A couple bought a 200-acre remote homestead in Alaska for $350k under the asking price - by writing a 900-word letter promising to carry on the owner's conservation legacy.

Elise Giordano, 34, and her husband Ben Hastie, 40, wanted to swap their two-bed cabin for their dream home but couldn't afford the asking price.

Desperate to move to the homestead in Palmer, Alaska, and Elise's father, Richard Giordano, 66, they put in an offer $350k under the asking with a "good letter" about why they should take the land.

To their surprise, it was accepted, and after three years, they are now working towards becoming self-reliant.

After living in their 1000-foot two-bedroom cabin on Vashon Island, Seattle, Washington, for one year, Elise and Ben wanted a change.

160 acres of the 200-acre plot of land are protected by a conservation agreement, but 40 acres of the land is available for Elise, Ben and Richard to do whatever they like on it.

"We still go to the shops, but our goal is by next summer, we can get our own salmon and moose - and slowly become self-sufficient.

Since living on the homestead, the couple have installed cabins which they rent out for between $85 to $95 a night and are working towards becoming self-reliant.

Researchers say her movements highlight how white sharks use the coast in late fall and winter, and her presence near beaches is normal and poses minimal risk.

Bella, a 700-pound shark, was tagged in Nova Scotia in July, and recently detected heading towards Virginia Beach for a holiday migration.

The scientist, who has also been tracking "Contender" notes this marks the first time scientists have documented Bella's annual southbound migration.

Fischer explains that approximately 88% of tagged sharks spend their summer and fall in Atlantic Canada, with only 12% using the Northeastern United States.

Over the past week, she traveled from Montauk all the way down to the Chesapeake Bay area, demonstrating the impressive speed of these apex predators during migration.

Bella pinged 20 miles west of Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge and 32 miles northeast of Virginia Beach.
