no ramp. Recoil reduction is a separate system from AA but will be getting adjusted also once the new tech is online.
Nickerson says the change back to open beta settings will arrive “shortly,” adding that recoil reduction adjustments are also coming soon. Although PC and console players have disagreed on how aim assist has changed since the August open beta tests, many feel the settings have been tweaked for the worse.
“In the beta, aiming and shooting felt really satisfying, but now the aim feels completely different,” one popular comment posted shortly after launch says. “Making micro-adjustments is harder; I find myself fighting with the aim.”
“I’m not the greatest on controller but I’m pretty good and I can also say confidently that this problem did not exist in the beta,” another comment at the time said. “Aiming and aim assist felt perfectly fine on controller.”
BF Studios has made more than a few adjustments to Battlefield 6 that have had players up in arms, but the post-beta changes related to aim assist have been especially controversial. They’ve been so divisive, in fact, that some PC players recently started tearing through the game’s files just to avoid players using the controller assistance feature.
The workaround comes from content creator and X user @otterTweets, who revealed the method for those who are “tired of OP aim assist.” They say diving into the files at “documents/battlefield 6/settings/steam/PROFSAVE” and adding “GstGameplay.CrossPlayEnable 0” turns off crossplay completely.
There is, unsurprisingly, a catch for those who do this, though. Ottr says turning Battlefield 6 PC crossplay off drops affected players into lobbies populated with bots instead of real-world players. If enough PC users switch crossplay off, they could theoretically begin playing with more actual players, but it could take some time to really catch on.

It’s taken five years for Pablo Clark to design and refine and illustrate The Old King’s Crown, his very first board game. Over that time, whispers have been growing among playtesters and convention crowds that this title, where players take the role of asymmetric factions competing to win the rulership of a fantasy kingdom, was something special. Something, certainly, that was better than we had any right to expect of a first-time designer. Now after a self-publishing Kickstarter run, it’s finally here, and we can explore Clark’s kingdom in all its glory.
What’s in the Box
There’s no discussing The Old King’s Crown without first talking about the art. It’s right there on the box lid, after all, and it is stupendous. Rich with color and detail, stylized yet recognizable, bringing to life in glorious precision a world that has never existed. The fact that the designer is also the artist just makes you wonder how he got to the front of the queue when talent was given out.
Even when you slide off that sumptuous box lid, the art is everywhere within, almost every picture adding to the story and the setting. It’s on the board, which is a window from a high tower looking down on the provinces of a kingdom in civil war, as though players are plotting in their fastnesses while the people suffer. It’s on the deck of tarot-sized cards for each faction, filling in the wide narrative gaps in the brief rundown given to the setting in the rulebook. It’s on all the kingdom cards, faction-neutral buffs available for players to pick up. And it’s all astonishing: every time you play, you’ll notice something new.
All the graphic design and component quality here is sumptuous and spellbinding. The layout of the rulebook with its pictorial examples, the way the board carefully walks you through the stages of each turn, the pleasing color and layout of each faction's markers and central board, embossed with pockets to hold cards and chunky, printed wooden pieces of the matching color. The remaining few generic items: a turn marker, clash order markers and a few other bits and pieces are simple black-and-gold wood.
Assembled as a whole, it takes up a massive chunk of table space – but it looks incredible, a wood-and-cardboard invitation to stop and stare, a whole world laid out in squares and circles for those who take the time to look and appreciate.
Rules and How It Plays
This is quite a complex game, but the complexity is in the sheer information density available rather than the core flow of play, which is relatively straightforward. Games last a fixed number of turns, normally five, and each turn is broken down into four seasons. The meat of proceedings takes place in summer, where players will fight over three locations, each of which has two possible rewards, to be chosen by the victor. First, in turn order, players place their herald into one of the victory spots, which will bring them bonus points if they win there. They can then place some of their small pool of supporters in a location, which provide a small combat bonus. Then it’s time for the card play.
All players start with functionally identical card decks from which they draw a hand of six. Everyone places a card, face down, next to each location. Then they’re resolved one at a time, with everyone flipping over a card and adding the number on that card to the number of supporter pieces there. Highest total wins. Except, very often, it doesn’t.

The reason for this is that many cards have action icons which can be invoked to complicate matters. Ambush, for example, lets the owner play a second card into the melee. Flank lets that card slide out of the current combat and into a future one. There are others, but most terrifying of all is Deadly, which takes place after all other actions and kills enemy cards, putting them out of the game and into the dreadful “lost pile” for the remainder of play unless they have a helmet or shield icon, the latter of which also keeps them in the fray for that location.
It’s hard to overstate quite how taut this is. Someone flips the cards and all at once everyone’s craning over the massive board, desperate to decode the game’s intricate array of symbology to work out who’s in contention and what the next steps might be. Combats that are decided by ambush, or value ties which are resolved with additional card play, crank the excitement up even more, as do deadly attacks which can see critical cards assigned to the lost pile forever. And then when it comes to heralds, the stakes just go through the roof.
All the locations score you influence, the game’s name for victory points. But if you win in a space where you’ve placed your herald, you get an extra point. And if you win in a space where you and others have placed their heralds, you get to take a victory point off each of those poor unfortunates. This is a game where a winning tally can be 15-20 points, so actually taking points off other people to add to your own is huge. A well-calculated herald placement can swing you from last place to first in one fell swoop, ensuring that everyone is in contention, right up until the end.
Naturally, this invites all kinds of scheming. Discard piles are public information, so you can grub around in people’s trash, seeing if they’ve played that deadly card or whether it might be lurking in their hand, still, to screw you over. It’s also possible for players to buy additional cards to add to their deck, which not only come from asymmetric stacks tailored to your faction, but can add even more wrinkles to the formula, like making it lowest card wins instead. You’ll need to keep an incredibly sharp eye on what everyone else is doing if you want to minimize the chance of nasty surprises.
Buying new cards is only one way in which the game’s asymmetry shows. Each faction has a set of four special one-use powers, plus a fifth that you can invoke if you win a particular location. They’re all unique, and roughly aligned to that faction’s thematic play style. The Gathering, which represents the cult-like state religion, can swap the positions of two cards in combat, or sacrifice cards into the lost pile in order to gain resources to buy more cards. The uprising, by contrast, which is a revolution of the state’s common folk, can give cards the deadly effect, or the retreat effect.
As you begin to weave together the various unique card effects, asymmetry, special powers, and location victory effects you can begin to see all sorts of ways you can influence not only individual clashes but the game state as a whole. Your hand size will drop as the game progresses, except you can arrange things so it doesn’t. You’ll lose supporters, unless you find a way to gain them back. If you buy enough new cards you’ll get a point bonus, but you’ll have to make big sacrifices to do it. The number of ways you can approach The Old King’s Crown and still win is absolutely jaw-dropping, almost mind-crushing in its loops within loops within loops.

And still there’s more! We’ve only really covered the summer turn so far. In spring, players use cards to bid in a selection of kingdom cards, most of which are game-breaking in their own right. They can let you swap cards you’ve drawn for one in the lost pile, steal other player’s special powers, or give your cards extra effects. Each is easily enough to build a strategy around by itself, but you can hold up to two of them. Except that after the initial bid, you can steal kingdom cards off other players instead of taking a fresh one, forcing them, and you, to replan on the fly.
In the autumn you can send cards journeying, which gives you the chance to buy more cards, or you can send them to council, where they stay and give a long-term special ability. This can mean potentially more points if you win with your herald, the chance to grab supporters back, or other effects. Finally winter is just a bookkeeping phase and, frankly, a chance to catch your breath after the absolute strategic and social insanity of an entire round of The Old King’s Crown.
This is not an exaggeration. While there’s a staggering amount to enjoy here, the sheer quantity of detail you need to take into your stride to maximize your chances is almost overwhelming. You need to be on top of your own special powers and special cards, along with everyone else’s, what they’re buying, what they’re playing, what’s in their discard pile or the lost pile. You need to be cognizant of each player’s kingdom cards, what they do and what you need to bid to steal them, or protect your own. Initially this seems impossible. It gets easier with practice but you’ll need to play an incredible amount of this game if you want to properly internalize it.
You don’t, however, need to do all that in order to win. It’s perfectly fine to play from the hip more, although the reams of detail will nag at the edges of your thought processes as you do so. And you can get away with it because, fundamentally, you can check every discard pile in the game and still not be certain whether a player has just thrown down their deadly card into a herald location or whether it’s a tricky bluff. You can do very well just by reading faces, voices, and body language. And that creates a strange tension at the heart of The Old King’s Crown: it’s a game that gives you the most astonishing range and leverage to build strategies, and then lets other players pull the rug out from under you with a cunning bluff.
Marvel star Brie Larson cast her vote in yesterday's elections while covering her hair and telling fans they should absolutely, definitely "ignore the wig!!" she was wearing. Which, of course, has led the internet to do exactly the opposite.
The Captain Marvel actress posted an Instagram story last night letting her followers know she had voted — while dressed in a large hooded sweatshirt pulled up to hide her clothes and as much of her blonde wig as possible.
It is, frankly, a remarkably suspicious caption for an actress who regularly sports similar hair — and something that has only drawn attention to the fact Larson is clearly hiding whatever character she is currently playing.
Naturally, this has only fuelled the flames of fan speculation that Larson is indeed secretly filming scenes for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — which, it's important to remember, she was conspicuously left out of the main cast reveal for.
Fans certainly expect Larson's character to turn up within the movie at some point — not least because it would be weird to leave out such an important MCU figure. But there's a more important connective tissue here, too, as Avengers: Doomsday will feature many faces from Fox's X-Men cast, while Captain Marvel's best friend Monica Rambeau was last seen getting stuck in the X-Men universe.
While principal photography for Avengers: Doomsday has wrapped in the UK, fans expect additional scenes to continue to be filmed over the coming months in secret, as Marvel attempts to squeeze as many heroes into its next blockbuster as possible.
Alternatively, of course, Larson could simply be playing another character with hair that looks very, very similar to her Marvel character — but try telling the internet that.
"Ignore the wig is hilarious promo cause I don't think people would've noticed," wrote Marvel fan remerdy1 on reddit. "Yep, exactly, it's like she wanted us to notice," another fan, KostisPat257, agreed.
That said, not every Marvel actor seems likely to appear. Earlier this week, X-Men veteran Famke Janssen insisted that Marvel hadn't asked her to play the superhero again since the end of Fox’s X-Men movies. Other Fox X-Men veterans set for Doomsday include Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn. Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to arrive in theaters May 1, 2026.
