Graham Potter has revealed the investigation into whether Lucas Paquetá breached betting rules is taking its toll both mentally and physically on the West Ham player.

The Football Association’s inquiry into allegations Paquetá deliberately got himself booked in four matches, which he denies but which could leads to his being banned for life if found guilty, has lasted more than two years.

Paolini storms to victory over Gauff to win Italian Open and make history

  • Home favourite wins 6-4, 6-2 at Foro Italico
  • Paolini is first Italian to win women’s singles in 40 years

Jasmine Paolini became the first home winner of the Italian Open for 40 years with a dominant victory over Coco Gauff. The 29-year-old, who reached the final of the French Open and Wimbledon last year in a breakthrough season, delighted the fans at the Foro Italico with a 6-4, 6-2 success.

No Italian had won the singles titles in Rome since Raffaella Reggi in 1985, but Paolini thoroughly merited her triumph. Jannik Sinner could make it a home double when he faces Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday. “It doesn’t seem real to me,” Paolini said. “I came here as a kid to see this tournament, but winning it and holding up this trophy wasn’t even in my dreams.”

Three Iranians in UK charged after counter-terrorism investigation

Met police say the three charged under National Security Act for allegedly assisting Iranian foreign intelligence service

Three men have appeared in court charged under the National Security Act on suspicion of assisting the Iranian foreign intelligence service.

Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, of St John’s Wood, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, of Kensal Rise, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55, of Ealing, appeared before Westminster magistrates court on Saturday.

Primoz Roglic pulled on the pink jersey after stage seven of the Giro d’Italia but Juan Ayuso underlined his credentials as his main challenger by snatching victory in Tagliacozzo, in central Italy.

Ayuso (UAE-Team Emirates) had the power to break clear from a select group of favourites in the final few hundred metres of the 12km climb to the finish. His Mexican teammate Isaac Del Toro came second.

Aspinall wins night 15 while Littler secures top seeding for Premier League playoffs

  • Aspinall beats Dobey 6-1 in final to boost playoff chances
  • Littler’s win against Humphries enough for No 1 seeding

Nathan Aspinall beat Chris Dobey 6-1 to take victory on night 15 of the Premier League in Aberdeen and close in on the playoffs, while Gerwyn Price earlier hit a nine-dart finish and Luke Littler made sure of top spot at the O2.

Aspinall – who coasted past Stephen Bunting 6-1 in the semi-finals – built on a couple of early breaks over Dobey to establish a solid lead. After Dobey, who knocked Littler out to reach the final, lost his throw again in the sixth leg, he then missed two more darts at a double in the next as Aspinall came back to land double 10.

Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi placed in induced coma after surgery

  • Player’s condition is not thought to be life-threatening
  • Forward underwent abdominal surgery on Monday

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma to aid his recovery from urgent abdominal surgery. The Nigeria international underwent the procedure on Monday night, having suffered a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester.

There is no suggestion that the 27-year-old’s condition is life threatening and it is understood the coma will help restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate.

The 2012 Tour de France winner and five-time Olympic champion said his children wanted to put him in rehab amid fears the issue could prove fatal.

Taiwo Awoniyi undergoes urgent surgery on serious abdominal injury

Taiwo Awoniyi had urgent surgery on Monday night after the Nottingham Forest striker sustained a serious abdominal injury in the match against Leicester on Sunday.

The Nigeria international collided with the post late on in Forest’s 2-2 Premier League draw with their East Midlands rivals at the City Ground. The surgery was required swiftly to treat the nature of the injury, which is understood not to be life-threatening.
